That is a line of kits I would like to see come back but the hardwood nose cone put the nix on there return.

I would think the Laser Loc series would be fine with plastic cones. Always wanted the 3.1...looked great with that boat tail!

Right now I'm leaning bravado--first flight on three K400'ish EX motors.

Nice! That'd be a kick in the pants for sure! When I did the (4) 54-2550 sparky airstarts for the 3/4 Nike Smoke, I drilled the top 1.5" of the core to the same diameter as my Pyrodex pellets, then ignited using simple E-matches. Nice thing about using EX motors for clusters!

I have an original Mother Load, 7 1/2", real tall, 3 54mm motors.
I bought the kit with 3 K550 cases for $100!! 20+ years ago.
My friend Brandy assembled and painted it about the same time. It has never been launched but we are threatening to do it at BALLS now that we don't have to run the show.
It used to be we were afraid it would crash, now the altimeters, parachutes and recovery knowledge is much better so survival may happen.

M

Mark: nice! Another reason for me to try to get to Balls this year! That thing was/is a monster! Are the lower tubes 3" tubes with 54mm mounts in them? Like you said, no time like the present; get her in the air!

There was a Mother Load at LDRS that flew Friday. unfortunately recovey was with a trash bag. Jack Thompson from Ohio built just about all the custom LOC Kits. back then I could barly afford a PML Quasar and here comes Jack with his custom rocket rack in the back of his truck deciding which one to fly as I was drooling

I remember seeing photos of his collection at Danville launches; also remember seeing that a cluster of 3 AT J125's didn't quite go so well and ended up with a scrapped Mother Lode.

And so then there is one more MWP vintage participant!

I don't think Jack Thomson does rockets anymore. I purchased a trio of Aerotech/Loc 54/852 cases off of Ebay from him many years ago.

That's one plan. CTI 29 6xl H226 SK in the center and CTI 24 6 grain G100's SKD's in the outboards... Hmmm

Adrian

I'll supply the thermalite!

I've got an LOC Ultimate Max from Bob Jablonski that I am putting the final touches on for this year, 7 38's most likely J425's

Gary, looking forward to (hopefully) seeing that fly! Memory check: did you pick up a Top Gun too? Side note: one of the coolest looking clusters I've ever seen lit all at once was a blend of reds on the inside and a smokies on the outside: killer unique look to it!

Seeing that photo of the snow and the sawdust made me think... a nosecone made out of pykrete. I wonder what the Mythbusters would make of that.

Last update for now....

Bob had the Top Gun drop shipped from Loc. After learning this, I felt it appropriate to simply have Loc cut a set of Esoteric fins and send them along right away. They cut a nice set of four 9mm Baltic Birch fins; nice straight cuts and all evenly matched...nice!:D

But I just can't leave those edges square, and I don't want to hand sand bevels or even round edges onto these meaty things. So, out comes the beveler machine (aka router table set up for beveling fins). Saturday's high was around 0 with wind chills in the hearty negatives, Sunday looked a lot more promising with highs in the teens and *only* a 40% chance of snow. Having a little extra time and enough motivation, fin bevels were completed on Sunday.

A bit cool, wind present, and just a hint of snow. Wood dust + snow = oatmeal consistency mess that clings to coats, hats, gloves, and face that refuses to let go! For those that complain about a 50 degree workshop being too cold and prohibiting progress....suck it up!

Before fin on the right and After fins on the left. (And Griffin's 5" cone on the slight left...hey Griff we need to trade one-of-these-days!)

Now, THAT'S hardcore!

So Nik Byra flew his outstanding Esoteric a few weeks back at Midwest Power. After a busy summer/fall, that was enough motivation to get progress on these birds rolling again.

I'll skip a few steps and show an unintended photo of the Esoteric booster. She's all glued up and awaiting a bit of glass...didn't really need it but I have a strange addiction to glassing paper tubes. Also shown are the 5.5" payload tube and 7.67" upper transition airframe also being glassed.

In the meantime, work on the mold for the transition progressed. The first half is completely complete as shown below. The second half was laid up last evening and is ready for trimming. Hoping to have the first transition out of the mold in the next week or so.

No other *new* photos, so here's a pile of old ones. I was paging through some old issues of HPR and even Tripolitans:y:

...and finally for now:

My old man reincarnated the Top Gun from Red Arrow and flew it at Midwest Blast I in Three Oaks, MI on an Aerotech K550W....

....and then again at Midwest Power 14 in Princeton IL on a CTI K520W:

More updates to come in the near future. Thanks all!

Eric,

Can you get me a measurement of the transition length, both shoulders and the transition?

thanks
mike

Dimensions would be great. I have a few pieces of 3.72" glass tubing left that could make a nice half-scale model using a 3D printed transition...

Looking good Eric! I cant wait to see more! Good call with the fiberglass, something I should have done as well.
-Nik

One of my favorites! Weren't those motors Hellfire's?

I think Vulcan I283 Low Smoke's if I remember correct. I've flown one, but never three at a time!

Dan, I like your style. I bet 7 of those new 29mm hardware sets would fit just about right in the rear end!

Looking forward to seeing more! :)

Thanks Justin!!!

Thanks Nik!!! I personally think your Esoteric turned out flawless...no need for glass, just went in that direction. The Top Gunn, which I'll post a few photos of shortly is mostly glassless.

Eric, ill assume your fins are like mine and connect to the outer motor mounts. Theres not much tab there, anyway mine got a small stress crack in the fillet so fiberglassing would be good. I cant wait to see the top gunn. Ive been slacking on mine so i am sure those pictures will give me some motivation to get my butt back at it.

Transition Mold Progress:

Unfortunately everything doesn't always go exactly to plan. The bond between surfaces of the plug (balsa:lacquer primer:enamel paint: lots of wax) was lesser than the Rocketpoxy gelcoat of the mold. The result was a significant portion of the painfully smoothed surface of the balsa plug was left behind on the new mold halves. This took quite a bit of time to carefully remove the paint/primer/balsa without damaging the surface of the mold.

221_zpsrtqja8zj.jpg

Frustrating, a setback, but we shall persevere.

Lots of slow chipping away made for lots of paint bits and shrapnel!

222_zpsp0f5ak6y.jpg

After the chipping was complete, some final trimming, light sanding, and even filling was required. The part's surface is only as good as the mold's surface, which is only as good as the plug's surface...etc.

248_zpsugn8biwx.jpg

After the filler dry, I went Totally Naked in order to preserve my patience and sanity. We're finally ready for some progressive 400-600-800.....2000 grit sanding on the areas touched up, followed by 3M Finesse-It.

250_zpsdipxrqzt.jpg

10 coats of mold release were added and subtracted. Wax on....wax off Mr. Miyagi. Did that yesterday. Layed up the first part tonight....the prototype if you will. We'll see how it turns out in a day or three!

Top Gun: what's old is new again!

In the meantime, the one balsa transition I have is finally free for use. It transitions the Top Gun that has been in progress in the background for some time. Unfortunately that smooth transition is now pretty ragged and awaits further rounds of filling, sanding, priming, and repeating. Though I have a fresh kit (minus a transition) waiting in a box, I love a good revitalization project; this thing is truly a collection of parts and pieces with storied past.

From top to bottom:
-5.5" nosecone from retired rocket friend Al Casper. Will strip it down and give it some new color
-1" long blue ring: 5.5" cardboard from a shortened rocket flown aplenty.
-7" long 5.5" carbon fiber tube: not sure what this was used for, but got this many years back from Dr. Frank Kosdon....miss you Frank!
-Balsa transition: served as the plug for the mold. Due to the stripping of paint mentioned above, needs a beauty makeover!
-10" long 7.5" Loc tube: this one actually came with the kit...something new for a change!
-Primered 7.5" tube. The booster mentioned next needed a new top. Glassed it as an anti-zipper measure.
-Orange/white/black original Top Gun booster. From friend and fellow old rocket nut Nik Byra, Nik GENEROUSLY gifted this to me after he decided to build a new booster for this particular bird. Needs a little TLC, and I'm willing to give it. A gem in the rough....have been making tweaks and repairs inside and out in order to bring her back to flight readiness. Thanks so much, Nik!!!! Closer to ready for more air time!

Final paint scheme will be a bit of a play on the traditional catalog scheme....though I do honestly like the orange and black. Anything beyond primer may have to wait until spring however, as we just got several inches of snow....winter in Wisconsin has begun!

Until next time...

Eric , that orange booster you have there has over 15 flights on it . It was the 3rd kit prototype built by Ron Schultz , the owned by Al Swakhammer , then Chuck Sackett , then myself. Until I picked it up from Chuck in 2007 , it was unflown . I'm glad to see its getting some more use.

Eric, that's awesome!!! That's a who's who of high power rocketry history right there! So you put 15+ flights on that bird...spectacular! Clusters, single motors, all of the above? I like history lessons!:)

You sold the red, white, blue one from Ron Schultz to Nik too, correct? Hey Nik, we going to see that one on the range in 2017?

Eric,

I kind of like the Rat Rod look!!

Hmmm, it's growing on me, Joe! By the way, picked up an Phoenix glider recently...on the build board this winter/spring.

Wow, you really earned that libation!

Thanks Tim! Agree...labor of love...hate....love. Just glad the mold is finally "done". On that note, pulled the first part from the mold last night!

Bazinga! Still need to trim the fuzzy edges.

Eric,
I don't have the red white and blue one. I scratched the booster from the orange one:)

I've been trying to talk Bob Brown into a drag race. How about it? MWP 2017? That should give you plenty of time to build it and me enough time to repair mine (again)!!

Bob Brown at MWP15?! I'll believe it when I see it...

I believe my sentence structure was misleading. That would probably be two separate drag races one at Airfest with Bob and myself and one at MWP with Eric and myself. Sorry...... Unless Eric goes to Kansas.

And more to the point of this thread...nice transition Eric!!

I will be at Airfest 2017...wife approved it. All else is cake!

Not to hijack your thread but Bob also has a friend who has built or is building one. It would be cool to see four of these in the air at once! I'll bet I can hitch a ride to Airfest next year.
