About 2 months ago I got another sneek peak at giant leap rocketrys newest kit and addition to the almost ready to fly line of kits, I called Kent one Saturday afternoon asking if he could modify an escape velocity kit to a 54mm fincan and motor mount. Well a long story short I was told to wait and he had just the thing in mind for me that would be all I wanted and more. The Doppler shift was exactly what he promised yea I made a few modifications to suit my needs but this kit is gonna scream when I load it up with my pro54-6gxl L640 dual thrust.
When I called kent the main thing I wanted was the longest 54mm motor mount I could get hoping to eventually fly on a Loki L1400. The Doppler shift is built around a 2.5” airframe and is 64.5” long with an altimeter bay that is removable from the upper airframe. The booster airframe is 36” long with a 24” long 54mm motor mount and a hardpoint adapter although I chose not to use it in mine because of the longer motors I plan to use. I split my upper centering ring and epoxied the Kevlar shockcord to the side of the motor mount tube instead so that I can fly a pro54-6gxl or a 54/2800. The fincan is great to work with its an acme fincan that’s been but down and drilled to lighten it by 15% then on top of that the astethics are great the new strakes or “fin”ders are a great addition to the kit they give this kit great lines and a look that’s beyond three fins and a nosecone, plus the greatest part of all, they make finishing around the fins a breeze! That’s the one hang upthat ive had on putting an acme fincan inside of an airframe is the amount of time it takes to fill the wide slots that you have to make to insert the fincan. One other note that caught me off guard is that the acme fincan also doubles as the rear centering ring, just be sure to file down the middle of the fins so that you can completely close the airframe around it. The altimeter bay is also removable with a 1” switchband around it, the one modification that I made here was to trade out the removable rivets for 3 6-32 machine screws and t-nuts simply to make me feel better as I tend to get alittle excited with my ejection charges and tend to be closer to blowing it up than just blowing it apart.
A great addition to the way this kit is built is that the slimline retainer is included with it, I almost wish that I had swapped mine out with a kwik-loc just because the snaprings can be a pain at times. I also chose to swap the acme railguides that came with it out with standard rail buttons simply out of personal preferance . over all I love the kit and I definitely cant wait to fly my doppler shift my first flight will be on a k550 and my second flight will be on an L640 dual thrust, I bought a Doppler shift for two reasons I wanted a kit that I could abuse heavily over mach on 54mm motors or throw in a slimline adapter and fly on I211s all day long instead. Overall I love the Doppler shift and look forward to kloudburst when I can finally fly my first L motor

What is there to reply to? No pictures. No build steps. No detailed descriptions. Hasn't flown it yet.

Personally, I would love to see a detailed build thread and flight video. That would be useful in evaluating the kit design and an aid in making a purchase decision. Whereas the post in question seems a bit like an advertising endorsement.

I'm with you on this one. I hate to say it and I am not meaning to be rude, but I saw the title and went "COOL, I wanna hear about this new rocket.
Giant leap makes some AWESOME kits" then I opened it. No pics no build one LONG run on sentence. sorry I got about 2 lines into reading it and Quit.
My English and typing skills aren't the best, but I try to make things readable.

Please give us some GOOD details, Some pictures, and make it a little more readable I look FORWARD to it!

and make it a little more readable

I always tell these "legal" person(s) i know, when your to buisy proof reading something meant to be discussive and in an informal presentation. Your brain is unable to see the forest for the trees. At the end you probably know more about what isn't in the grammar than what is or "isn't" being said.

I understand the cant get past two sentences.. there are magical writers, people good at expressing thought, and then the rest of us. Personally, I realize i am able to overlook my own insecurities to see what it is someone else is thinking.

As for the Doppler shift! It is = a shift from the normal rocket.
I will bring the sony handycam with a 2x lens if Chris shoots this thing up with an L640 and post to yutub... (i think a duct-taped keychain cam is in order) that would be a neat view - too bad i haven't ordered mine yet)
I am looking forward to my wichita staycation this weekend...

Sorry Clay D,but as usual, your post makes little sense. Gramatical errors, spelling errors and punctuation errors abound. It makes it very difficult for anyone with a command of the English language to understand the point you are trying to make. If the purpose of language is to communicate ideas, proper spelling and puntuation are key to achieving that understanding.

I am always a little disturbed by those who understand and express that they are lacking in a certain skill, make no effort to affect change and criticize those who show proficiency in that same skill. It shows a lack of maturity and self awareness. I understand that often, on this and other forums, people can put a great deal of effort into parsing out the minutia to aggrandize their own image. This was clearly not the case.

id love to post a build thread with pictures but id like to know whos gonna fork over the money to buy me a new camera? the exwife took mine in the divorce along with several other things i need im sorry its a runon but try writting something when you have been running on 1-2 hours of sleep for 8 months and stressed to the point your almost out of control it wears on ya trust me it was all i could do to get that far and does the title say anywhere in it that its a build thread?

I don't think anybody said it was a build thread, the point was that the person requested a response to your posting and I opined that you would likely receive more of a response if it was a detailed build thread.

BTW, I appreciate your effort to post when undergoing personal difficulties, but believe me you are not the only one experiencing significant personal/family stress in their life--many are in this "boat" in one way or another.

The purpose of language is not to communicate. Its a tool of communication. Try being in a foregn country with a machine gun to your head, and speaking a language you don't know. (personal experience for me in the baja penensula)

Proper Language is absolutely not necessary for EFECTIVE communicaiton.
I and my family arent dead in a ditch...

A command of the English laguage, is nearly empossible, since there are may different dailects of english over the world. (even in countries english is the first language) all with different standards and grammar rules.
I am always a little disturbed by those who understand and express that they are lacking in a certain skill, make no effort to affect change and criticize those who show proficiency in that same skill.

How is that disturbing at all, those with the skill that admonish the lack of skill irregardless of why it is lacking, are doing the same exact thing. Written language is an extremely difficult thing for a lot of people.

Would you have told edison he was an idiot, if you couldnt read his grammar correctly... I challenge you to look up actual writings from some very self aware, very talented indeviduals.

My simple point is, we dont post for proof reading, we post to discuss. If you seriously cant look past your senior year in highschool and cant bring yourself to read something, move on.. dont post "dont post something unreadable"...

If i post something you dont think makes sense, perhaps it's an iq issue. Some people's logic is on a different level than others.

Hey I was not meaning to talk down to the OP. He's A NEWBIE (or at least close to it) I thought I'd give him my thoughts, and what might help make his posts better and more informative!

I really do look forward to this thread. I was looking at that kit myself. I am interested in the "recovery system"

Well, i dont mean to talk down, but instead of jumping on Tim's band wagon, let's be freinds, and like i see guys on the range talk. i know your capable of being a quite nice guy, and not a negative nancy...
if your goint to be negative, do like I see others do in the hobby and do it behind thier back...

there are productive discussions, and there is the first half of this thread....second half mostly too.

your first post would have been perfect if everthing else wasnt in it but the last sentance....

TRF has become a "spider domain" people with nothing better to do, than make comments about other people's lack of ability. Or, be insulted the ambitions of some one else. It's either insecurity, ego or both.
mabye, i am guilty, maybe I am just to sensitive that I force them into the negativity for fun.

You and Tim are both quite capable of productive commenting. Your both amazingly competant at rocketry.

I know Kent, Ed, Steve, and Chris.. (i dont usually name those i do know on here.. -i find that kind of thing a character flaw) Chris, is a very active flyer, and has a superior craftsman quality to his builds...I would love pictures of the build as well.

If 1 posts it- its a suggestion, if its a gang, it's a freight train....

Wow!! Not to hijack a thread but maybe you could tell us more in the "Watering Hole" Was it the police? The drug lords? How could it have been avoided? I travel/sail in Baja quite a bit so this intrests me. My avitar is of a little house in a remote fishing village in Bahia Santa Maria a little over 600 miles south of the border. We anchored there for a few days last time I sailed to Cabo

It's very simple... I was a kid, my dad made a wrong turn,(couldnt read the sign) and we ended up in a military training area.......none of us spoke spanish, none of them spoke english, after the adreanaline started to wear off one of the soldiers was able to determine that we were on vacation and apparantly - lost... it is a perfect example where both sides have to give a great effort to understand the other. as i am sure you could forsee what would happen if you didnt.(or they could have gone back had some tequila and a good laugh...)

I never said I wasn't friends with anyone. I just thought the OP was hard to read, and I gave him a little suggestion to make it easier.

I don;t talk behind peoples backs. If I have something to say I'll say it to your face. Like my first post in this thread.

I just thought a little helpful critique might help out. Shread Vector used to give me a hard time about my "english" it makes me think about what I am typing. and has made me better. I thought maybe my comment would do the same.

anyways back to the doppler.

HELLO! Rocketry thread here. If you want to discuss personal issues that's what PM's are for. (Personal Messages)
Could we get back to the Doppler shift? I'm interested...

the doppler shift comes with an 18" drogue and a 48" main i havent yet but im tempter to switch min out with a tac-1 just because of the way a rocket looks under chute

I will post a build thread. I planned to do it tonight, but I am going to rocket launch since my work related conference was cancelled.

I promise photos no later than Tuesday evening.

Problem solved.

thanks cwbullet thatd be great! i wish i had a camera so that i could post pictures of mine1 did you put the hardpoint in or did you forgo this step to allow for the longest motors? i split the upper cr and epoxied the shockcord to the motor tube and my friend steve made a longer mmt to allow for his kosdon case and a forward thrust ring since his kosdon case has never been modified

I wanted to see a picture.

i flew my doppler shift today at kloudburst in argonia. wow! i flew on a cti L640 dual thrust and leaped off of the pad and was followed by a really nice crack when it went supersonic. i wish somebody would have gotten a picture of more than the smoketrail when it left the pad. I hit 12812' on the flight and i bet i can get even more when i finish sanding down the primer and get it painted. has anybody else flown theirs yet?

LAUNCH!!

WOW!!

A CTI L640 Dual Thrust, Kicked Chris Cain's Doppler Shift in the A$$!

Straight as an arrow flight, His personal best altitude of 12,812'! :point:
Perfect deployment & recovery.

Radio Tracked Aprox 3.5-4 miles to the ESE from the flight line.

Kent Burnett of Giant Leap, Was on site to witness Chris' flight of their new kit!

I think he was more anxious than we were!
Did he ever have such a big grin on his face! :D

I have pictures & will post them later on in the week.
The pics will be of the rocket, Not of Kent! :y:

Chris Cain Prep of his Doppler Shift & Lift off on it's way to 12,812' (CTI L640 Dual Thrust)!
Anyone else fly theirs yet?

its truely amazing that you got that picture, i know kent tried and all he got was smoke! the best part of all was the crack when it broke mach and watching the 3 seconds between the end of the tracking smoke and the apogee event. i do like that adept22 its a nice altimeter for only 39 bucks i shoulda bought more than 3!

I'm sorry, but the crack you heard was not the rocket breaking mach. It was more likely a casting tube being spit during the burn.

Nice flight though, and congrats on the personal altitude record. You've got me beat, and I used an N!

thats why i wish i had used a different altimeter on my flight! hopefully ill have a raven by ldrs and another motor so i can find out after i get a good finish on it it was pretty rough just cleaned up enough to primer and fly. i was the highest flight of the day and it was pretty much because the majority of the weight was the motor, i cant wait for the k270 and the mariah 54 to come out! thank you it was an awesome flight i had only been 6848' before that flight

Most likely the crack we heard was the liner being spit out.

I don't think we were quite far enough away to be outside the shock cone by the time it transitioned.

It did exceed mach 1 though! :point:

That was a very lucky snap of the shutter! :jaw:

It was a cool flight! Thanks for the entertainment Chris. You guys are much better at RDFing than I am.

What happened to the black rocket? I forgot to ask when I saw it.

rolling thunder hung the main and bounced off of the hard kansas dirt it shattered the phenolic but thats what i get for being lazy and not glassing it plus too big an apogee charge zippered the booster im going to rebuild it with magnaframe hopefully for 3 i200s at sb3
