Grumbling with cleaning out a thin rough coat of sludge from my 54 case!?!

Did a bunch more work on the Nike Hercules over the last 2 days, cut 21 centering rings and bulkheads, and assembled the booster tubes and recovery bay for the booster. Next is the interstage coupler then on to the fins. Most kits of the Nike Herc don't do justice to the sustainer fins which are tapered from root to chord and the the root varies in thickness along the the entire length from narrow at the nose and aft ends to widest root near the aft end of the sustainer airframe just before the transition starts. So part of my goal with this build to get the sustainer fins as close as I can to they way the real ones are.

Started building my AMW FiberMax. Sanded all parts, used a file in the fin slots to open them up. Washed all parts and epoxied the forward CR and NC bulkplate.
My girlfriend also said I need to add that she started and finished her LOC Cool Spool. It took all of ten minutes.

Finally had enough of a break in the weather this morning to launch a few contest models before heading to ECRM in two weeks.

Launched rockets! (And had my very first lawn dart today. Luckily the ground was soft and the rocket was fibreglass so there was absolutely no damage besides some minor paint scratching!)

Haven't done anything rocket wise in a couple weeks.
I went to my buddy's house and dug out a kitchen knife set and sharpened them all and traded out the serrated set in the kitchen.
Also have been customizing a couple stag handle skinner's I plan to send to a couple buddies when they are done.
I have a third I need to add to the list to return a nice deed done for me of late.

Not so much what i did with a rocket in my hands but, the planning for the longest road trip i'll ever take to fly a few rockets. See with the announcement of LDRS 37 planned for Tripoli Central California next year. ALOT things have opened up for me.
The chance to see alot of my friends who now work in the Aerospace Industry in Sacramento and, Los Angeles. The chance to get the Hellcat out and, take a 2200 mile roadtrip down roads i used to roam when i drove over the road as a Truck Driver and, last but not least- A chance to fly a boatload of modified Madcow Bomarcs and, even an NCR in a great location.
The trip back through Las Vegas and, flying in the folks and, Anne for a week of fun before i drive back will also make it very enjoyable too!
With my recent visit to LDRS 36 out east i had the ability to finally meet Steve Shannon, Matt Fletcher (blackbrandt), Nate Lowrie (The NATE) and, of course John Sigmon
(Bat-mite) and, that alone made the 750 mile journey well worth the effort! :D
To me its not about the rockets but, the people who make it all worth the time, the money, the effort.
I won't know till January (when i bid my vacation time) IF i can make it but, it's pretty much a shoe in...Time will tell.
Best of all- I'll finally get a chance to meet Dave (fyrwrxz) and, eat a boatload of Hershey bars...

Making a laundry list of parts i still need and, hoping for good health and, good ventures in advance so far away from the days ahead! ;)

I'll see you there!

Airbrushed Testors Gloss White Acrylic onto a contest bird and ended up very disappointed with myself for thinning it too much and spraying too heavy. Now I have runs.

94% humidity in Huntsville this evening.
Guess who won't be painting today!?

Much the same here in Mobile. I ended up laying down newspaper in my air conditioned indoor workshop and broke out the rattle cans. Much happier now.

Eh Tango! Southern Thunder is coming in a couple weeks! Going to try the trip?

In other news, I am addicted to watching lead shot fall through epoxy. I'm working on the nose weight of Big Sam, and watching the high density spheres falling through a high viscosity fluid is dang near mesmerizing.

Did the first stack of the major components of the Nike Hercules today, its finally starting to look like a rocket instead of a bunch of mis-matched parts! Also the ISC is mostly complete, just the two trapezoid cut-outs needed plus some details, it was much easier to do than I thought it would be.

My lovely and wild assistant, holding the stack for the picture (aka Luci, my 2 year old).

Current stats for the rocket are 36 ozs (1029 grams) and 50.5" tall. Should come in near 6 lbs complete, finish is planned to be the traditional OD and White no spiral filling or any of that.

Did the last round of tip-to-tip fiberglassing on the fin can of my Terrordactyl. Not the easiest kit for learning the technique, but I'm having fun doing it.

This will be my L2 rocket. The attempt will probably happen at MMMSC in July or August. After cracking a fin last year in a shakedown flight, it's now built like a tank.

Nope, never heard of it before today. As chance would have it, that's my weekend to work anyway (every other weekend).

I've been pressed to complete a model for the "Classic Model" event, due in part to my work schedule and more recently because of the non-stop rain we've been having, making painting anything touch and go. My "cockpit windows" were supposed to be a decal, but somehow that got missed in the printing so I had to mask one. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out so well. I got bleed under, even using Tamiya tape.

The red band was also supposed to be a decal... And also got missed. 😞 And again, a painting/masking mistake.

I leave for a week of work again tomorrow, and when I get back, my GF and myself will hit the road for Maryland for ECRM44, so it's a little late in the game for me to keep re-doing things. Maybe I can clean it up some yet. Needless to say, I'm very disappointed in myself right now.

They say there is more than one way to skin a cat (which really upsets the felines that folks are thinking up these different methods...)

But I've been using an Accur8 skin kit on my Interceptor.
Nearly done...

Flew four models (Alpha, School Rocket, Estes V-2, Semroc repro Estes Trident) a total of 12 flights for a group of kids and adults who had never seen a model rocket before. Afterward there were profuse thanks for getting the kids away from video games for even the time it took to do this. Here's hoping there will be more model rocket flying near Mountainair, NM in the future.
