I remember as a kid reading the latest "Haunted Tank" and drooling over those cool looking adverts for toy soldier sets like the 132 Roman soldiers set. Never got one because frankly the comics were borrowed and the money wasnt there but I remember as a lad really thinking how cool it would be to have a set. Well here they are and some neat background as well:) Some things just bring back the feeling of a warm summer sun on your face as you sat under a tree reading a great comic :)

Very Interesting:
Have to admit while these ads were very enticing they seemed to good to be ture for my buck a week allowance which was always much better spent on Model Car Kits and parts at the time:)
I remember having bags of these little green and tan army men (like those in Toy Story) that "the gang" set up war games with in the dirt and sand piles of the family back yard. Tiny army tanks, jeeps and trucks were also pickup up in cereal boxes and from the toy shops hanger racks really cheap.
Wow Fred...haven't thought about such things in eons LOL!!!!

I just loved comics when I was a kid:) I remember those adverts for gods know what reason but I still smile when I think about them. Turns out the sets were not quite what they seemed so your instinct about them was good John:)

Although I never ordered any of those from the comics, I do dabble ( very lightly, lol ) into toy soldier collecting - and have a few of these 'flatsies' .

not near as cool as the vintage Marx playsets, but wow, 132 for a buck :)

Oh Gosh! How I lusted over those Roman and Revolutionary War soldier sets......then the AGONY of Defeat......LOL!

I ordered one of these flat civil war sets. The excitement and anticipation was all as described in the article. So was the realization as to the lack of quality. I loved it though for as long as it lasted.

I got the money together to order one more, Heroes of the Alamo set. I ordered it but it never arrived.

Bummer. I never seen one of those sets except for the adverts till I found this website. Not quite as I imagined :)
