Here are a couple of pictures of mine. This is from an original EAC kit, which I won on eBay a few years ago, but only got around to building this summer. Decals are courtesy of Sandman / Excelsior.

I got both the kit and the decals from the same sources as you!

The Origonal and the Clone, can you guess which one is which?

I built the Viper when I was in middle school back in the late 70's. I joined the Estes model rocketry club and received the kit. I sure wish I had all of the paperwork that came with it. It has seen many launches, most using that green waterproof fuse that tended to start the fins burning before it would launch. So the fins were replaced with whatever happened to be around at the time, like that paint stir stick on the backside of the rocket.

The nicer of the two was completed a couple of years ago in BAR phase 2.5. the fins are basswood, and the nose cone was filled before it was painted. Just a slightly better finish on the rocket.

At one time, I had two Vipers. A 3 finned Ebay refugee and a clone. I flew the Ebay bird several times without any problems. The clone I slaved over turned out to be a one flight wonder.

Here is my 3x upscale. 3" diameter and 45" tall. It has a single 24mm motor mount, and a zipperless design with a triple baffle that breaks in the middle. I'm hoping I'll get to fly it for the first time at the LUNAR Snow Ranch launch this Saturday. Depending on the conditions, I'm thinking either a G53, G64, or G75 Black Jack.

Here's mine: Built with a BT-60 body - nose cone might be Quest.

I was going for a reptilian theme, but it came out looking more like Christmas wrapping :p

Oh well, it's still a great flyer.

Can't seem to find the plans/templates for this kit... Anybody got'em?

Thanks!
Jim

Thanks for the links T-Rex! Nice Upscale Capt'

I noticed that the fin templates don't give measurements, and I've learned from experience that RR's .rkt files aren't always the most accurate (Trust... But Verify). Anybody got some measurements on the fins that they could post? I'm thinking about cloning this.

Thanks!
Jim

First post on here so cut me some slack if my verbage isnt up to par, but hello from kansas city ,mo. I have only been building and playing around with rockets for about 8 yrs, my first was an old Estes Scorpion rocket that i built for a gf of mines son and i was hooked at that point. Ive had a son of my.own since then and we now enjoy time together building rockets, but I recently came across these two Viper EAC rocket kits that are complete with everything that was in the box when you bought one. I was debating on whether or not to break into one and put it together. I accidently stumbled across this thread and figured that i would share these two gems that I aquired, im definitely going to build one of these now and ill post the results when complete.

My Viper is finished pretty much like the "official" scheme (like most of mine) but I happen to like the design. I remember searching for just the right spray paints to match the decals.

My build is in the archive: https://www.rocketryforumarchive.com/showthread.php?t=47264

The albums are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/23694991@N03/collections/72157607429722392/

I know this is a 12 year old post, but does anyone have a lead on the yellow and purple paint colors to match the kit decals? This rocket looks spot-on to the original Viper. Thanks!

The EAC Viper was the very first rocket I ever built - back in '77 (circa). I was so proud of it, and flew it probably 15 times before it got stuck in a tree and was unrecoverable. I recently made a clone of it - pics attached - there are some areas near the front finlets that need "touching up" but otherwise it looks exactly like the one I built 40+ years ago. The things you can do with ink-jet printer waterslide decal paper and a scanner. Sometimes when I want to matchup the paint to the decal on clones like this, I will scan the decal and use PSP (or the equivalent) and change the color to match the paint I have. For the purple/pink, I used Krylon Fusion gloss "hot pink", and for the yellow I used Rust-oleum 2x gloss "golden sunset".
