Oh! No issue, as I am sure I could fit a mailing tube. Being a 3D print, these are probably better suited for paper tube anyway. It was just that filament fiberglass was all I had on hand to try it out on.

For that matter, a lighter 3-fin might be acceptable as well, possibly with a slightly longer root end (?)
New version fits 3.1in LOC/standard tubes. I'll definitely try out designing a 3 fin version with slightly longer root end.

Any pics of the one you printed? I want to see how all the overhangs did.

My printer will be down a few days for repairs. I got some leaking around the nozzle I need to fix.
 
Here is a shot of the can I printed. The stringy mess had to be sanded off, otherwise the print seems quite solid. A little clear coat or paint would take care of the dull that the sanding introduced to the external skins of the print.

Mine required almost not sanding. I would have not had the same result with SLIC3R.
 
Just started printing one out of some extra blue crystal PETG I had laying around. 0.45 layer height has Cura predicting a 21hr print with 25% infill. We'll see how it goes!
 
I did a 20% infill and 0.4mm and it took just over 24 hours.

I may try to add a layer of CF or Fiberglass over it.
 
I gave what was left of my Amazon Basics PETG to a friend at work who is going to print the can on his Prusa. Of course he will apply his own setting, but it will be interesting to see if he has any issues with stringing. If not, then I will need to play with my settings in Cura to see if I can reduce them.

I had the damndest time with stringing with SLIC3R. I tried everything to fix it until I read a youtube review that said that SLIC3R was the problem. I switched to SIMPLIFY3D and used the stock setting I have had no problems since.

Tell him to print the new file I uploaded to Thingiverse as it fits standard tubes and has better fillets.
 
As it turns out, the material I used for the fincan, Amazon Basics PETG, was not the culprit of the stringing. I gave the Amazon Basics PETG to my work friend who printed a small rocket out of the material, and he had maybe two strings on a 5-hour print. He is slicing with Simplify 3D and printing with a Prusa printer (not sure what build).
 
Some stringing on large prints is usually a given with PETG, but you can reduce it with good settings.
 
Stringing with PET is usually either bad retraction settings, printing too hot, or printing too fast.
 
A friend of mine has a 3d printer he's not using and is going to let me have it. I like the idea of 3d printing fins because of the precision and i'm terrible at anything requiring craftsmanship hah. What materials work best in terms of mass, strength, and $$?

I would recommend PETG. It's very strong, durable and pretty easy to print. I personally use eSun PETG and it prints perfectly, very similar to the easyness of PLA. In terms of cost, it sells at ~$20 for 1kg (2.2lbs).
 
How did it turn out?
Not terribly...but stringy due to the infill. I'd actually recommend printing it with 5-6 perimeters and no infill to avoid it. Currently on vacation, but will post a picture when I get back.
 
I recently replaced my extruded after an incident. I have had near zero stringing since.
