Hi Gang,
What will be the best way to get information about the anticipated releases of the Little Joe 1 and Saturn V kits from Estes?
I don't want to miss out on these models, as I plan to launch them at the 50th Anniversary Launch in July 2019 and I want to have enough time to get the Saturn V built...
When and where is a good place to get notification about the releases?

Thanks!
Franz in NJ

On the Estes website, upcoming releases are usually listed in the "Coming Soon" section. Upon release you can find them in the "What's New" section ( on the right side of the page). As you can see the Little Joe I is scheduled to be released sometime this month.

That Little Joe looks nice. I just finished the last iteration of the Saturn V, so I won't be picking up the new version, but I don't have a Little Joe yet. I'd also like to build another Redstone. My first one looks like poo, lol.

"so I won't be picking up the new version"

The new version is completely new. The only thing the same are the injection molded fins and most of the body tubes.

Greetings John

So the wraps will be new? I have been flying one the older versions with paper wraps. Landed the upper section in a tree, so going to have to build a new one for next July. I have a few of the 30th Anniversary version. Can you offer any more detail on the release coming?
TIA
Jim

Odd that there is nothing listed in the coming soon section.

Nothing on the Estes website but A C Supply has had the Saturn V on their website for about a month with the status as “Coming November 2018”.

There is an Estes ad that includes the Saturn V on the inside cover of the Nov/Dec NAR Sport Rocketry Magazine that showed up in my mail box today.

The other Saturn V was briefly shown at the NARAM 60 manufacturers forum. It will be a 1/200 scale model, all molded in plastic and completely painted and ready to fly other then attaching the parachute.

"So the wraps will be new?"

Other then the new injection molded fins that made it into the last release every other piece of plastic is new. There is in fact a completely New plastic item that will make the build much easier while adding more scale detail. The capsule and escape tower are a piece of cake to assemble now. This version should be a more accurate version of the Apollo 11 launch vehicle.

I would say it's a little more robust then before but it's much easier to build now.

That's great to hear. I built a 2157 a few months ago and the vacuform fin fairings were a total PITA; I never got them to conform to the BT very well. I might have suggested that the fairings and fins be a single two-piece plastic part, but anything would be an improvement.

The one advantage of the old kit was that it was light; I wonder what the recommended motors for the new version will be.

That Saturn V looks pretty good. Hope the retail price plus shipping isn't too steep. Shame the local hobby shop went under a couple years ago.

This was mentioned in another thread yesterday, but I'll post it here to update: The 1969 Saturn V is now in the "Coming Soon" section on the Estes website. Recommended motors now are E12-4 and E30-4. List price is $89.99. AC Supply has it listed on their site as due in "Late December", priced at $53.99. Email notifications of when it becomes available are being taken at AC Supply, click on the link.

Hobbylinc has the Estes 1969 Saturn V available for pre-order at $61.69. Estes also added plastic replacement fins for the Sat V on their site, part number 073156, $5.99.

According to Doug at AC Supply, it is now looking like early January for the Saturn V. One thing is for sure, it will show up! Nothing like the anticipation of a newly upgraded kit to be available for purchase to test your patience. Based on John's comments above, it sounds like the patience for building will be better than before, so that's a bonus. :)

Hello Tyler, I too want to build the Little Joe...always have...there is something really cool about the history of the real Little Joe and its help to the space program. I have the Saturn V and just like you, i want to build a second redstone..My old one fits your description. I just had to reply, because we had similar thoughts...good luck with your building!

Thanks! Have fun building, as well! Great minds think alike, as they say! :)

Tyler P and spacemanning,
LJ I now in stock at AC Supply, $19 and change. Got mine in the mail a couple of days ago. And for the Mercury Redstone, have you considered refurbishing your models with wraps and molded plastic fins? Accur8 has 'em, no need to buy a new kit:

Keep your "United States" decal, it's not included. Carefully cut the balsa fins at the root, sand down to the paper tube, apply the plastic fins with CA, and touch up with paint. I suggest you use the "drop of soap in a dish of water" trick to apply the wraps, especially the roll pattern, because the adhesive is super strong. It will make your Redstone look good as new. Good luck!

@ThirstyBarbarian this is the 1/200th model I was talking about in the other thread, looks like it'll be a RTF plastic release, looks like a decent park flyer, but definitely not a builders model like its big brother. I'll pick up a few as gifts for the nephews and a few for myself as park flyers.

Thanks. I’m looking forward to checking it out when it’s released.

I would only build a new one because I want to build something, haha! It wasn't really a complaint, more of I'd like a fresh one to do it right! :)
