No, your won't have to buy a firearm, but a free NRA membership may help protect your RIGHT to purchase a firearm.

I'd like to rejoin the NRA, but I'm not putting up with the daily phone and mail solicitations that go with it. I let my membership lapse in 2006 and have stuck with the non-invasive GOA since that time. Yes, I requested to be put on a no-contact list multiple times, but it never worked.

I've been a member for over 10 years and never had trouble with phone solicitations, but as far a mail goes you get a constant supply requesting contributions. Were the calls from the NRA or telemarketers?
Now, if there is any industry that should be introduced to hot lead, it is telemarketers.

I got a constant barrage from them asking for extra donations, early renewals, questionaires, etc. I don't know if it was direct NRA employees, or contracted telemarketers for them, but the results were the same. I got a minimum of three or four calls per week, sometimes multiple calls in a day.

I can't renew without a valid phone number unless I write a personal check. I haven't written a check in years. I use a debit card or cash.

Many of my neighbors have guns, which is fine with me - to each his own. Hunting, particularly for whitetail deer, is really big here in the Adirondacks. It is an important part of our culture. I have not heard anyone complain that it is in any danger of disappearing due to a loss of access to firearms. It was also very popular around my neighborhood in Detroit when I was growing up. (The difference between there and here was that in Detroit, the fathers of my friends had to go elsewhere in the state to find the deer.) Despite all of that, I have never been tempted to join in the pastime, and I don't really care for venison. Around here, there really isn't any other reason to own a gun. None of my friends and neighbors who own guns feel that there is any threat to their right to have them. Scare-mongering by the NRA is always good for the NRA, though, even if there is no basis in reality for it.

I don't know anyone here who is in favor of banning private ownership of guns. The local sentiment here is just about the complete opposite of that, in fact. But I don't know anyone around here who thinks that there is any likelihood that they would ever see such a ban in the U. S. It would be contrary to our national identity, and I'm sure that it would be a huge hit to our economy in the Adirondacks. This really isn't an issue that I give much thought to, because I am neither a gun owner nor am I a supporter of gun bans. But I don't think that there is any political support in the US for anything resembling a gun version of Prohibition.

I thought about this as well except what benefit or incentive would the free membership provide? For the hobby I can see where it could give us a better idea of the number of active rocketeers. It seems like most rocketry mfg's go by TRA/NRA numbers to determine their market base (or at least I've heard the numbers come up in arguments surrounding legal issues.) The current incentive for a paid membership is to certify for high power access or insurance coverage. If anything, I can see how the membership could potentially go through the roof. The newsletter cost can be absorbed by advertisers, who of course should realize their new larger target audience. I'm sure there is a business formula that could potentially justify a free membership. If anything, it would be nice to see how many rocketeers are interested in the hobby, just not so much in paying for the membership.
