I have been looking for a replacement for Krylon since they changed there formula eliminating the re-coat any time feature. I found this Rust-Oleum product the last time I was at the Wal-Mall. So I picked up a few cans and a couple of Estes kits out of the toy dept.

NOTE: The High Build Primer is in the automotive section. The Specialty Lacquer is with the rest of the rattle cans in the paint dept.

First I built both kits according to the instructions using Elmer's glue and then filled the tube groove, wood grain, and other imperfections with Elmer's Wood Filler. I wipe it on, then wet my finger and smooth it out.

After that dried I sprayed a couple of coats of the high build primer let it dry over night and hand sanded with 380 grit 3M sand paper. The I filled any imperfections with the wood filler. I sprayed another couple of coats of primer and sanded again.

I sprayed three coats of the lacquer recoating after 30 minutes or so. I let each individual color coat dry over night. The base coat was solid white on the multi colored Taser Twin.

I was very please with the results. As you can see in the attached pictures it leaves a very smooth glossy finish. I am going to spray a couple of coats of the clear Specialty Lacquer once I finish with the decals. I'll post pictures when I finish. :)

Overall this is a good inexpensive product that drys fast and provides the ability to recoat anytime. The only drawback is color selection. I could only find White, Black, Red, and Clear. I still prefer the Duplicolor automotive spray cans but there more expensive and are harder to find. The Rust O' Lacquer will fill a void that was left by Krylon and I am glad to see it works as advertised.

I agree, the Rustoleum filler primer is the best primer I have found so far. The only thing I have used it for so far was to build up primer on a nose cone. It took a couple days to do and less than one can, it took me over 5 cans of Kilz primer to do the same job.

The plastic primer is nice to, you can't recoat it for a week, but it holds on to plastic nose cones!

There, I got the decals on the Taser Twin. I am glad to see Estes went back to the water slide decals and the balsa nose cone. I could do with out the rubber band shock cord but I will replace those with Kevlar.

I've had really good luck with Rustoleum paints in the past; I actually prefer them over Krylon.

For Duplicolor, I can find it at chain auto parts stores here in the Omaha area.

Although I have not yet used the Rust-Oleum Primer (will have to try it) I have used the Black ,White & Red Specialty Lacquer on my 4" IRIS project and am more than pleased.I have always been a fan of lacquer, and this fits the bill.I also clear coated using their lacquer clear cote as well as MinWax Clear Aerosol Lacquer and they performed flawlessly !

3 cheers for LACQUER.

NOTE: The Primer has a large spray button and was hard to press. I got cramps in both my fingers spraying with it. It sprayed well covering in two coats. One of those can holders with the trigger would come in handy if they will fit that can with the large button.

That`s the only gripe I have about this paint ,it does not have the adjustable (horizontal/vertical) spray button. But hey...it`s lacquer.

That is definitely a reason to spend the extra $$ on Duplicolor. :D

I do use Duplicolor filler primer all the time ,great stuff.

And yes ,I do hope Rust-Oleum comes out with more colors in their lacquer range.

I've had great luck with the Rustoleum lacquer paints. They cover really well. Only problem is that they only have black, white, red, and clear coat available in that series.

Rustoleum has a lot of new primer products out there. They have 5 or 6 types that are very similar to each other. I read the cans at the store and couldn't even distinguish the difference between the different types.

That may be different labels for the same product. I know of two different Rust-Oleum primers. The regular and the filler or high build. Oops I stand corrected. I just looked at there website. They do have about 6 different primer products.

Just for kicks, I checked out their website and they have,

Automotive primer
Rusty Metal Primer
Filler Primer
Sandable Primer
Primer Sealer
Self Etching Primer
High Heat Primer
Engine Primer
Clean Metal Primer

Their automotive series of primers are very thick and have a lot of filler in them. Great for spirals.

Funny, this discussion came up last year over on YORF. I too am a huge fan of these lacquers. I even emailed Rustoleum, telling them about all the buzz over their products, but the color choice is limited. I asked them for blue and silver, please!

Note: I've tested the little Model Masters and Testors lacquer sprays, and they are fine with Rustoleum. Although more expensive, they give you some choices to combine with the basic black and white Rustoleums. I do think the Rustoleum red is one of the great colors available, maybe only second to Italian Red (model Masters or Testors, I cannot remember which ...)

BTW -- Hobby Lobby sells Rustoleum lacquers, so the $4.99 can with a 40% coupon is just $3.00. We have two here, so I print 2 coupons, and shop at each. If I cannot find a rocket I want (often), I buy paint.

Indeed ,I`ve mixed Testors spray bombs (both lacquer and enamel) with Rust-Oleum and have not had issues.Of course ,I`m masking so the lacquer product is not going over the enamel...ALTHOUGH...I do clearcoat with lacquer over enamel without problems ,just many light coats without saturation.

VIVA LOS LACQUERS !

Paul

PS- no hobbylobby up here in Canada ,but I buy my Rust-Oleum lacquer products in the US ,which is only a 2 hour drive (GrandForks North Dakota) Price is about half ,and with the strong Cdn. dollar ,it`s a good deal.Going for a big paint and CTI re-load run in May !
