In fairness to Huntsville, it is a metropolitan oasis in the middle of...Alabama. Still, it was not in great taste when NARAM came to town and the organizers embraced the iconic Union Jack.

You mean Confederate Flag modified to be a NARAM patch. I was totally P*ssed when I saw that, far too late. If I'd had a clue early on that was the design, I'd have done my all to get that changed.

And indeed, Huntsville is an oasis from the rest of the state.

I seem to remember W being treated as a vowel by the Naval Research Laboratories text-to-speech algorithm too. I wrote a program based on the algorithm back in the late 70's.

I lived most of my life in Alabama. I saw and heard a lot. Up to and including current leadership. I stand behind the Arrested Development.

The first submarine killed far more of its own crew than anyone aboard ships. You forget when it sank during a test run, killing everyone. And then when it sank right after its one and only attack killing another crew. Kind of like a bomber blowing itself up 30 seconds after dropping its bombs, not my idea of successful (it may have sunk due to the concussion of its bomb-on-a-stick, sinking itself). Sort of like it was the first Kamikaze ship, without the crew knowing.

The rocket that sent crews to the moon, the basic design was by Germans, and many of the experts at Marshall came from other states. And many African-Americans who were recruited to go there.... .refused, because.... Alabama in the early 1960's. It is so bizarre and without shame that meme would dare show a non-white guy attempting to tout Alabama's history, instead of Bull Connor from "Bombingham" and George "segregation now... segregation forever" Wallace.

Yeesh, it was a joke... and I lived in Huntsville for some time and am quite fond of that city. The black guy is there because he's the guy who said the "I didn't know I came here to be disrespected" line.
