any way to describe how loud it was? I know it's not easy but videos never do the sound justice. The first time i saw an HPR launch i was amazed how loud it was (and these were the very min. motors that qualify as high power). I can't imagine what this thing sounded like when it ignited. I grew up in Daytona Beach and so saw a lot of shuttle launches as a kid, including the challenger disaster, but from very very far away.

Pressure fed from a gas cylinder is good for a static firing, but it should be obvious that one cannot fly a motor with any kind of performance without pumps.

You can actually get pretty far with pressure fed engines. On the hobbyist side, Robert Watzlavick (https://www.watzlavick.com/robert/rocket/) is going to fly a rocket with (nearly) off-the-shelf oxygen cylinders (I think he is turning to OD down slightly to reduce weight). On the professional side, EXOS Aerospace is flying a fully reusable sounding rocket that is pressure fed (LOX/alcohol). Pumps will certainly give you more performance, but you could get to orbit with pressure fed.

One of the largest rockets ever proposed, the Sea Dragon, was to be pressure fed.
The Apollo lunar descent and ascent engines were both pressure fed engines, as is SpaceX's Dragon and really the list could go on and on throughout a long history of successful and relatively high performing pressure fed engines.

do you know when/where Robert is planning to fly? I've been checking in on his website every so often, his work is pretty freaking amazing.

I don't know when he is planning to fly. He posts on arocket occasionally, so keep an eye out there.
