My, son and I are new to rockets, building an apogee zephyr. was thinking of using the reloadable cesaroni 01 grains for a while, then trying for a level 01 certification. the apogee website wanted to charge 200.00 in hazmat fees for 3 motors. Where in NC or on the internet can I find motors that I don't have to sell my house for shipping?
 
Find a local club and see if there vender sells CTI if you want to avoid HAZMAT. But. The HAZMAT fee is only $32. Not sure where they got $200. Or go with aerotech hobbyline. No HAZMAT . Wildman Rocketry has 35% off retail for club members. Pays for itself after one motor case and two reloads.


Disregard the hobbyline, just seen that rocket was 38mm motor. Still a lot of Aerotech 38mm motors with no HAZ
 
The other option for Hazmat-free 38 mm motors is Loki. The case will cost more than the CTI case, but if you'll make up for that price quickly by not paying hazmat. The 38-120 case has awesome G motors, and the 38-240 case will be perfect for your L1 attempt--all without hazmat.

Edit: It looks like William beat me to it. Lots of Loki fans around here.

You won't find any CTI motors shipping with no HAZMAT. They must've charged Hazmat for each one and would probably refund the overages but still...
As mentioned for the small 38mm motors it's hard to beat the Loki 38/120. They come in two packs, downside is no greens, no blacks and no starters. Loki H144 in the 240 case is a very nice little motor.
 
If you are in North Carolina ,why are you not buying from Ken at Performance Hobbies? He is in Goldsboro and goes to most east coast launches FYI you can't cert L1 on a CTI Pro38 1grain.
 
As Jim points out the one grain case has G motor maximum so can't be used in an L1 cert (H or I motor minimum). Considering you want to fly a few before going for an L1, I would get a 2-Grain case with 1 spacer. This would allow flying any CTI 1 or 2 grain motors and you only need to buy one case instead of 2. CTI is by far the easiest to assemble and so I think the best for starting and getting L1.

I don't know if this is still the case, but the last time I ordered motors from Apogee, they didn't pack many motors to a box. That ended up costing a bunch of extra Hazmat charges. If you can buy 10 motors at once, the Hazmat doesn't bite too badly. I buy from AMW (amwprox.com) but there are a few other vendors as well. As local as you can is awfully nice.

Don’t buy the 2 grain case; buy the Cesaroni starter kit. You get a 3 grain case which you can use with up to two spacers for more flexibility than buying a two grain case and a 6 grain case. That kit allows you to fly every reload from 1-6 grains.
If not that, then buy the 3 grain case and two spacers.

Agreed, if you know your going to want to keep flying bigger motors then it's a great choice. At 130.99+shipping it is a significantly bigger commitment to the hobby https://wildmanrocketry.com/collections/cesaroni-tech-38mm/products/p38-starter-set
 
I am in the Loki motor camp on this one. 38/120 case is great. Has G motors in red cocktail, white, spit fire and blue. Although the blue is a G94 so it’s technically a high power motor. The 38/240 case has the same motors in the H motor range. All these ship with no Hazmat.
