Hi All:

Some close friends of mine gave me a Semroc SLS Laser-X kit at our last launch. :D

Great looking kit! Quality parts! Cool Design!

I've e-mailed Semroc but as of yet, have received no reply to a question I have about propulsion. I've also looked on EMRR and can't find an answer, either.

Has anyone who has this kit flown it on anything else other than SU motors? I'm thinking about necking it down from 29mm to 24mm with an adaptor, and flying it on 24mm Aerotech reloads. I'm thinking maybe the E18 would be a good choice. I usually build lighter than the manufacturer estimates. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Also, anyone have ideas on motor retention, other than friction fit for this kit?

Best Regards

I have flown mine on an E23-5 reload and the flight was fantastic. The 5 second delay seemed about right for deployment.

If you use an E18, what delay are you thinking of using? The 4 second seems a little short and 7 a little long. I would like this option as the 24mm reloads are a little cheaper.

I saw where someone made the motor mount with the tube sticking back a little from the "cooling fins" instead of flush so that a wrap of tape could be used around the rear of the motor in addition to the friction fit. I wish I had thought of that.

I was thinking about using a -7, and dialing it back to a 6 or a 5.

You're welcome!!

Darrell and I both have the 29/24 adapters that Semroc ships with the smaller SLS kits. Mine came with an SLS Javelin, Darrells came with an SLS Skyhook. If we put them in the rangeboxes, they'll be ready for you to use.

Just build it stock for 29mm and we'll take care of you. :)

Whatever you do, don't fly it on a RR G80! I watched a beautifully built model shred on its maiden flight. It looked like it 'bent over' at the transition and then completely came apart.

Way too much juice for that particular rocket. Not a fault of the rocket or anything, just a bad motor/rocket combo. The RR G80 is a great motor - but not for this kit.

It was a very nicely built and finished model, which made it all the harder to see. Not much survived.

I've built the smaller one and have an SLS on the 'to build' shelf. Both are great kits.

I've flown mine on Aerotech E18-4 and G64-7 with great flights. It's a really nice kit. I LOVE Semroc's stuff. Carl is a great guy too--he really treated my son and I well at last year's NARAM.
