Semroc Saturn 1B

Well, since it looks like I may be another 2 months before flying again, I decided I want some new rockets to fly when I do. And since I bought a bunch at NARCON, the first one out of the box is the Semroc Saturn 1B.

Here's my question:

I was looking at the options, and I rather like the 24mm option. Has anybody had any experience with how this kit handles the higher 24mm motors, like E15's? Or maybe even an F12? I'd like to know people's results, if any, before I dive into this.

You can do what you want, but I'm a firm believer that the Saturns were meant to fly clustered. I recently built my vintage Estes K-29 kit, but substituted the Apogee Apollo Capsule kit and added additional detailing not
found in either the Estes or SEMROC kits.

Is that what you're entering in sport scale?? You should be able to pretty much clear the field with it!

Sorry, barking up the wrong tree here, didn't mean to hijack your thread...

I'm sure somebody will chime in pretty soon with the answer to your question. I'd tend to think that you'd want to stick to the lower average thrust motors, to get a little slower liftoff. I'm sure an E or F would kick it up there pretty good, if it's designed to fly low on a BP D12. I wouldn't go with a high thrust motor, unless you like 'boom and gone' flights, and what's the fun of that with a scaler like this??

Sorry Jeff, I'll probably enter the Vostok this time. The clustered engine mount of my 1-B is not exactly perfectly straight along the center line (the Estes version was more difficult to do compared to the SEMROC kit, there lies
the "problem"). I'm afraid if I go ahead and launch the 1-B, it might crash.
So, I AM going to order another Saturn 1-B from SEMROC in the near future
and build it for flying (it'll be my third 1/70 1-B build in less than a year!!) and
just keep the Estes kit for static display.

Built stock, RockSim says you will get about 800' using a single E15 or F12.

Following video shows my build. I used a 4x24mm cluster. Video also shows a couple places where i strengthened the rocket (fins and transition shroud).

Some people have built removable/swappable motor mounts. A 24 motor mount, and a 4x18mm motor mount.

Do what I did.
Build it both ways.
I've flown mine on a E15 and an F24. Great flights!
But the 4 C6s are also great.

Nice pictures! Did you cut your own centering rings or have someone make them for you?

The cluster centering rings are from a FlisKits motor mount (EMK4-18-70) cut down to fit the BT70 coupler.
The 24mm centering rings (CRF-50-70) are also from FlisKits cut to fit the other coupler.
The aft ring from the kit was cut to fit the BT70 "mother" tube.
