WP #5. How Many Countries Have You Been To?

All you Rich People... I've been to:
Canada, Ireland, Mexico, UK (England, Wales only).

US ( more than half of states )

And I've been to a number of "colony"-type places such as Pitcairn and South Georgia islands, and "sailed by very close" to Galapagos and Easter Island.

Oh, and I've spent a good deal of time in Antarctica, which is technically not any country.

And for those of you who are exclaiming "rich tourists!".....most of my travels have either been work based (where I made next to nothing), and/or dirtbag-hitchhiking travel (where I was typically spending about $6/day). I travel very cheap.

wow, some impressive lists..

US & Canada. (I could say Quebec & Canada, but that would be political! )
England, Costa Rica, Netherlands..

And Cuba..

But, if we look closer at the US & Canada:
I've driven Montreal QC to Vancouver BC 6 times (One time Vancouver to Montreal) I am only missing Newfoundland & the two territories to make up the 'all of Canada' claim
One drive to BC was thru the US (Montreal to Chicago in one day!), so I've seem the northern states. Love Montana & Wyoming!! I've done Florida to Montreal a bunch of times too.. Each time coming back was a little further west. Last trip was up the west coat of FL and up thru AL, KY, TN (KY & TN are my two favorites states to drive thru! pretty!)

+1, Canada and Mexico were the ones we saved a couple years for, everything else has been work.

Yeah, my most expensive "vacation" type trip was about three months long in New Zealand. The airfare was more than half the cost of the whole thing (at around $1150). All in all I spent about $800-$900 total beyond that airfare....not bad for three months of travel (covering everything else). And yes, I also saved for 2-3 years to be able to do the trip.

Hmm, kind of fun to assemble this list. All were seen in at least some capacity outside the airport:

US, Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, England, Italy, Greece, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Israel, Jordan, Kenya, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong (still under British control at the time, count that one as you will). I think that's it, adds up to 18. A good total but still soooo much more of the world to see.

[edit] Peartree's posting reminds me that I've got Antigua and Curacao on the list as well. So, we'll call it 19 1/2.

My father used to tell people that all three of his children lived in foreign countries. I was in Australia, one sister was living in Ponape and my other sister was living in Southern Idaho.

When I told a friend I was marrying a woman from Idaho, he said, "All they have in Idaho is potatoes and neo-Nazis!" She replied, "I'm from north Idaho. We don't have potatoes."

My parents' rule was that you were a world traveler if you had visited more countries than you are years old. I've lost that status for a while, since Turkey is the only one I've added in the last 20 years.

One of these things does not belong...

Four: US, Canada (on separate occasions for both business and tourism), Isreal (as a ten year old, 45 years ago; I don't remember much), and France (on business). I lived in southern California for a year and a half, spent a day in San Diego, and never got to Mexico; my wife did 't have a passport.

Does Canada count? Then a grand total of 2. I never go anywhere. What surprises me is my kids. One or another and their families seem to be in Europe or Asia several times a year. My Grandaughter is going to school in Dublin, and she hit four countries just getting home for the summer, not counting Ireland/US.

Her trip home was a heck of a story. From Dublin, she went to Spain for a week with a friend, then back to Dublin ('cause she already had a ticket home that started in Dublin). Then to Germany, where her flight was diverted to a different German airport, then sent to Amsterdam. There she had a connection to Portland, but had a 'special security check' which made her miss that flight. With ten different ticket agents, speaking three different languages working on her travel, she got a flight to Vancouver, Canada, where, (at 11 PM and the Lufthansa desk closed) the airlines had no records of her tickets at all. After that was straightened out, she went to Chicago, and finally a flight home to Boise. 50 hours of travel, not counting the trip to Spain. And all of that was with no weather delays - the original diversion in Germany was due to a drone over the airport. [But, she said that everyone was always very friendly and helpful, and she was under no time constraint, so the trip was just challenging and tiring.]

It probably would have gone faster if she hadn't had two positive swab tests for explosives during her security check in Amsterdam. Makes me wonder what she was doing during that week in Spain.

When I was her age, my big adventure was driving from Idaho to Oklahoma.
