So my active duty Air Force wife got her orders this week, heading to Edwards AFB.

This is home turf for me, I grew up in Orange County (back when there were orange groves) and worked at Edwards AFB for 13 years before I became an Air Force "wife"... :p

What is new for me is that when I left CA I was a low power, lone ranger type. As a kid we just went up to the local school to launch, and as a grown up with my kids we just drove out of town to the nearest BLM land and did our thing. Now as a high power flyer I guess I need to get smart on all the silly extra CA restrictions/regulations to stay out of trouble.

Of course it helps that there are a couple of big active clubs nearby...

The only down side is that we won't be hitting the road until the last week of June so I'll miss my chance at LDRS. The up side of course is that I'll be able to go to Souther Thunder one more time...

Back to the land of Fruits and Nuts... :D

Launches in the LA Basin are held at the Santa Fe Dam. See SCRA website for full details and dates.

By the time you move out here, the Ren-Fair will be gone from the Santa Fe Dam and we will resume using our normal spot in the park and our normal G motor limit will be back.

If you want to launch on your own, there is information on the Links page (Get Your Own Launch Site).

If you want to launch with another club, there are links to other local clubs on the Links page.

We had a very long launch on Sunday at Lucerne Dry Lake because there was no wind at all from before dawn until around noon, and then it was more of a breeze that petered out by 2 pm.

Ah yes the high desert "breeze"... I remember it well.

Spent some time last night poking around the SCRA website, it's funny I've driven past Lucerne hundreds of times, never knew anyone launched there until after I moved away. We used to go launch on El Mirage Dry Lake a lot.

Looking forward to it... :D

Yes, El Mirage is used and will be closer to you. I've driven near it (on the way to and from EAFB), but never visited it or launched there. Reports from others indicate that the AHJ is a Park Ranger located at a ranger station and they are the ones you check in with for permission to launch Model Rockets. HRP, obvioously, would require formal permits and a licensed individual and obtaining the FAA waiver so close to EAFB may be an issue.
