Same here. 9 months, but I did not work at it regularly. But a lot of the time was spent posting questions on TRF and waiting for all the good answers to come in. Or needing to get to the HW store but can't go till the weekend, or stopping to build something smaller for another launch, or ....

Actually, I lie. That was my Formula 200 build. My Level 3 cert was on a MAC Performance kit that built in WAY less time. The documentation is the kicker for the L3 project, IMO.

This. I took 10 months....

Granted that is largely a function of how much free time you have.

Yeah i probably should have mentioned i have quite a bit of extra time with my new job i got :)

As an added note the ideas have been great and am still pondering so keep em coming

Of the Darkstars ive seen that one is up there among the most amazing finishes

My advice is to build something that can fly well under the waiver at your "home" field, whatever that may be.

If your waiver is 10K then build something that will do 3K - 5K on a small M. That will give you room to fly the larger "fun" motors you will find later.

If you want something different, think about up-scaling your favorite smaller rocket, like a 16" diameter Fat Boy?

My home HP field is Argonia im only 1.5 hrs from it so i can go any time i like :)

+1
One of the primary objectives of my L3 project is that I can fly it on M motors in the altitude range that I usually fly at Battlepark and MDRA, which is below 5000 ft. So it had to be a big rocket.

I like really big rockets that grind their way into the sky on a noisy pillar of smoke and flame. So, for an L3, I'd be looking at rockets that are 10" - 15" in diameter. I also like sci-fi-inspired designs --- you don't see many of those on cert attempts, and you don't see many of them built in very large scales. That's personally the direction I would choose, but everyone has different interests. My feeling is that many L3 rockets are in the high-performance category, so if you are looking for something different, chose something designed for cool style --- fantasy or scale.

+1.

Also, do not underestimate the amount of time it takes to complete a level 3 project. Airfest is just around the corner.

I started my L3 project about this time last year and flew the cert flight at last fall's Airfest. Had plenty of time.
