Corona II update!

As with the MicroMaxx product line, we are actually getting closer on the Corona accessory, the Corona II booster!

A review and some details of this accessory can be found at EMRR here.

The documentation is complete with minor editing still needed. Material quotes have been received as well as samples for testing. The instructions have been tested and proto's built and flown and all looks good.

As soon as the materials have been ordered and a ship date received, I will post a pre-announcement with a scheduled release date.

So, keep watch for what has been described as the sexiest booster to ever hit the market! :)

I think I'm already setup to be the first direct order of the Corona-2, hehe.

But, shouldn't you already be working on the Corona-3 :D :D :kill:

Jim, I haven't built any multi-staged rockets yet, so I'm not intuiting specifics at this point.

I was just going through the EMRR review and noticed on the pics that the MMT in the main assembly did not have the motor clip. Is this an official change required for staging? Can the clip be left in the design and simply not engage (pushed aside) since two engines will be affixed together?

Are there any other changes to the basic kit construction required to use the Corona-2?

The motor hook isn't used in the 2 stage mode. I recommend cliping it off, if you have already assembled the kit, although I imagine that you *could* just not let it engage. That should work just fine, so long as the sprung hook doesn't interfere with the stage coupler.

The Corona II will be sold as an accessory to the Corona. It should be adaptable to *any* Corona (old and new) so you can upgrade your current Corona if you desire.

However, if your current Corona was not built well (eg: the tail ring is not straight or centered) then the Corona II booster stage will not assemble very well and may cause issues.

The new Corona comes with laser cut fins so a straight/centered tail ring is assured when assembled.

Yes, yes, yes.... but what about the Corona-THREE!?!?!

Hehe :kill:

Anyway, I know you're right, I've paused the construction of my Corona pending decisions about the Corona-2. I was making some adjustments to the kit as I went including "scratch build" techniques for correcting small fin inconsistencies during build, this was the first kit I had to cut my own fins by hand and they were less than great. If I'm going to add the Corona-2, I'll need to do twice as good as I did.

The baffle you created for the model...I'm inquisitive as to what it looks like, works, etc.

've read some mixed comments around the web regarding baffles. Some pretty detailed descriptions and examples, but when I've read logs of people actually flying with them, they often say they use wadding anyway "just to be safe'... which feels like a wast of effort since the wadding now comes free in almost every rocket engine purchase.

Tough to decide first time, may just have to to try one and see...

The baffle that you would use with the Corona is the BAF-50. click here for the BAF-50 details page

Since the Corona uses a coupler to join the two tubes, it is recommended (when you can) to add this baffle during the build and use it to replace the coupler provided in the kit.

As for a "Corona III", oh man... :p LOL I don't know 'bout that...

Really, man... Just imagine how big would that third stage ring have to be!? haha

JIM!!! Hurry up! I'm dying to build one of these! You got me all worked up with Lance's review on EMRR....AND THEN YOU TEASE ME BY NOT RELEASING IT!!!

Okay...I'm sorry...I'll be patient!:D

I've been hesitant to start my Corona I purchased at NERFF until the C2 is released. (Yes, I know that the Corona needs to dry before starting C2) I'm starting to think that using this C2 tease tactic Jim hypnotised me into purchasing a Deuces Wild which I am currently into...Love that motor mount!:D

here comes the weekend!

Wow. What an awesome idea. I'm now looking at some of my existing rockets for idea's on how to stage them :)

Nice work Jim!

I hope to be able to report in the next few days that the tubes have been ordered. Right after that happens, we order the fins and documentation. Then it is just a matter of time (short) before we can announce :)

jim

Its possible to stage with motor hooks installed. Not sure how the Corona stages, but if its the scotch tape two motors together method, then simply have enough gap between the two for the hook to fit, and cut a slot for the hook. Thats how I have done when adding a booster to a rocket originally not designed to be staged :D

It's possible, but there are reliability issues. When you tape the motors together in a traditional staged model, the motors are meant to be butted against each other. This allows the heat and burning particles to get up into the nozzle before the tape seal breaks.

If you have a gap caused by the hook, hot gasses will get to the tape much quicker causing it to break away. Will this be *too* quick? I don't know...

Also, with the motors butted together, there is greater stability between the motors. With a hook between them, the motors could move a bit (not sure if they would seeing as they are in motor tubes, but...)

If you want to keep the hook in place, what I would recommend is that you butt the motors together and tape as you normally would. Then insert them, leaving the hook sprung and pressing against the tape seam.

fwiw :)

Jim,

Any update on when you can announce the booster stage of the Corona?

(Like you're not busy enough already...:D )

:) Quite frankly, as soon as our past due invoices get paid we'll be able to order the materials...

As soon as we order the material and receive a ship date, I will announce. We truely are in a wait state. The documents are all done, we just need to order tubes, fins and such....

I hope to have some more information before the end of the week, keep watch :)

UPDATE!

The Corona-2 booster has been pre-announced on our web site. It is not *yet* available but now we at least know *when* it will be available.

Unfortunately we were unable to bring this in in time for the holidays, but we tried... :)

We are currently looking at a release date near the beginning/middle of January. Sooner depending on when the tubes come in (they've been ordered).

kewl :)
Have fun!

The Corona 2 booster is now available for Pre-Orders!

It has been a very hectic holiday season, but we managed to pull it together and get the Corona 2 Booster ready for release. So close that we are now willing to accept pre-orders.

All materials are expected to arrive by Wednesday of next week and we hope to be shipping by weeks end or early the following week. As soon as I have more information I will post it.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask :)

NOTE: See restrictions related to Pre-Order items by visiting our Ordering page.

Ordered one... waiting... tap .... tap... tap...

Question though, on the Fliskits site it mentions a D10-5 as a recommended motor. I think this is from Apogee but I do not see it on their site for ordering. A look at the NAR site states the general certification expired on 12/31/05.

Thanks,
Homer Out

ohh, thanx for that information. I will update that. Also, such a motor would NOT be recommended in the 2-stage setup anyway.

I sent an email to everyone who has ordered a Corona-2 or combo about a status (last night), so you should have gotten one. If you would, please send me an email and I will verify that you are on that list...

*As* for that status, we confirmed that the last missing part (the BT101 tail ring) has shipped and we should have it early next week. Every thing else is in, including the instructions, so we're nearly ready to start kitting.

As soon as the parts arrive I will post another status and update the web site.

As soon as they begin shipping I will let everyone know :)

Jim,
I know that I'm sure interested in the new booster.Just so happens I have one of your Coronas going together now. However,I will only be ready to order when I can also order some of the new BT-3's,too.I will assume they are Estes size.I need them for the fake engines on the Dragonship 7 and the Space Cruiser Excalibur that I'm about to start on.Any word on their status?

They have been ordered but we have not received a status on that order. I would expect them in about 3 weeks and will keep everyone posted.
