Room design ideas

Hey y'all! I haven't been around here much in the last year or so. Changed jobs, got married, moved into her house. Which leads me to my question....

I've successfully commandeered an entire corner of the basement for use as my personal escape zone. I have a basic layout designed but I need to solicit your ideas for the things I didn't think of.

So I have two main requests -

1 - Pictures of the spaces where you folks do your building. Preferably from when the space was still clean and you could actually see the desktop.

2 - More awesome ideas like this one:

I remember someone on here posting pictures of the fancy hobby room they had just built, but it was on the old TRF and I don't remember who posted it.

I don't have any pictures, and I don't have anything resembling an optimum workspace, but I do have a few recommendations.

Bench vise. Holds anything for cutting, or even a drill if you need the rotation for something.

Glass-topped desk. Resistant to almost anything and easy to keep clean.

Good ventilation for using epoxy, and good vacuuming systems.

Light. More light than you think you need.

A large trash can, situated so that you can push scraps into it without it falling on the floor.

At least two double outlets.

Plenty of storage space. Bins for parts and spikes and cradles for completed rockets.


Question: what size of rockets will you be working on in the room?

All good ideas - thanks. Rockets are primarily mid-power and smaller.

The room is not just dedicated to rocketry. I've got two desks in the design now, one for my PC and typical "officey" kinda stuff, and a "hobby desk" for everything from building rockets to tying trout flies and tweaking rifle triggers and such. So the hobby desk/area needs to be uber-organized so I can switch between hobbies as fast as my ADD can say "oooh! something shiny!" There's room for lots of those semi-transparent plastic storage boxes for half-finished projects.

Here's my man cave that can easily be adapted to any hobby, rocketry or r/c.

I mounted 1"x2" along the stud lines as a frame, than laid pegboard on top. Finally I found a nice frame to finish it off on both walls.

I went inexpensive on furniture and bought almost everything at Ikea. I can airbrush and finish on one table/wall and build on the other side. As far as tools, much of my equipment, table size 'workmate', vise, drill press, etc. are Dremel products that I've acquired over time.

The final trick is not to spend so much time in your man cave, that your wife doesn't complain when you're in there.

My workshop overall probably doesn't apply to you because it is a large dedicated space so I wasn't going to answer, but there's one idea I implemented that may help you...

Even though I have a big workshop, I wanted to save space and be efficient. So for my parts bins instead of taking up 20+ feet of wall space I designed narrow drawer units that were installed in the bottom space of a standard heavy duty utility shelf you get at Lowes or Home Depot. The parts bins, drawer slides and bottom wheel were purchased at Harbor Freight, the lumber at Lowes. I attached a picture of the overall workshop so you could see the "before" location where the red/blue bin packages are to the middle left in the picture. And the of course a couple of "after" snapshots of the finished design now in use.

Well, I went for the throat and refitted my basement for my needs:

Every shop needs a warning sign

Then a work bench (this was right after it as built)

And some storage under the bench.
These are drawers for tubes and the like

Non Power Tool Storage

The glue cart

A place to dress your rockets up before you hang them in a tree.

Gotta have a place to do the cleanups

And a place for your Dremel tools (the Dremel-Matic 6000)

Up close and candidate for the best misuse of an IV stand

Oh yes, a place to conceptualize ne and exciting rocket designs.

H_Rocket, SWEET WORKSHOP!

I have a sink right beside the fridge in mine which is very convenient, but I really envy the bathroom. In my set up I have to run down the stairs into the basement through three doors (tough to do with epoxy all over your gloves) as my wife won't let me in the house when I'm building (for good reason I might add).

Troy's room is nice, been in it before. I get a coffee table in the office since the dinning room is no longer a toddler free area. but the place we are in now came with a bunch of cabinets in the laundry room which make great storage space. Don't underestimate the storage area like light make sure you have more than you need.

As I get older I find it more and more important to keep the building area close to the rest room!
