Where do you live? You could take it at the science education center in Wichita. That is how I did mine. I think you can also take it on site before you launch. Take the test get it scored and signed off.

Question: I’m planning on attempting a level 2 certification flight. It is my understanding that you have to take the written test prior to the flight.

Would it be possible to take the test prior to Airfest? Or do you take it on site?

I ask because I would like to try and fly it Friday pending optimal weather conditions.

You can take the written test anytime, but for Tripoli, only a Prefect, TAP, or Tripoli Board Member may administer the test. You must fly within a year of taking the test. Contact Bob Brown to see about taking the test if you live in his area. Otherwise, contact your local Prefect or TAP.

There will be many TAP and/or Prefect and/or TRA Board Members on site mid-day Thursday and throughout AIRFest. IDK where you are located (I wish people would add their location for many reasons), so arrange for it near you in the next two weeks or come out early and take care of it.

There is going to be a lot of work going on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. I invite you to come out and pitch in then take the test.

I can be there early Friday to help! The wife works late Thursday or else we would just come early.

Also, I’m near Manhattan!

The day is near for closing AIRFest 24 pre-registration: 8/13/2014. Monday.

You can save yourself some cash, guarantee a spiffy AIRFest 24 t-shirt and greatly streamline check-in at the field if you pre-reg. Not only that, you can do it from the cool comfort of home. It takes just a couple minutes.

After Monday, I get cracking on this end: t-shirt order, lots and lots of printing, flyer packet prep, etc., all in anticipation of the great annual convergence at the Argonia Rocket Pasture.

Sign up today and join the fun!

I wish I could be there but I have two prior commitments.

But, for anyone who just cannot make up their mind, AIRFest is run by one of the best crews ever and takes places at one of the best sites ever. If you have the time, but you’re just not sure, just do it. You’ll never regret it. Then plan to come back next year for LDRS 38.

WOW! Looking at the AirFest 24 website, it looks like close to 200 preregistered flyers this year. Too bad I can't make it this year, but I WILL be at LDRS next year!

Yeah, sitting at about 190 and the hotels tell me they're full. It should be a great weekend. We're going to miss you, Glynn.

Anyone know what flight line a “K” impulse launches from? Trying to incorporate on-board video for a flight and currently testing how long the camera will record before it’s out of juice.

I know at the bigger launches it is possible for your rocket to sit on the pad awhile.

K impulse will fly from either the 40’s pads or the 50’s pads unless I get scared then all bets are off!

I fly the Mobius1 ActionCam at the pasture and have never run out of power during a single flight/recovery. I used to fly the #808 key-chain "spy camera" series successfully as well. The Kloudbuster's run a first class operation and move through the racks efficiently. You did not specify your camera, but if you have at least a 30 minute run time, you should be good. Just for grins, I went back and looked at the OBVs (on board videos) that I shot at the last two AIRFest launches. Here is the elapsed time from camera turn on to motor ignition:

AIRFest 22 (2016):
Terminator: 7 minutes, 40 seconds
All American: 6 minutes 30 seconds

AIRFest 23 (2017):
Intimidator3: 6 minutes 19 seconds
Rogue One: 5 minutes 10 seconds
Rogue One: 3 minutes 35 seconds

All of the above flights were flown from the 40's or 50's pads. How is that for getting the birds in the air!

Some best practices:
Make sure you check the appropriate box(es) on the flight card calling out your on-board electronics. At the pad, wait for all of the other flyers at the rack to get their rockets prepped and check continuity. As the last of the flyers start walking back to the flight line, turn your camera on and head back. You can also be strategic about the timing of when you fly, watching the range and picking a time that is less busy. But at AIRFest it is always busy, which is why it is the place to be on Labor Day weekend !!

Wow, those are some nice stats!

Unless of course it is a Sparky Motor of any kind, then it will fly from the 60's/70's pads out in the dirt.

Gentle people:
Having no experience at Airfest (Argonia, KS) I'm curious what winds (ground and/or aloft) can be expected this time of year?

Anything from calm breeze (less than 5 mph) to windy (15 mph and gusting). It just depends on the weather. Typically if it is kind of windy it will be better in the mornings that throughout the day. Either way it could be hot and plan on taking water/gatorade, etc along with you when you retrieve rockets.

Rich, it's always windy except when it's not! Surface winds can run up to 19.9 MPH and the winds aloft can be much higher. Fly dual deploy rockets with very small (or no) drogue chutes and you should be fine. Any given AirFest we will fly upwards of 1000 high power flights with a few of them going above 40,000'AGL. Put a tracker in your rocket and you will get it back. Unlike other venues you may have been to, we don't really have many trees or any lakes to deal with. The launch site is surrounded by miles of flat farmlands with 90% of them plowed this time of year. The other 10% will have crops in them making retrieval with a tracker much easier.

↑ What Bob said. It's windy and use a tracker. I have, however, been amazed to see quite a few flyers retrieve rockets that go out of site, no tracker, with only a general direction of where to head. I don't have the time, energy, or luck to spend an afternoon in the heat looking for a rocket. Think about it. You spend your time, travel, food, and (possibly) lodging expenses, as well as the modest registration fee to attend a launch. It costs hundreds of dollars just to attend. Now look at the cost of the rocket, motor case, and electronics - possibly hundreds more. Why not invest in a tracker to ensure you get your rocket back and save time.
