Ladies and gentlemen. I have something very special to share with you.

An estes mosquito, flown and recovered TWICE in one day. That's gotta be some kind of record right?

No damage except for some nice chars on the fins.

Not even painted a really bright color!

No not a record but a good feat anyway LOL!!! Great looking mosquito by the way!

Back in the late 80's My BSA Scout troop used to hold a Mosquito Launch once a year usually in mid June where we all built and flew as many mosquitos as possible in one day. We flew them on 1/4A to A10's. Some of the Scouts painted their mosquitos in camouflage colors as they didn't think they'ed get them back. We are very surprised at the number we actually tracked and recovered:) Without checking the logs I seem to recall the greatest number of mosquitos launch by our 18 scout Troop was 140+.
Several were flown as many as 8 or 9 times on A10's only to be brought back for another flight.

These days most of mine have been converted to Micro Maxx rear ejection pod motor mounts so I haven't lost a one:D

my mosquetos and my quark have flown a10's and have not been lost yet. though i did have it stuck in a tree once hehehehe.

I have no experience with micro maxx but that sounds like a good idea if you're familiar with the workings of it. I did something a little different to ensure I get the mosquito back every time. I have mentioned it on here before but for anyone who hasn't seen it it's worth repeating. I cut out 3 one-half inch wide by 6 inch long mylar strips and tape them to the bottom of each fin. This creates enough drag to slow down the rocket and keep it fairly low altitude making for a pretty cool looking flight, especially when the motor kicks at ejection. I get it back every time and it's a real crowd pleaser!

What'd you fly it on?

First on a 1/4A 3 then on an A 10

Awesome! Another mosquito fanatic!

I really worked for the paint job.

I might have to try a micro maxx mount some time.

what do you use for the motor tube?

UPscaler, your post put the first smile on my face for the day.
Thank you,

wick

my winter projected is all about the mosquito, so far i've done 3 upscales, an actual mosquito and a downscale for mmx. In the past i have flown and lost mosquitos, i reckon the best way to get one back is the 4 inch diameter one that i'm building!

I always taped some light fishing line to my mosquito and then just pulled on the line for recovery!

I have plans ready for a 4 inch upscale too!

Standard T2+ (.281") diameter craft Tubing from Totally Tubular, BMS, Fliskits, and now Quest is offering their own Micro Maxx parts line as well.
I generally cut my Micro Motor mount tubes at 1" long. Fliskits also has laser cut centering rings from T2+ to BT-5, I don't recall the product number but they are Great fitting parts:)

Man thats awesome yougetting it back twice. I often wonder if a special plant or tree grows where the thousands of these things have landed:)
Cheers

Cool! thanks! Oh yeah, do micro maxx motors have to use there specific igniters? Or is there a different igniter you can use for them?

haven't seen any trees lately :( If that were the case, we wouldn't have any problems with deforestation!

The older micromaxx motors had igniters encased in plastic that would only work well with the Quest micromaxx launch setup. There are methods of taking them apart to make them easier to use with other setups (as called out in our kit instructions).

The new motors come with the Quest Un-Dipped Q2 igniters which are fantastic and easy to use.

The problem with the micro motors is that the nozzle is so small you aren't going to get much in there (like an igniter with pyrogen, for example...)

hope this helps!

Plain Old 30ga Nichrome is the preferred igniter for Micros. in a pinch you CAN use 1 leg from a spent Estes igniter simply folded in half.

Personally I purchased a 1/4lb roll of 30ga nichrome for McMaster-Carr to make my own igniters from 1-1/2" pieces for use with standard 1-1/4" smooth jaw micro clips. I think they end up costing almost less then nothing LOL! and work wonderfully on any 12V launch system. This is my everyday stand alone micro launcher base and some of the various igniters. for single motor flights I'll take the 30ga nichromes over every other type, hands down.

I flew one once. Spent a lot of time giving it a nice white and blue paint job also. It went up...up...and away never to be seen again.

The Mosquito was mine & my brother's first rockets that we built from kits back in the mid 80's. It was all we could afford (I think they were only like 1.00 a kit) and we lost most of them on the first launch. I think it had to do with painting them like on the packaging card...gloss white with 1 black fin I believe. Those little rockets bring back memories even though we were surrounded by rocket eating trees.

P.S. 1st post!:D

The red and yellow was on the packaging as well. Though it is a bad idea to paint them that way, I just love how they look

Welcome to the forums!

The mosquito that i just built had a yellow and black paint pic on the front, i've painted the 5 mosquitos (up and downscales) with the yellow yesterday, putting the black on today.

Ah yes the yellow and black paint job. I think the one I have "in the works" will be painted with that design. This one will fly on MMX motors and have a rear ejection setup, like the one micromeister posted above.
