...thanks to everyone here who has helped me with all my endless Newbie questions, and to everyone else for making this such a great forum.

I have been on a LOT of forums ever since the days of dial-up modem bulletin boards - R/C planes and helicopters, photography, woodworking, boat-building and Goldfish care, and many of them I no longer have anything to do with because of bullying, contentious or belligerent behavior. I saw one very popular R/C helicopter forum literally destroyed by two or three individuals who trolled every post outside of their little cliche and made it their own little, private club after driving everyone else away. In fact, I have learned to typically avoid clubs & forums for those very reasons; I'll drop in, get a few crucial questions answered and then leave.

I am constantly pleasantly amazed at the quality and quantity of responses and the decorum & civility of the folks here. It says a lot about the quality of the members as well as the efforts of the moderators.

Thanks :)

Don't worry, some clown will be along to ruin it any time now.... :-D

But seriously, welcome!sucks-to-your-assmar.jpeg

Thanks for saying so, and your welcome. And let me just add, since you mentioned avoiding "clubs & forums", that all of the only-a-few rocketry clubs I've been involved with have been similarly different from what you've come to expect.

Funny, I got out of RC years ago mostly due to the bad attitudes online and at the fields. I guess there is something about the need to control objects that messes with one's head?? Rocketry is way more laid back and much more enjoyable.

It's the Internet; the semi-anonymity brings out the best and the worst in people. With regards to character, the saying is true: Cream rises to the top. With regards to the other stuff the only analogy I can come up with is a sewage treatment pond and what rises to the top there.

It is a pretty good crowd here... despite what other forums might say. The riffraff has mostly got themselves banned, or left voluntarily, what remains is a pretty solid crowd.

Concur. The mods and admins are pretty patient, but they do pull out the skillet every once and a while.

I feel the same way. I have learned a lot from these folks.

Hence the reason I use my name instead of an online alias, people generally will find the same person in real life they find online.

One of the best decisions I made as a commenter on one of the local school district blogs was using my own name. If I didn't want to put my own name next to it, I shouldn't be posting it. It's not hard to get from Boatgeek to my actual name, so I try to keep the same attitude even though this one is under a pseudonym.

I appreciate the mods for both using the #2 loon mallet when needed but also for their restraint. I've benefited from the latter quite a bit. I am continually amazed at how much people are willing to share in their builds, designs, and ideas. It really makes the community a great place even before you get to a launch.

If you really want to showcase what the model rocketry community is like, look at the support everyone showed Mark and Marion Hayes. It doesn't get any better then that IMHO.

That's really wonderful.

A dear friend of mine is a preeminent amateur astronomer in SoCal. He just had four small strokes and will need a lot of assistance. I hope the community there comes to his aid as much as the rocketry community came to theirs.

Couldn't agree more.

A nice bonus is that it creates a virtuous cycle: getting all that help when you're new makes you more inlined to help others once you're able.
