It's also worth thinking about the enormous logistics trains behind the Normandy invasion. Without the Mulberry harbors, Liberty and Victory ships, and the Merchant Marine, Private Ryan would have no food, fuel, or ammunition to fight with.
The record for building a Liberty ship was held by the SS Robert E Peary, launched 4 days and 15.5 hours after the keel was laid. At the time, 250-ton modules were shipped to the shipyards by railcar and then assembled. She sailed for the Pacific Theater 14 days after keel laying. Later in the war, the Peary landed troops at Omaha Beach on June 7 and 13, 1944.
The economics of the Liberty ships were such that if they made it across the Atlantic once, they paid for themselves. A second trip was gravy. Casualty rates for the Merchant Marines were higher than any other branch of service, with just shy of 4% killed in action. The Marines were next at just shy of 3%.
