SCALE - Mercury Redstone Gallery

As scale projects go, I once thought that a Mercury Redstone had to be one of the simplest options. That was before I became intimate with Launch Escape System Towers. Those can take a level 1 or 2 rocket and quickly turn it into a level 5 operation. It does look nice when its finished though.

The only Mercury Redstone I have built is the one from Sheri's Hot Rockets. (I have built and rebuilt other LES towers though) It was a unique experience and used lots of methods with which I was unfamiliar. It seemed to have taken forever to build and even longer to overhaul but I think its worth it.

The original build lost its styrene LES on the maiden flight and has since made one flight without it. I am working on a tower rebuild and even hope to have it done in a year starting with the number "2".

My last Merc-Redstone was an enlarged paper model, that I entered in the NARAM-50 Scale event. It got 170 of 200 possible dimension points, and flew beautifully on a D12-3.

Sadly, it died a horrible death at NARAM-51, when the D12 cato'ed and burned it to a crisp. Tom Beach decided that the pics he had on the cato were sooooo good, he'd run them in Sport Rocketry.

Well, I sorta did it to myself. Tom showed me the pictures right after the flight and the color of the engine cato was very pretty (and impressive). He says "That's not a color you see in a properly functioning engine, Bunny". After I quit laughing, I replied "Do not print that photo in the magazine!"

I build them BIG so I have learned, for me, that brass tubing and the soldering gun is the best option to build a tower. I also incorporate a slip joint in the tubing so it has a chance to move, expand and contract.

Since I tried this, I have NOT had a problem with my towers..

Here's my LIII cert rocket. it's 10" diam and all scratch built.

I don't know some Bum that hangs out at our launches...

Actually that was before Stickershock23.com existed.. I painted the lettering by hand and the black stripes were masked and sprayed.

If I fly her again, I will update it before the flight.

Yep that 1/35 plastic towers are a bit of a pain... but the 1/42nd tower where the kit gives you a board of "beaded" strips to be cut apart with an x-acto then sanded to shape and diameter...was a Bigger PAIN LOL!!!! But I am still flying that now ancient model
The Mercury Redstone is one of the "man in Space" models I think every rocketeer should have in their fleets.

Yep, thats me. I actually had a better soundtrack but it got pulled because I was using Night rangers you can still "ROC" in america.. It was better wit hthe commentary and the sound ofthe launch!

Here are a couple shots of my Centuri Mercury Redstone. The first pic was taken in 1972 or so, I launched it off a modified SkyTrak tripod. I was using a Polaroid to take the picture, so this is a scan of a 8x10 dupe made from the Polaroid.

The next shot was taken last year, as you can see she lost her "spike" on the LES.

I've been on this "big & little" kick recently.

Build the small kit, then upscale it.

So far I have an interceptor, x-15, patriot, darkstar, phoenix, big bertha, etc...

I have a whole family of crayons.

Heres My smallest Mercury Redstone. it's actually a PMC from the MRC 1/200 scale Man-in-Space collection. but it does in fact fly LOL! For awhile it was also my smallest micro model but that's long since changed.

Ps the Mercury-Atlas from the same kit also convert well and flies.

The Mercury Redstone is one of the "man in Space" models I think every rocketeer should have in their fleets.

I built one of the "beaded" Estes kits as a kid. The tower and multi-piece fins were both a pain. One of the more difficult kits I built. But I loved flying it!

Oh yeah I forgot about the fins...they were kind of a PITA as well.
I think the 1/35th scale kit also use basicly the same 4 or 5 piece fins. I built my Beading board tower structure in my motel room while on a work trip... Kept me out of the bars LOL!!!

The Mercury-Redstone Launch Vehicle, designed for NASA's Project Mercury, was the first American manned space booster. It was used for six sub-orbital Mercury flights from 1960–61; culminating with the launch of the first, and 11 weeks later, the second American (and the second and third humans) in space.

A member of the Redstone rocket family, it was derived from the U.S. Army's Redstone ballistic missile and the first stage of the related Jupiter-C launch vehicle; but to make it man-rated, its structure and systems were modified to improve safety and reliability.

The four subsequent Mercury manned flights used the more powerful Atlas booster to enter low Earth orbit.

Mfg. Description: This is the Dr. Zooch Rockets Mercury Redstone flying model rocket kit. It is a model that represents the rocket that sent the first American into space! But this kit is much more than that- it is designed to give the builder a choice of building it to represent ANY of the Mercury Redstone flights- MR-1A, MR-2, MRBD (Yes, you get all you need for the obscure, but historically critical MRBD flight), MR-3 (Freedom 7) or MR-4 (Liberty Bell 7). This kit contains NO plastic parts and is designed to be flown with the escape tower on- like it’s supposed to fly- not with the tower off like a squirming hatch-blower would fly it. This is an average skill level kit- but the escape tower is a complex build and will require patience and direction-following.
The kit is based on a T-60 tube and, when fully constructed stands 23.5 inches tall with a 4.15 inch fin-span and has a basic empty weight of 3.2 ounces. It is single stage and uses a standard 18mm motor, such as a B6-4 (NO engines are included with the kit). This is an average skill level kit, meaning that most modelers can build and fly it successfully. All of the primary parts are either wood or paper.
