that looks at everything and wonders if it could be used on,for, in,ect a rocket? I work at Dartmouth College. I was working over at the med center in thier store room. Well, they had more things-funnels,plastic tubes, tips, tops, all kinds of things that one could use in rocketry. I look at bottle tops in stores to use as bowtails,NCs. I look at labels on glass bottles for decals. i mean this could turn into a Dr phil show if it keeps going. Am I nuts?:confused2: :y:  :y: Scotty Dog

Welcome to the fine line between passion and obsession... :D It's fun here...

Nope, your not nuts. I do it all the time. Walking thru a store saying
"I wonder how much that weighs?" or "Could I use that for my next project?" etc. But you know your going over the deep end when you drive past a farm and see the farmers silo and you start wondering.

Welcome...
You are one of us now...

Seldom do I look over the Christmas, Halloween or Easter seasonal section, or cola isle, or hardware store, or toy isle, bathroom counter top or about anywhere else without seeing potential rocket parts.

Everybody now!

Went grocery shopping last week. Got some oatmeal. Stared at the tube for 10 minutes trying to figure out what size fins I'd have to put on it.

My wife gently took it out of my hands, put it back on the shelf, and said "wrong brand, dear.", then grabbed a box of this instant stuff that she likes.

I picked the tube back up, and got THE STARE. I knew I was beaten.

This week, I go alone.

:D

I have a friend who's well known for making rockets out of odd materials.

I'm tempted to give him an old toilet and make it fly.

My concern?

He will. :y:

Guess I am the lucky one....
My Trudy is always saving all manner of things: pill bottles, odd shaped containers and even the little throw-away caps on stick deodorant.
My BayBay is the Greatest!

when i go shopping i often try to work out if the tubing used for packaging can be used, Easter is really bad, those eggs can out to be made into nosecones.

Yes, I save all sorts of stuff... It is a disease!

1lb salt container (airframe)
I have a fit when my wife throws out her hand cream pump bottle without removing the plastic tube inside. (launch lug)
The cardboard tube from my old window shades. (airframe)
The cardboard tube from rolled printer paper (Engine holder/blocks)
Blocks of styrofoam used for furniture packing (Nose Cones)
Dress shirt cardboard (fins)
Dress shirt pins (jig for hold in balsa in place)

and 1000 other things......

Man, youse guys are so "soft core".....

geeze....

:D

You walk into a store and you see things and wonder how you could use that item as a rocket part in some design....

I'm "HARD core"... I walk into a store and I am amazed at all of the novel uses for all these nifty rocket parts...

Subtle, but important difference.

Soft Core: That egg capsule the nylons come it would make a great nose cone!

Hard Core: Oh, look! They package nylons in nose cones now!

.....
:D

Well, my shrink will be happy. She told me I needed to join a group of the same peers and be part of sociaty. She also ask me what I thought it meant to"Think outside the box". I thought for a moment and then explained it in two words;"What Box"? :bangbang: Scotty Dog

This threads pretty funny lol, I was behind a bus the other day and the muffler was sticking out the back, I said to myself that looks like a 5" airframe lol. I also constantly see license plates like M1297W K550 etc.:D

And I thought I was cRaZy thinkin' those thoughts! I'm just as looney as the rest of you! :y:
It must be a N.H. thing,lol:D
jflis,scottydog, I'm in good company.

Really? What was the "dry" weight?

Actually, I was changing out a roll of TP on the fly and wondered if anyone has created a fleet from the spent tubes.
There really wasn't much else to ponder at the time.

And we'll have flush in 5.. 4.. 3..

Aw thanks for the cudo's Layne babay!
I walk into hardware stores and other places all the time wondering how or if I could turn it into something appropriate for my Medieval (eg SCA.org) reenactment; so this is a cross hobbies disease.

My son once told me that Michealangelo could look at stone and see the sculpture that was trapped inside, He then added that I looked at everything, and saw a rocket that was trapped inside.

Gotta a lotta stuff like that from the $ store, finding time to do stuff with it is another story. The plastic wine goblets have great potential for nose cones. Saw off the stem and grind smooth. I had not considered them for a boat tail.
Hmmm

:D

I got about a half dozen Gluden's Mustard Jars that are gonna get turned into engine bells, they are a might on the heavy side thought. I have a whole box of stuff like that. when I was a kid I had a box at the end of the bed full of tooth picks paper all kinds of stuff that I'd build little models out of. It took a couple of years for my older sister to let go of the lander she sat where the tooth picks drew blood.

The funny thing is, I walk through stores looking for stuff to use for rocketry, and I can never find anything. Guess I am not an odd-rocketeer...
:confused2:
