I want to purchase a new cutting mat and after looking on Hobbylinc I found that their selection is next to nothing and of course prices have climbed in the past years. Can any of you suggest a place to buy a decent mat without dropping a lot of coin? I checked Amazon wasn't too impressed with what I saw...just thought I might be looking in wrong place(s)??

Looking for an 18x24

Thanks!

Fabric stores, Hobby Lobby, most craft stores. I have them in 6x8, 12x18, 18x24 and when I need a big one for cutting fiberglass my wifes 24x36 ( I use a rotary cutter for FG clotth and CF twill).

While I have a self healing mat, I rarely use it.

I have a sheet of gyprock on my bench, cut the crap outta whatever, then replace it when it's bashed & battered. (and, you can push pins into it! to hold things in place! great if you also build R/C planes..)

I also have a sheet of glass for cutting & assembly work on. Glass under things like monocote or balsa works wonders too. Glue globs with a scraper also come off easily..

They have great prices on self healing builder mats from HOBBICO. See my purchase invoice.

Product Quantity Price

Hobbico - HCAR0455 - Builder's Cutting Mat 18x24 1 $12.99

Hobbico - HCAR0456 - Builder's Cutting Mat 24x36 1 $21.99

Subtotal: $34.98

Shipping: $9.99 via Economy Flat Rate Shipping

Tax: $0.00

Payment method: Credit / Debit Card

Total: $44.97

My work bench is 24" x 72" so the larger 24x36 mat will be perfect. I went ahead and cleared everything completely off of it. So when I'm working on a project I just grab what I need from the storage cabinet and use just what I need. This allows more room and less clutter and less chance for a mishap, as in knocking stuff over. I just work better when I have a clean work area.

The 18x24 I'll use for in the field when I need it for cutting something etc

Anyway check out the site.

I don't know. "King Cobra of Florida" sounds a little fishy to me. I just checked and Walmart carries the Hobbico mats too. You might pay a little more, but I'd be more inclined to purchase from an established vendor, you know?

I feel they reputable. It's not like the prices are super cheap, but what you would expect to pay and what I remember paying for them when I bought them from Hobbylinc. I'll let you know when they arrive.

Those and Fiskars blade are great but less so when you spill epoxy on 'em...

Hey, that's one of the mats I own and it's even cheaper than what I paid for it! Seriously though, I bought mine here were they're no longer available because they were sold via the bankrupted Hobbico.

You can read all of the reviews though which should apply to most mats.

I actually called King Cobra. They are legit. What the rep said was that Hobbico was bought out by Horizon and the mats are not available at this time, until Horizon gets them checked into their inventory. So King Cobra is processing a refund for me. The mats probably won't be available until this Spring. At which time I'll buy from King Cobra because they seem to have the best prices, unless Horizon cam match their price?

If you plan on cutting any fabric for long lengths such as body tubes Jo Ann;s has a 36 x 59 inch cutting mat for 69 dollars, look for coupons up to 40% off for Jo Ann's. This is the best bang for the buck if your doing long lengths of fabric. This is what I use. Because of the borders you can cut 60" cloth.

That is a great deal, but it won't fit on my work bench that I have it's 24x72 so it would definitely over hang. I was thinking maybe I could use it on one of my mobile benches, but again its way too wide.

Massive cutting mat selection here: https://www.cutting-mats.net/ Their mats are well-described and come in pocket to huge sizes. The "hobby" style mats are 2mm thick, while the more serious ones are 3mm thick. They will cut down a stock size Rhino or Magic Mat to a custom size at no extra charge, so you could get that 24x72.

Besides a mat, I use a 12x24 gloss ceramic tile as a hard and reasonably accurate build/cut surface. Harder to scratch than glass, less glare and a LOT cheaper.

Yeah don't use epoxy and especially not super glue on a self-healer. Gorilla Glue is right out.

I have purchased some cutting mats from Amazon in the past, 18" x 12" and smaller sizes, and they were shipped flat in a box that was large enough for them and they arrived fine for use. But I read some reviews that some buyers received their mats (probably larger sizes) rolled up to fit in a smaller box, and they are almost impossible to get them to lie perfectly flat again. Something to think about if having them shipped rather then buying from a store, like Walmart or Hobby Lobby, etc.

I have bought 3 larger mats from Amazon and am satisfied with all. I also must admit I am a Prime member so shipping is free. I don't really use the markings on a regular basis, but occasionally will use the grid as a square or a rough ruler.

I bought a 36x24" mat from Amazon a few years ago. It was shipped in a ridiculously large flat box (flat, not rolled), for free (I'm prime). There are probably better deals available than what I paid 3 years ago, but here is the link from my order history:

I will probably order another one later this year, as the current one is getting banged up, also online. My local WalMarts are stocked by blind mice.

YMMV,
