Jeff,
I am working on a 24mm motor sustainer with 18mm motor port and starboard SRBs based on the Ares system. I have up scaled this from a smaller rocket that I saw in Apogee news letter.
I am using dowels and launch lugs to hold the top of the SRBs to the sustainer and some really strong magnets to hole the bottom of the SRBs to the sustainer. I have a build thread coming.
But for MPR or HPR holding the SRBs to the sustainer securely and reliably separating them can be done. I would use a staging timer and some black powder in some set up to separate the SRBs.
I guess my big question is what is going to happen if not all three motors light?
On my rocket I am interested to see what happens if say one of the SRBs does not light as it is way further from the center line of the rocket. Will its flight be a long arc, go Cruse Missile, or will it pinwheel?
