Howdy Tom ... mind if I tag along as I'm currently building the same Osprey kit from MadCow and could use the files.

Good luck on your build!

Just a quick note on my query. Representatives from Madcow Rocketry were very kind to advise that they did not have any Osprey kit Rocksim files or instruction sheets available electronically but did give me some helpful dimensions to aid in constructing a sim file myself.

Working to that end and have constructed a very rough Madcow Osprey Rocksim file but want to receive and inspect the actual kit first to ensure the weight and lengths of components are correctly compiled.

Will be happy to share the aforesaid sim file once completed with the caveat of absolutely no representations or warranties of excellence or even competence given no flight tests or peer review to date.

As a side note hoping the eBay coupler and body tubes will be sufficiently large enough to house redundant electronics and recovery systems for a high altitude L3 attempt. My rough Rocksim file estimate indicates a plus 700 knot (Mach 1.1) and 13K AGL flight on an AT DMS M1350W-PS. Obviously I plan to pack GPS and low frequency radio trackers to aid in recovery.

Additionally I am also considering employing Apogee Components proposed GPS Guided Recovery System in this build if the price and sizing are right.

Going to NARCOM 2019 and looking forward to Mr. Tim Van Milligan’s presentation on the GPS Guided Recovery System for additional information.

Sounds like a great and solid plan Tom. Your Osprey should provide all the incentive to obtain your L3 successfully.

I'm starting on the Osprey ElecBay first and incorporating two Missile Works RRC3 altimeters, a MW GP T3 tracker system and a Run Cam Split S camera as ("just because" ...LOL) I'm a retired photographer. Besides the electronics, I'm seriously considering using a piston ejection on the forward section to punch out the laundry. I also had Scott at SC Precision custom make a really beautiful thrust plate (4.5" / 75mm) and will use the requisite Aero Pack retainer to snug the motor.

As for early flight goals, I'm not really looking to go as high as yours Tom ... I think 12k is pretty close to my target. I tend to build somewhat heavy and with the added weight to utilize a camera plus the forward piston mine should be a tad slower and lower than yours. My plan is to run a few test flights (K/L) before attempting M/L3 status. I do have a complete AT 75/5120 motor on order, but who knows when that puppy will show up!!!

All in all the Osprey is shaping up to a really nice project.

Good luck on your Osprey / L3 cert Tom.

Great and quick response. You are light years ahead of me on your Osprey build. That said I will carefully consider your reasoned choices for your L3 build as I proceed. The piston ejection plan for the forward section sounds very interesting indeed.

By the way your E-bay electronics construct is almost a carbon copy of what I had planned to do. Noteably your Run Cam Split S camera system choice also looks very interesting as photography is very important to me as well. Are you mounting the camera inside the nose cone shoulder, E-Bay, or outside the hull? Also envious of your thrust plate. Sounds like a real gem.

As a side note when my Osprey build is complete I almost certainly will probably find that my planned altitude will be very close to your proposed flight range. Really wish I had the vast expanse of the American West to fly safely above 10K.

I also like your plan to fly progressive flight sequences before your L3 run. Are you looking to use a 75mm-54mm motor adapter to keep the motor costs down during the first test flights?

Again thanks for your advice and well wishes. Please let me know how your Osprey does when she spreads her wings.

Very best,
Tom Z

Tom, the plan is to mount the Split S cam inside the ElecBay and will record from a horizontal viewpoint catching smiling or frowning faces as the case may be ...lol On the 75/54 adapter side ... yes, already have the appropriate Aero Pack adapter along with various 54mm motors from previous efforts.

As far as the western open sky, turn your eyes toward Dorothy's Kansas my friend .... Argonia and the center of the great USA

Respectfully

John-

Thanks for the advice. Did put in an order for a Split S and plan to follow your solid horizontal eBay mounting concept. As a side note still working with U 838 cameras on mid power flights but they have been squirrelly at best.

By the way you are very lucky to live in the vast and beautiful plains of Kansas. I bet you can see from horizon to horizon forever. Dorothy got it right. A very special place in the USA.

Again thanks for you posts. Learned a lot and for sure “imitation is the kindst form of flattery”.

Very best,
Tom Z

Hi'ya Tom ... actually I'm in Texas.

I was referring to Argonia KA as a great place to L3 ... LDRS in August. Can still see from horizon to horizon depending on what part of TX I'm in ... lol It's big and diverse.

I'll keep you updated as things go and hope you'll do the same.

John

John-

My wife and I did a "NASA Center in the South and West" (Huntsville, Houston, White Sands, etc) trip two years ago and she (and I) fell in love with Texas. In my humble opinion unless you put boots on the ground in Texas you really can not appreciate Texas. Not going to move from my home on the Ohio River but Texas is a special place indeed.

Some day we plan to attend a major High Power Rocketry event if the stars align.

Thanks for sending me any updates that you wish. All very much appreciated.

Tom Z
