1/110 Scale Shuttle model is a success!

Time to start on a 29mm version, George.
Hey, if you want a shuttle that uses a 29mm mount, here you go:

And, unlike the 1/110 kit, you can buy that one by the end of next Sunday night!

Actually, I fear that when the 1/110 shuttle kit comes out, someone will “upgrade” it by putting a 29mm mount in it. Using some unsuitable 29mm motor in it (F50, G80....), and maybe not bother to add the extra noseweight it would take to keep the CG correct.

Anyway, there is still a long way to go to turn this one into a kit.

I had one of the NCR kits. Couldn't bring myself to build it. So I sold it. Hope you get a ton of money from the auction.

Does anyone know of a 1/100th, true to scale orbiter that actually glides? Every 1/100th orbiter I see that can actually glide either lacks detail, has over sized wings, a smaller fuselage, or all of the above. Any help here would be appreciated.

all you need now is a chute that deploys from the shuttle just before landing :).

its only been a day since you asked...some folks don't check the board that often :). I'd give it at least a week before considering this to be a dead issue. though I suspect that some allowences need to be made in order to have a re-usable shuttle. bear in mind that the full scale shuttle lands at around 200mph and generally has a glide ratio of a brick...:).

I know a scale orbiter will glide. Ive used an old estes with foam wings. I tried to thicken up the airfoil as per the real thing but it seems to like more of a flat plate? There is a huge boost in performance if you up the wingarea a bit. If its light enough it will glide fine with scale wingarea. lw

ah, I see that you are familar w/ shuttle glide characteristics :). whood a thunk that we would have r/c rockets (during boost) learn something new :).

It's close in the wing area. But slightly oversized.
No detail either. Body is thinner than scale.
Good luck Bobby Wood....

Did this kit ever make it to market ?last post was a few years back . If not then Is there a plan out there somewhere showing me which parts to buy and who from to build this version of a shuttle model ? I have seen 3 sources for a 3" body tube , estes, totally tubular, and apogee . Which one would be best to go with what lengths of tubes ? Are there any sources for all nose cones tail cones, srb ends ? I know of BMS, but I was hoping for an off the shelf option . Is there any recommendation for the wrap on the External tank ?

I would LOVE to have a 1/100th scale shuttle stack, or close to that scale, and would pay good money to get one that I could build. The more detailed the better, but should be flyable.

I just ordered one of those foam shuttle orbiters off Amazon, and with Amazon prime that my wife signed up for to do her Xmas shopping I got free shipping. Sweet.

Now if only they had the 5 minute Amazon Rocket delivery in place already that would really be awesome to watch!

Dangit. It arrived with a broken wing.

Edit, Dec 30th, a replacement arrived in great condition. Now to break out the sharpies to try and give the all white Styrofoam shuttle the correct markings.

Sorry, I've been away from posting to TRF for over a month, I'll mention it in the Watering Hole later.

Unfortunately, the shuttle kit never happened. Various reasons.

I am including a "full size drawing", of the model at 1/110 scale, with many dimensions.

The ET was a 3" tube from BMS. SRB's, BT-55.

I think I documented the rest of it well enough in previous messages.

Thank you very much George. I really appreciate the advice that you've given in this thread. I have made a picture of what I understand your instructions to be, I would appreciate it if you could have a look and see if I understand your instructions correctly.

My cloning process is going along just fine, I was so proud of how these srb nose cone came out on my CNC mill that I thought that I would share a pic of them. I am going with the Estes 1467 orbiter instead of the guillows, and also went with the Estes pro series 3 inch tube, so that I could get free shipping on my holiday special order. Now I have to wait a couple more days for some more balsa from amazon so that I can machine the nose and tail cones.

Just in case anyone might be interested , off course also because I'm bragging here is my ET nose and tail cones.IMG_20140120_115315.jpg

The shuttle model is Estes 1467, I'm going with that instead of guillows, they are approximately the same size. I have not joined uroc , I visited the site but I can't see any justification of spending almost the price of joining nar for joining uroc. In the background I'm cloning a 1/100 Saturn 1b , and a paper model conversion of a little note 2. I've only been a bar for a few months now.

Thanks for all the info on the Space Shuttle scratch build. I'm gonna have to revisit this post when I have some more time. Lots of good info.

I have 1/100 scale highly detailed resin orbiters for sale on ebay.
Great for building your own stack or booster rocket. Check em out at ebay. Type in gliding space shuttle. Thanks ron

How did you construct the orbiter? I'm just curious how you got it to look so good.
