Locally, most all Boxster owners are female, with 911s being the choice of the males.

Beautiful/QUALITY cars no doubt...I just never could get used to the rock-crusher clutch pedals that pivot at the floor instead of from above. That's just my pre-'96 experience...maybe Porsche/Audi/V-Dub does it different now.

I, too, confess a great fondness for metal that bears the Stuttgart crest. Because I am currently in the "must have four doors" phase of my life, I opted for a Cayenne several years ago, and it has proven to be the most reliable car I have ever owned. A Panamera may be in the cards in the next few years.

A wise man once told me that the ideal car has two seats and just enough luggage room for a pair of toothbrushes and some exciting lingerie. A Boxster fits that bill.

Boxster trivia: 90%+ of the little beasties are built in Finland, surprisingly.

Although I don't personally have one, I frequently ride in my friend's 2003 Boxster S. It's a very competent car, quick and agile. The handling is superb whether your going 25 mph or 125 mph. Ride and seats are comfortable. The 6-speed stick has a short throw, and is precise. He's got almost 90K on it, but doesn't drives it in the winter. (He's got a 2007 AWD Ford Explorer Sport Trac and 2008 AWD Mercedes E350 for the winter.) His wife also has one. Her's is a 2004 Boxster Base with the paddle shiftable automatic. She drives this year round, but takes off the summer tires and uses either Michelin or Bridgestone snow tires in the winter.

The either of the 2010 Boxsters should fulfill you need for speed, and IMO better than the more expensive 911s. The 7-speed manual/automatic is quicker and gets better mileage than the 6-speed manual, so if I bought one, that's what I would get.

Other similar cars you might want to look at are the Lotus Elise, and the Pontiac Solstice GXP and it's twin the Saturn Sky Redline. The GM products have the same performance level as the Boxster or Elise, but at half the price. Unfortunately 2009 is the last year for both of these great cars.

If the other half doesn't like a two seater, the AWD Subaru Impreza WRX STI gives comparable performance and handling in a 4 or 5 door package. (I have 4 friends with WRXs so I've been in these vehicles as well.)

I would recommend against a Pontiac anything, since that brand is history. I love the Saturn Sky, but I would be very hesitant to buy a Saturn anything either, even though Roger Penske is buying Saturn from GM some time soon.

I really like the Lotus Elise and Exige, but the Elise is more affordable.

I still have a 1984 944 I bought in 1983. Sitting in my garage up on blocks as I slowly replace timing belts and water pump (no failure but it was due).

My all time favorite 'drivers' car (and I had many). Not the fastest but a joy to drive.

Three years ago my truck's engine blew on a Thursday, and I was in desperate need to find something, since I was starting a new job on Monday. I decided I'd buy a "commuter car". I had a Jetta 15 years ago, and really loved that car. I found a clean, low mileage 2001 VW GTI with the VR6 engine. This has to be one of the hottest little sleeper cars there is. Also a nicely outfitted car loaded with heated leather seats, power everything, 4 wheel discs, moonroof, etc. My wife and I occasionally take it to Denver to see family, and the ride and handling on a highway trip is pleasant

Factory specs say 170 BHP, and is pretty quick stock. I've been considering an older Porsche for awhile, but I keep thinking I should hang onto this. It would be excellent project car. The Euro car shop I bought it from has done tuning on the VR6s, including new computer chip, new exhaust and intake, with dramatic results. And I've seen some GTIs that have been supercharged. Doing some Googling looks like you could get a lot more HP out of this engine and still keep it pretty streetable.
