This launch didn't go so well. The nose cone came off and one of the fins shattered during the recovery. This result could have been due to the trimming of the parachute that I did or due to weak balsa products in this particular kit. I wonder if anyone else has had trouble with weak balsa in Semroc Astro 1 kits?

 
from what I can see in the video, my impression /question is, are you sure the you had the grain oriented correctly(parallel to the leading edge)?

The way that fin broke looks like you built it with a "pop" fin... With the grain orientated the wrong direction. Also, balsa isn't exactly crush proof. Did you do anything to harden your nosecone? Say, use some super thin CA to seal and harden it after you glued the eye bolt in?

In looking at their image online, the fins are not oriented the way yours were glued on.

The way that fin broke looks like you built it with a "pop" fin... With the grain orientated the wrong direction. Also, balsa isn't exactly crush proof. Did you do anything to harden your nosecone? Say, use some super thin CA to seal and harden it after you glued the eye bolt in?

no...i didnt do any hardening of the nose cone. And I probably should have used some sort of adhesive to make that eye screw more secure to the nose cone.
 
I suspected as much. those type of fins are easy to attach in the wrong orientation (the Estes alpha has a similar type, and Estes put in a marking hole to show which edge is the root). you still might have gotten some light balsa. papering fins can help.

just checked the instructions...i see what you are saying now....i glued them on in the wrong orientation.

yeah...i see what you mean...i keep looking at the instructions and that orientation is kind of confusing....but i agree that they were glued on in the wrong orientation...thanks

SOP for balsa nosecones is to screw the eyebolt in, back it out, then fill the hole created with some white or wood glue, and screw the eyebolt back in before it dries. This helps prevent the loss of the cone. Hardening it afterwards with CA or a wood hardener just prevents dings and helps it look pretty (https://www.rocketryforum.com/showt...rial-Making-Balsa-Nosecones-Look-Like-Plastic).

So the last Semroc Asto 1 launch ended with a couple mishaps – that is the nose cone coming loose from the ejection chord and a broken fin on the recovery.

This launch is of the new Astro 1 kit that I received. I made sure to make the building adjustments by orienting the wings properly and putting glue on the screw eye when I mounted it to the nose cone.
