Absolutely beautiful work on the nose cone, thanks for documenting that. Also glad you and paint have called a truce - your paint is looking mighty fine as well!

Are you gonna make a little goony-scaled Patriot battery?

I am just thrilled with this nose cone! I still can't get over how well it turned out. It's hard to believe that rough chunk of wood evolved into this near perfect nose cone.

WOW!!!!!!!!!That came out great Jim,I knew you would have no problem. And your paint is perfect.Your the Man!

I was so encouraged by my nose cone success yesterday, I decided to turn a second one. This time a more ogive shape.

Hey Jim.....you going into business LOL

I`m actually drooling at your pictures ,and checking my bank account to see if a lathe is in my future.

It is ,this Christmas me thinks

Lovely work ,absolutely lovely :handshake:

I did all of the final shaping with 60 grit. I really like that 3M Pro sandpaper. It cuts fast and doesn't hardly clog.

Wow, I'm two for two! Now I have to decide which shape I like better for the Patriot goony. And decide what to build for whichever nose cone I don't use for this rocket. Decisions decisions!

Me too! Still lousy weather for painting (and besides, there was a club launch today), so you've pulled into the lead.

Well, I'm not in the winner's circle yet. I still have to mask and paint the rocket. And we all know that can go badly very easily.

Thank you! A goony battery would be very cool, but I still have too many rockets to finish.

It was your idea, Carl. I wouldn't have attempted it without your encouragement!

WOW! That's gorgeous!!

Thanks Krusty!

I don't know, Paul, I think you need a lathe before Christmas. YOU will do amazing things with it! Do you have a particular lathe in mind?

Not really ,was going to get opinions on that.

Since I have a US postal address ,ordering from the States (that`s what we call the USA) is not a problem ,as it`s only 50 minutes away from my home. The place I get things delivered to is an aircraft hanger ,so they accept anything their forklift can carry

All i really want is a bench top model ,16" center to center and able to do up to 6" diameter ,110 volts at least 1/3 HP

Nice nose cone really knocked it out of the park! Are you going to drill it out to lighten it up or for DD, not that a squat rocket could use a bit of nose weight.

I have to say I like the second one the best for the Patriot, man I need a lathe again.

Great lathe skills Jim. I wouldn't be surprised if you get flooded with requests for custom NC's. You do first rate work.

I highly recommend thinking about a bigger lathe. You'll need it eventually. And 1/3HP isn't nearly enough. I had a 1/3HP mini lathe years ago, and it barely had enough power to turn a pen. When you say "6 inch diameter", what do you plan on turning? If you're thinking about 6" wood nose cones, I'd try to get at least 1HP. But, if a mini lathe is what you want, I'd look at the Rikon. It will turn 16" between centers, and is 1/2HP. The Jet Mini is very popular, but it's only 14" between centers, and is more expensive.

A step up would be the Jet Midi. It's 21" between centers and 1HP. It's a really nice lathe. But whatever you decide on, I can't wait to see what you create with it!

Thank you! It only weighs 7oz, but I think I have another goony in mind for it.

Thank you, Bill. I'm going to attribute it more to luck than skill. I'm really not an experienced turner, other than pens.

Jim ,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions !

Yes indeed ,I thought 1/3 HP would be a little underpowered ***noted ***

I would be turning wood ,most likely Basswood ,Balsa and perhaps spruce/pine /fir.

You know ,14" between centers would work plenty fine ,as I would be turning(like yourself) custom cones /tail cones/boat tails ,other standard ogive stuff i would just purchase commercially.

I would really need a bench top unit ,as the old shop is plenty full of stand alone power tools ,so space is at a premium.

I shall go do some homework with the info you gave me ,dig out some woodworking magazines (I have about a million)and study up.

Man ,you sure did get the wheels turning now

Thanks Jim :handshake:

The Rikon looks like the better deal to me. 1/2HP, variable speed, and 16" between centers. The Jet mini is also 1/2HP, but only 14" between centers, and costs over $700. Unfortunately, I've never used a Rikon or Jet lathe. But I do have a Rikon stationary sander and bandsaw (Craftsman), and I've been very happy with both.

They sell Rikon locally here in my city.

$700 bucks would be a bit much for me for a lathe ,heck...I wouldn`t have cash left over for chisels and tools LOL

I hear good things about Jet.

How about Grizzly ?

I`d like to be in the $400 range ,without getting a piece of junk.

Cap'n that is a fine set of nose cones! I've always enjoyed woodworking (and metal working too, for that matter). I've wanted a lathe for a long time, but I KNOW it would be one of those hobbies (like rocketry), where there's always just one more thing to buy. I've done a lot of veneering and such with so-called exotic woods, and some day I'd like to veneer a body tube and turn a nosecone out of cocobolo or purpleheart, or something special.

The only thing I ever bought from Grizzly was a mini metal lathe. I used to use it a lot, but had to repair it a couple of times. I'd say the quality was only marginal. You should go look at the Rikon. I looked at one when I was at Woodcraft yesterday, and it looked pretty nice.

What about a unit on rollers? My garage got so jammed up with (power) tools that I finally started putting everything on wheels*. I've even seen designs of "cabinets" on wheels that have tops that can be flipped. For example, you could have a small drill press on one side of the top and a belt sander on the other side. Inside the cabinet is storage for bits and sanding belts.

*and still can't get the car in!

Why would you want to put your car in the garage? That's not what garages are for!

The last time was a cold December ('92? '93?) when I squeezed my '75 Impala in to do a tune-up. I learned to jack the front end up and pull the wheels off for a straight shot at the spark plugs.

I used to have a buddy with a 76 Blazer, and he used to do that just so he could reach the engine. It was lifted a bit.

It is in Syracuse.

Actually I'm always astonished at how many houses in my neighborhood have what clearly used to be garages that were converted into living space. Granted, most of them started out as pretty small houses with not much room to add on. Still, scraping a foot of snow off your car first thing in the morning, just so you can start it up and get it warm enough to drive, just so you can go to work? I don't think so. I've done it — I spent a few years here with no garage — and I'd never go back.

... even if I did have another place to put a workshop besides the back of the garage.
