Wow we have a lot in common!! Those are the exact 3 I want to produce, and maybe the Miss Riley Kit also if I can get a deal worked out on the nozzles. I’d like to made 3 sizes of every kit, so a 65mm, 75mm and 98mm. I’ll be starting off with the Mach Fever and than next off will be the Praying Mantis. I want to keep the options for kits simple but have the kits be very advanced. Great minds think alike :)

Yeah! So I get a discount?! Lol.
There are several machinists hang out on the forum. I've been in contact with some of em off and on. They may be willing to take on the job. Should be win-win for everyone. I'll scratch around for the contact info if your interested.

That’d be aweosme!! Anything would be greatly appreciated. I have the original mold for the 4” version, they were spun on a lathe. It’d be so cool if we could reintroduce these kits again, as we have the original plans from the movie. My personal number is 612-599-2292. Thanks so much!

Just make sure the fins aren't too thin.... 0.063" is not thick enough!
If you do intend to push them, they will flutter and come apart.

The only problem is that the nozzle restricts you to a 38mm MMT in a 98mm BT. I’m really trying to look around to see if any one could spin me a nozzle with a 54mm MMT at minimum.

The guys at Giant Leap have a conical motor retainer in 54mm, not really the right profile, but you might talk to them and see where the get them made.

Buddy,

How close in size was the Rocket Boy kit to the Miss Riley Ky built for the movie?

I'd be interested in a Rocket Boys/Miss Riley kit. 38mm with ability to adapt down to 24/29. And PM sent.

That would be nice too. 54mm kits with 38mm mounts and the ability to fly on a 29 are becoming my favorite size.

I too have a no vote on fiberglass--costly, heavy. The original Rocketman kits were of course PML phenolic and although a historic throw back, I wouldn't make that choice either as prone to cracking even when laminated. That leaves cardboard as most affordable for buyers and probably least startup inventory cost for Rocketman, but I would explore another option first. Buddy, call Mike at MAC Performance and see if canvas phenolic could be an option. Superior material and great cost/performance profile. It may be a win-win partnership as Mike increases his volumes and the initial inventory outlay by Rocketman should be reduced considerably.

I need another kit like i need a hole in the head......but i could not resist buying the Rocket boy. Sweet with that nozzle !!

Frankly, I like what Madcow does. Offers some great kits in a variety of materials. The Fenzy for example can be bought in traditional LOC tubing or fiberglass. Maybe limit the number of kits in order to offer in several different materials?

When first proposed Buddy, I offered that 4" x 54mm in all fiberglass would be my preference and ... it still is. Although a MAC Performance canvas phenolic airframe would be a great second choice. My thoughts are more of a lasting and rugged rocket which qualifies as a collectors rocket rather than a cardboard phenolic/blue tube construct. Nothing against these materials for many rockets and rocketeers as I've used them many times over the years ... just stating my parameters and preferences for which I would spend $225. plus on.

I would consider a Praying Mantis - only in phenolic or paper. There is a glut of glass rockets out there and I like the lightweight aspects of non fiberglass rockets.

We are excited to announce the release of our Miss Riley Fiberglass Rocket Kits now for purchase on our website! The kits are 55” tall, 2.64” Diameter with a 38mm MMT and have a Aluminum Billet Machined Nozzle, just like the original ones. Our kits are a 2/3rd Scale version of the original ones featured in the movie October Sky, exactly 20 years ago! Each kit is signed by Homer Hickam and Ky Michaelson on a Certificate of Authenticity and is limited to 100 kits only that will ever be made. There is also a recovery package available for these kits that include everything you’d need to safely recover the rocket as well as a Altimeter Bay Package that is 3D printed. On our website we have detailed instructions on how to build this kit along with a downloadable Open Rocket Sim file.

Check them out here before they sell out: https://the-rocketman.com/miss-riley/

Hello All, I’m thinking about reproducing the old Rocketman Rocket Kits that we used to make nearly 20 years ago. Although they’d totally be upgraded, all fiberglass with dual deploy. My thinking is to introduce one of the kits, but in 3 MMT diameters, 38mm, 54mm and 75mm. This would be perfect as a L1, L2, L3 kit that would be fully equipped with Rocketman Recovery gear, stickers and detailed instructions.

Now my question is for the old timers, what kit would you like to see? I’m personally thinking of our old Mach Fever or Rocketboy Kit. The Rocketboy kit would need an aluminum nozzle, but is that allowed?

Please let me know of your thoughts as I’m working on expanding Rocketman Parachutes as it’s now a father and son company.

Btw the picture is me (years ago) holding the Mach Fever kit. I also need to think of a very cool paint job.

Thanks to all!
Still have my Mantis!
