Colwood Allandale gravel quarry on Southern Vancouver Island

Ah, I thought about Colwood when you mentioned "gravel pit"... I am nearby- just up by the University, and sometimes fly at Lansdowne School (without formal permission, so it's a bit sketchy)

I've sent you a message with my email.

Oh dear. Now I've read this thread, and it will be rather difficult not to mentally read your posts in a stereotypical Canadian accent.

Good to see we've got some representation from our northern neighbors!

Hey there, are these "organized launches" in any way. Can you explain the 50 people out to watch?

Just trying to note any options for Canadians to join up for flying rockets here: https://maphub.net/BruceAleman/CAR-ACF

I put a point on the map, but a website/contact info would be great, even if you just throw up a free website or facebook page that people can get in touch with you through. That way I can post the link on the map, and you become the contact person...let me know!

Jonathan here. BAR flying with the CSC. I live right next to the main CSC launch field in Guelph and work next door to AllRockets.ca in Waterloo - which makes it pretty easy and convenient to burn all my wife’s hard earned money.

Flying is fun, but scratch building absolutely everything is what floats my boat. Running out of room, so bulding and designing electronics and the corresponding software has been keeping me out of trouble lately.

Question - slightly off topic:

For the Canucks flying HPR down in America Land, how do the certification logictics of that work? Are you able to get your CAR L1 at a US based launch? At least the practical part? Is a CAR membership sufficient? Personally, sub ~700g, F/G feels like the sweet spot for me but I’ve been contemplating the trip across the border to a “serious” launch next summer....

Hey Jonathan

To fly down south you have to be part of the organization that is sponsoring the launch (NAR or TRA). NAR and TRA have an agreement that they recognize each others insurance but CAR/ACF is not part of that. There is a reciprocal agreement for recognizing levels for each organization but there are nuances beyond the recognition. For someone who is NAR or TRA certified and looks to a CAR/ACF equivalent level the individual must still write a test for the Transport Canada portion of the test package (basically do you know the Canadian rules for launching) to actually be certified under CAR/ACF.

Ontario does not seem to have a lot of HPR fields, none from a CAR/ACF perspective but TRA seems is active there.

Hello all! I'm in New Brunswick and fly with NB Rocketry. Currently busy with university so I am not on TRF as much as I used to be. Haven't built anything in a while, but have been actively flying at most of the club events. I also help run a model rocketry club at my university.

Cheers!

Sebastian

Another BAR that used to fly in the late 70's/80's as a kid, (when I could afford it) and picked it up again at the turn of the century when I found out that motors come in sizes bigger than "D"... Mo moto' mo money.

Past President of the Edmonton Rocketry Club, current Public Relations director. Looking forward to getting out to Fire and Ice this year.

Occasionally go to Rock Lake, been to LDRS 24 there which was fun!. Definitely want to go check out some of the big launches in the States one day...

We will call this the "Westshore Rocketry Group". It was founded back in May 2016 by myself as an educator - Jordan Whyte. The rocketry program runs as a part of our Applied Skills and Design course for TechEd in middle school and became more spectacular each year. Rocketry caught on with the local community and with several pro-rocketry newspaper articles behind us, we'll be launching in February with a sizable crowd.

https://www.google.ca/maps/@48.430856,-123.4976505,15.75z

Location is between Veterans Memorial Parkway (highway) and the Colwood Municipal Yards.

These are launches that the community are invited out to watch. I've launched close to 100 rockets in the past 4 years on various CTi and AeroTech model rocket motors.

We launch from October until the start of fire season (early May).

Some nice looking rockets and launches there!

Great to see! Thanks. I've updated the site location and given the name. If you ever put together a website or facebook group site, please let me know and I can drop it in there so people have a way to contact you.

Happy flying!

3 years ago - I had my students research a cine-design rocket to shoot full HD video from the rocket using an RC runcam. We got a CTi P29-3G 159G118 and a CTi P38-1G 141G115 donated and these were the results...

Hello, Garret here.
I live in the interior of BC in Kamloops. Lots of fields to fly on around here and super open (but covered in sagebrush) terrain. I haven't made any connections with local farmers to get permission, and the sagebrush is brutal for losing rockets unless you have trackers.
Doesn't seem like there are a lot of people into rocketry out this way unfortunately.
I'm also involved in the Makerspace in town, which is pretty awesome if you're into building your own designs... helloooooo laser cutter and 3D printer!

Most of the ranchers in Kamloops are pretty easy to deal with. Savona area tends to be great if you can get to speak to an Elder in the local band you might be complete access. Most people I speak to are pretty much open to have a few launches off their property as long as they get an invite ;)

Excellent! Count me in. I have a few years of competition experience, and recently attended NARAM 60 in Colorado. I'll have to get a few models ready for flight in the new year. My Estes Interceptor E has never flown....

I’ve been flying rockets since 1968. Originally flew with the Canadian Rocket Society (Hillel Diamond) and have since moved on to the Astronautical Society of Toronto and most recently the Cambridge Rocket Club. I am also a member of the Canadian Space Modelling team and have competed in international events in the United States and the World Championships in Ukraine (2016). I recently competed at NARAM 60 and got a change to meet up with some great friends from the past. Perhaps the revival of CARNAT is in order? Sent

My current duties with the Cambridge Rocket Club have kept me very busy as I am trying to grow the hobby. We fly out of a sod farm in Guelph and have a very ambitious 2019 planned (refer to our website cambridgerocketclub.org).

Very nice! Looks like I might have to attempt a rocketry road-trip at some point this coming season!

Just because Saverio won't brag, I will do it for him... he did more than compete at NARAM 60 - he grabbed two medals, and was the top Canadian. 1422 seconds for ONE FLIGHT in 1/2A parachute duration is not just competing - its amazing. The only person to beat him BROKE THE NATIONAL RECORD to do it.

That IS pretty impressive!

Thanks for the kind word Hutch. If I can win two silver medals there is no reason another Canadian can not bring back a couple of Golds.

Wow! Care to share some pics of the rocket and your build/flight? Start a new thread! Or better yet, send it to me for Earthrise :)
