Gotta give credit where credit is due: the attached PDF is my drawing; the JPG illustration above is from Russian scale spacemodeling data - which I could use to improve my drawings!

The detailed JPG was created by the famous Vladimir Minakov.
I would love to have more of his drawings especially the high res ones. Missles I am looking for are Nike Ajax, Army Hawk, and any others by Minakov. Anybody know where to get them?

Ok, so Minakov gets a special folder. I'm gonna go get the stick and work on it while I watch football today. I'm almost to the point where I can put it all up and finish organizing from there. Gonna take a big chomp outta my monthly bandwidth. Sigh, it's gonna take the rest of the OU-TX game to back up the stick.

Dave knows.

Now if I could just read the Russian books by Minakov the pictures look like the info inside would be a scale rocket modellers best friend, well after Peter Always Art of Scale Model Rocketry. Right now though I have to read the books like my 3 year old, oooh pretty pictures....:)

Someone was kind enough to pass some of his files to me, and I should add that some drawings are findable if you translate "rocket model copy" into Russian (копия ракеты-носителя) and then google image search on it. You'll find things if you poke around enough.

I've looked at a lot of Minakov's work (for those who don't know, he died a few months ago, after some years of ill health), and have some thoughts. First, he drew to a greater level of detail than I've ever aspired to, with every weld line, rivet, and metal joint. I confess that I find the results a bit hard to read, as it isn't always obvious what sort of detail a line represents. On the other hand, it makes really detailed models possible. I confess that I've tried to cover more subjects with less detail. I also am quite happy to use his drawings as information sources--you'll see his name in the "sources" section of my drawings.

One thing I don't like about Minakov's drawings is that he didn't list source on is drawings, as far as I can tell (perhaps they are buried in the accompanying text, though I've run it through Google translate several times. So I'm never sure if his work is based on manufacturer's drawings, measurements of artifacts, or just a lot of photo-interpretation. I try to be pretty up-front about my sources, including tilde (~) markings for approximate dimensions calculated from photos.

I happen to disagree with Minakov on measurement systems. All of Minakov's drawings are in millimeters. This is entirely appropriate for Soviet, Russian, and European subjects. But doing this with American rockets, like the Patriot, can introduce rounding errors. I prefer to use the units in which the rocket was designed.

Anyway, I have a great deal of respect for Minakov's work. I intend to incorporate his information on Soviet/Russian rockets into the next edition of "Rockets of the World," but i'll never match the level of detail he covers in many of those rockets.

Rich,

GOOGLE TRANSLATE is your best friend, "Comrade" ! ( Example below from one of Minakov's books )

TEXT :

TRANSLATION :

Foreword
The author of the study is a staff member of the Moscow
city palace of children's and youthful creativity. Therefore, first of all, I would like to note
the specificity and importance of the system of additional education of children, as well as a special place in it
technical creativity of students.
The domestic education system has always differed from foreign ones in that, in addition to
learning (knowledge, skills) a great attention was paid to the education and comprehensive development of
the younger generation. A great contribution to solving these problems was made by out-of-school education and
education. Today, this task is entrusted to institutions of additional education for children (UDOD),
is particularly relevant.
According to the law of the Russian Federation "On Education", education is understood as
purposeful process of education and training in the interests of the individual, society, state,
accompanied by a statement of achievement by the citizen (students) established
state educational levels (educational qualifications).
In the National Doctrine of Education in the Russian Federation, the main objectives and
educational tasks, according to which, from system positions, in addition to learning tasks,
formulate the following areas of educational work:

That reminds me of a book I have written in 1890, reading the language in use then requires a little bit of thought since it doesn't flow the way english does today.
