Hey Gang,
Gonna be putting this kit and a MadCow 3" Sport X together for Level 1 Certification attempts in August/September....

Anyway, what is the best/easiest way to adapt the 54mm mount that the MDRM kit has down to a 29mm CTI casing that I have for the Madcow Sport X... I like the way the Aeropack system works but it doesn't look like there is a way to go from 54mm down to 29mm...

LOC has the system on the 4" Goblin kit to go down from 54mm to 29mm with insertable end cap/tubes, but I'm not sure that I could get that from LOC by itself...

Any ideas or suggestions?

By the way, this MDRM clone kit is huge! The fins are solid wood! Could prolly L2 cert with this guy as well!

Cheers!

Uh.....I think I figured it out.....LOC sells the 4" LOC N Ring system by itself.....That should let me do the same thing with the MDRM as they do with the 4" Goblin...
Ok, that should be easy....
Carry on, I'll post some build photos soon!

If you have a AeroPack retainer, starting with a 54mmt, use the AeroPack 54/38 reducer, then install the AP 38/29 reducer. They all nestle together. Just make sure you use all the parts. Heck, you can even keep going and use the 29/24 reducer too, if your 24mm motor has enough poop...
Yes, it's an expensive way to do it, but if you already have all the AP parts, why not...

Thanks for the info, that might be the easiest way yet!

Just make sure to pay attention to the weight you'll be adding to the aft end or your rocket when nesting multiple AP adapters.

Will do, I’m already thinking about sourcing a different nosecone for this build as the one in the kit isn’t long enough to look like a Red Max... It’s shorter like a Goblin shaped nose...

So here is the FWD MMT centering ring epoxied to the 54mm tube and a stainless steel u bolt double nutted into place... This shouldn’t budge under a J load ejection charge....IMG_1425.jpgIMG_1426.jpgIMG_1427.jpg

Here’s a quick question for you fine folks who have L2 experience... What length should I make the 54mm motor tube to be able to hold a CTI J motor casing? Should I calculate the length for a 54mm casing or a 38mm casing? I don’t want to leave it too long or I lose space for recovery laundry, and too short and the casing might stick up through the MMT...
Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

Yes, Aeropack retainers and adapters are great and easy. LOC also sells a 54-29 adapter for $7. With a little friction and kaplow clips makes cheap and easy fix.

I wouldn't worry about the motor sticking past the end of the motor tube or not. It makes little to no difference on your ejection charge. And that U-bolt isn't going anywhere. Some people add washers and epoxy to lock it in. And your ejection charge should not be "J" motor size based, but instead on the rocket bay volume.

Your question of Motor mount tube length... It needs to be at least as long as your fin root length. But a 54mm 4-5 grain motor would be just fine supported by 6-8" of motor mount tube. I would leave your motor mount tube the length it came unless you think you will have less then 12" of recovery space.

And if you want. I just found a couple in a box. Estes retainer just placed there for image. But would be a great cheap add on. I'll send you one if you want. Just pm me an address.

Thanks for the info and the offer, the adapters are already on the way, save them for yourself or someone else, but again thanks for the offer!

Continuing on with the fin can, much like the Loc 4” Goblin kit, you can build the fin can outside of the BT and then insert it after... 2 fins tacked onto MMT with CA... Gonna leave the rear centering ring loose until the fin can goes into the BT so that I can do epoxy fillets internally to the BT...IMG_1455.jpgIMG_1456.jpg

Fin can internal fillets are done...IMG_1461.jpgIMG_1462.jpgIMG_1463.jpg
Shoved the fin can in the BT and slapped the larger NC on for a mock up picture.... Proportions of MDRM pretty close...IMG_1467.jpg

So....jump ahead to a “rough draft “ of the banner red body and semi gloss black nose, and this is where we are at today for a possible sub L1 flight (maybe) today.... Still needs paint and wet sanding but close enough for a quick pop shot ... The sticker is from a very tasty local coffee shop here in Monmouth and Ocean County, Rook Roasters....IMG_1519.jpg

Update: Today the Rook Rocket flew a Level 1 Certification flight on a CTI 3Grain H87 engine with a 7 second delay and a JLCR set at 300’... He weighed 65 oz and change, Open Rocket predicted about 840’... Successful launch and recovery! Now I’ll have some fun with him the rest of the season!IMG_1656.jpgIMG_1658.jpgIMG_1661.jpgIMG_1663.jpg

Welcome to High Power! Nice looking DRM too. Mine is still naked, so I didn't take it to Airfest, but looking forward to flying it next month at our local launch. I have a CTI K360 that looks good for a first flight to around 4600 ft.

Thanks, this guy has a 54mm tube in him, he could possibly do an L2 with an AV bay added to him, but I think I’ll keep in the H and I range....
Good luck with that special K!

Hey Gang,
Just a quick update about this rocket....Last weekend, it flew a successful Level 2 certification flight on a 54mm CTI J 145....
More details to be posted soon!

You can stack Aeropack adapters. Use both a 29to38mm and 38to54mm adapter together.
