This is my Semroc Iris that I just finished.
The hardest part of the build was the masking for the paint.
As usual a great kit from Semroc.

Great looking rocket.

Next time take some step by step pics and show us how you did it.

Inquiring minds want to know! Every little tip helps.

Beautiful rocket. What sort of stand do you have it stuck on? I'd be curious how to build something similar.

Very nice indeed !! The Iris has always been one of my favorite rockets (well it and a hundred others)
I think it`s that particular paint scheme....very sleek and eye catching.I`m actually getting the parts together to do a 4" version ,just need to go out tomorrow and buy some 1/4 " Baltic ply for the fins.

Again.....great job !

Paul

Ah Tony, once again you buy a rocket I have in the bag waiting to be built and throw down the gauntlet to try to match an almost impossibly good finish...now I have to work on mine. I can't keep up with you!

Mine's sitting here waiting for it to warm up enough to primer. The parts were some of the best for a model to ever come out of a kit. The nose cone is absolutly gorgeous, perfectly porportional to scale, not just a close approxamation.

I did, however make 1 slight mod, I put the launch lugs on 1/16th inch risers. There are two paper bands that I think might cause a bind in the rod so I did that to give the launch rod more clearance but that's the only non-stock mod I did.

I'll be getting more SEMROC rockets in the future, I'm still holding out for a 1/10th scale Argo D-4 Javelin(hint hint hint):hohoho:

Very nice! Also one of my all time favorites.

How did you do the silver?

Greg

Thanks everyone. :)

nice rocket, great finish, now you've got to fly it.
We have a launch on Jan 9th, I plan to fly it then.

It's just a spent motor casing glued to some 1/8 inch card stock.

It's Krylon Silver with a coat of Future.

Thanks Dan.

And when you finish yours we can have a drag race.
I also know yours will look great too. :)

Well... I'm not too good at taking picture while I build.
My best tip is Tamiya masking tape. This stuff is the best. :)

I found a Aluminum spray can at KMart. It's Dutch Boy paint and WOW does it look good. I used it on a Peter Alway ARCAS. Drys fast and not sticky in any way. Just get the Dutch Boy Primer to go with it, let it dry for at least a day then go at it with the Aluminum paint.

It's really shiney:D

That is an amazing finish. Beautiful rocket all the way around.

That is what I always strive for, but seem to fall a bit short.

Questions on this kit :

1) Is the black decal on a white background or clear?

2) What are the measurements for the roll pattern?

Tony,

Great looking rocket and another excellent finishing job.

I should just code up a macro that says "Great looking rocket, Tony" so I can open up one of your threads, hit the macro and submit.

Did you do all the painting after the rocket was assembled? The fins and the silver section around the bottom seem to be perfect.

Thanks everyone from the great compliments. :)

The Iris decal has a clear back round and the lower decal has black around the white type.
The center of the roll pattern is equal distance from the top of the tube to the lower bands (silver).
Excellent work!
Please post some launch pix when you can......
I sure will. Will be launching it on Jan 9th at the CMASS Winter Follies. :)

I painted this one after. The silver area was easy. It was the root edge of the fins that was the tricky part.

The silver band goes up to the first wrap? I'm assuming that the lower decals aren't quite big enough to actually be the lower roll pattern, are they?

I also have the Estes version of this in my build pile...

Yes the silver butts up against the lower bands. The roll pattern is painted with the decals on top. Each section of the roll pattern is 7 1/2 inches.

I have the Estes one too. I don't remember the last time I flew it.
The Semroc Iris has much more detail and the nose cone is the right shape.

Thats a LONG nose cone.

I love finishing balsa nose cones so they look like plastic...I don't like it when they get dinged, which several of mine have. This one looks to be a prime candidate for damage...ideas?

I don't do anything special just coat with CA, sand, Fill n Finish and sand. If it's a big NC I'll coat with finishing epoxy. They can still get dinged up but what can you do.
Beautiful rocket, Tony.
Thanks Steve.

Flew the Iris today. :)
It was a cold breezy day with clear skies.
Used a B6-4. Flew great. A little weather cocking but not bad.

My son got one of these at NARAM 51. He didn't have the patience to paint it. He just built it in a day or so and flew it for the rest of the week.

It's a great flyer.

Tony, you did it again! Beautiful rocket. I may have to try that Krylon silver with Future. Looks good. Remember, lots of bubble wrap around it, I do not want the US postal service messing it up when you sent it to me... :D
