Is Shooting a Viking Rocket legal?

Another tip - bend small piano wire into a flat bottomed U and bury the wire in the fin root fillets so the bottom of the U catches the motor. Described elsewhere on the forum recently.

And I have to admit, every time I see the title of this thread, I think someone is asking about rocket skeet.

Sorry, don't have time to read the whole thread ....

I would say shooting a Viking rocket is legal if you own the rocket and the gun laws in your state permit the discharge of firearms. Make sure no one is holding it at the time, because shooting a person is definitely a no-no in all fifty states.

:D

Makes you wonder why he doesn't want to shoot the other rockets in the Estes line. He could be a Packers fan.

Lol you guys are totally extending this thread... but i have built the rocket today and tried a friction fit and it did well ... only problem was that the engine sorta expanded the bottom half guess that's not my fault putting the next engine was a bugger

The "hook" goes on the outside of the rocket -in between the fins. Use glue and wrap a strip of index card around the rocket and over the hook - on the top half- away from the motor.

Nice use of my image... But a better one might have been seen in my OpenRocket Files thread.

The grey band at the back end of the rocket is the Mylar Engine Hook Retaining Ring (30168).

Well, the best time to shoot & hit your rocket is at apogee ... and if there is someone holding onto it at that point, you've got one hack of a hot motor + someone competing for a Darvin award !

...and, you broke the NAR safety code about launching vertabrea animals, so boooo on you for that!

the retaining band does what for the motor? i was drinking n cold one and i wasnt to sure if that was actually useful to the motor bay since its housed outside of the rocket
plus how can i use those pics to demonstrate my ideas....i would love to know and show

It keeps the engine hook attached to the motor tube. In a minimum diameter rocket the motor tube is the same as the main body tube.

Using the image? I'd recommend that you download OpenRocket, then download some of my files. From there, you can open them up in 3D view, and manipulate the rendering of the rocket to get the views you need. A screen grab (print screen) of the desired angle, and some work with image software, and Bob's your uncle.

thanks for the info i guess i can use that application to help me better understand build without building them

The "friction fit" thing is in the Viking instructions... it's in there, yeah... but... I can't say I'm super thrilled about those Estes instructions. Sorry - that's my honest opinion. Here's the thing - You can get the Viking instructions by searching the Estes Rockets website and see for yourself. Now compare the modern Estes instructions with older instructions from the JimZ website. Pick a friction fit model on the JimZ site - maybe the Wizard for example. Compare and come to your own conclusion. -My opinion - There is a tremendous opportunity for improvement with the modern Estes instructions... I'm not volunteering... I'm just saying... -not sure anyone (Ellis) is listening.

If Ellis Langford isn't listening, remember than John Boren is a forum member.

got a this message from downloading it .. uncaught problem where the thingy say bug report what do i do to open it ?

Nice use of my image...

I shoulda figured... I didn't have an image of my own ( you know I like pictures, right?) :D:D:D

... and I just did a google image search on "Estes motor hook" - your image - best of the bunch!!!

- just like all of your posts here on the forum - totally da bomb :cool::cool:

well w/o a more precise bug/error message it is hard to say but lets see if we can narrow things down a bit. you got this message when you tried to open the open rocket jar file? are you running Windows? with the current java installed? or did you try to open an open rocket design (ork) file w/o open rocket up and running?

it was a bug report and let me read it and send the issue to the company, but nothing has opened in 1 week.. sooo

Actually, Rocket Trap Shooting would be much easier. Skeet is complicated, and probably better left to those certified for high power rocketry.

I am briefly going to bring up the topic for another questioner.
I have been toying with some new viking models I made a few months back, shot like 6 of them , using different motors ; A8-33, B6-4 and C6-7. Of the six shots i lost 2 rockets due to to tight of tape wrap, and to loose tape wrap, how can I use these rockets if I dont know the complete and utter safety of the friction wrap? I feel like friction fitting a engine in a rocket is quite primitive, i just built swift, and it is also a friction wrap rocket, but the only issue, is it has a tumble recovery system, but the engine is ejected from the rocket, how the heck does this not pop off the nose come? Also is the kit technically breaking its own rules? It primary just fictions a fire starting rocket.
