So maybe I'm a little eager but who's planning on going to the Rock Lake launch this year? I've already convinced the wife, told the kids, and booked a camper trailer to bring. Going for my level 1 as well.

Good for you Maniak! Look forward to seeing you out there. Did Tim get you hooked up with Allen?

Not that is far for us but the Kronos E team will be there, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Well we will be closer to the launch date anniversary than the landing, but celebration it will be.

Sounds like a lot of fun! I've talked to Tim and he sent me the study guide and practice exams. Once I've read over everything and feel I'm ready for the exam I'll contact him again. He did say there are people in my area that could help with testing.

Awesome, I'm getting excited already. Bring some more of the BC people with you!

My flight plans aren't really solid yet. I'm having trouble saving hobby money these days, but would really like to fly my L4 rocket on a M sparky. I also recently finished a minimum diameter 54mm that can hold longburn Ks or an L.

Some contests will be held this year to mark the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. Stay tuned for the announcement!

My wife and I are planing to attend. Since both Fall Fire and just recently our Fire & Ice high power launches were canceled due to weather conditions I'm very excited about Rock Lake. Rockets I plan to fly are my Darkstar Jr., 3" Punisher and 4" Skunk Ace. Looking forward to meeting you all in person.

This looks like a lot of fun, and I'd love the chance to not only get into high power but also to connect with other rocketeers.

I wonder if a scale version of SpaceX's "Starhopper" prototype would count as a lander with its integrated fin legs?

You betcha!

I’m planning on making an appearance this year. I’m really looking forward to seeing Kronos Pente’s 1/20th scale Apollo Saturn V take flight. I will be bringing a Madcow Level-2 (renaming it “Higher Calling”) rocket which will be my first fiberglass rocket, plus it will be my first venture into K and L motors on this beauty. In addition, I look forward to participating in the contests set up for Rock Lake. I’m so pumped about this summer; it’s been too long! [emoji573]

Woah! I've seen that project but had no idea it was going to be launching in Canada. What motor(s) is that thing flying on (I found the FB page but no info on that).

Also anything a guy should know to get L1/L2 certified at this event? Other than getting well versed in all the CAR document/requirements.

I'll be attempting my L1 there. From what I understand there's 2 exams, a Transport Canada and a CAR/ACF safety exam. You'll also need to build, fly, and recover your rocket in one piece. The rocket needs to pass an inspection before and after the flight. Obviously need your CAR/ACF membership to be all up to date as well.

I was checking out the web site for this launch. It sounds like I can not launch a rocket unless I belong to CAR, is that correct?

GWH The Kronos E project is going up on an CTI N3301 with four outboard CTI K635Rs. (O range) A bit of red and white flame and smoke.... Oh there is a G80 in there somewhere too for the LES.

Do I need to fill out and send an Authorization to Launch form to launch my L1 attempt or is there a "blanket" authorization that covers all high power launches that weekend?

Maniak, the launch organizer does this for the entire launch so you do not need to worry about that. It is not usual for an individual flyer to submit a launch authorization. I am happy to see you have looked into that and even know about it, Kudos!

TC Launch authorizations require several things, Landowner permission(s) (location needs to be vetted by Transport Canada), recognized Range Safety Officer and insurance. Individuals generally don't have this hence why the larger, sometimes national organizations facilitate all three requirements. Of note UAV authorizations require the same thing but there is no national organization that helps this along and individuals fill out a 20+ page authorization form/conditions (last I checked it was this large) as opposed to the 1 pager for rockets.

Doug, while the Rock Lake Launch is not TRA, Calgary Rocketry has dual CAR/ACF and TRA launches a couple times a year. The unfortunate part we don't operate the same as NAR/TRA launches we have to do a time separation for the insurance and rule thing but we do submit dual authorizations for the launches. New Mexico seems to be a long way away for you though to wander up to Canada.

BTW your video and photography look awesome!

Thanks. It is doubtful I could make it and I was specifically wanting to film the Kronos E project if allowed. But I would also like to fly a rocket or two while I was there.

Awesome. Thank you for taking the time to answer these question in such detail. One other question I have is are vendors there? If I have a successful L1 launch, I will probably want to launch it a second time.

There may one maybe two vendors there but I don't think any will be offering anything in the HP arena. We had a few in the past but as all the retailers are now out east none seem to find their way to Alberta unfortunately. If you are looking to launch again at the launch maybe put a call out as there will be rocketeers that may have some motors that could be available. Put a call out here and on the Canadianrocketry forum (yahoogroups), if you have never been there you will have to sign up and get added. The crowd at RL is pretty accommodating and I am sure there will be a few H's available, how about an I for your L2??

I didn't know I could do that. Can I attempt my L2 if all goes well with my L1, or would I have to wait for paperwork to get done?

Yes you can do that. if you cert L1 you are good to go with doing L2 so you will need an I and assuming your rocket will take the I. You will need to pass the written test if not already done.

Thanks for all the info. I'm planning on using an LOC Goblin for the L1 attempt. If it goes good, I think I'll attempt the L2 as well.

Maniak, unfortunately you need to see this message. Crossposting from the official Rock Lake thread...

Hi everyone, I need to put out this update for Rock Lake this year. While we have all approvals for launch in place, we do not have approval from the local fire marshal. At this point, he will not issue a permit, which means we will not be allowed to host Rock Lake this year either!

He will give us a couple more days to see if any rain falls at the site before he decides for sure, but from my conversation today we'd need a monsoon to change his mind.

I know there are a number of people with long distance travel plans so I wanted to give you a heads up early enough. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

I will let everyone know early next week if there is any change.
