So the only semi-auto rifle I own is the M1 Garand... but something hit me this weekend, and now I have this insatiable urge to build my own 10/22. I am not sure if I want it for competition(?) or plinking(?) Maybe a little of both, so we will call it long range target shooting. I do not varmint shoot, but if needed it should be humanely accurate I would think... the rest would be on me to be accurate.

Show me your 10/22 builds if you would not mind; a laundry list of components is helpful, seeing as I have zero 10/22 components on hand.

Something like this? Never got all fancy or got this one "finished". But, if you want to put one bullet after another through a 1 inch hole beyond 100 meters.... this will do it.

My Sportsman's Team Challenge build. I added sling swivels to it after STC moved from the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio. With a sling on, it's scary easy to hit moving targets while standing, kneeling, or sitting.

Shoot me a PM if you really want to talk a custom 10/22 build. It is not a trivial task or a task to be taken lightly. ;)

Since we don't shoot STC anymore, I don't get to use it much, but I am going to take it squirrel and rabbit hunting next time they are worth eating.
Maybe hunt some coons.... only shots through the eye are acceptable. ;)

I'm half way through building another AR. This one I'm building inexpensive and for sale. It's an Anderson MFG M4. All Mil Spec. It has an upgraded rail by Wilson Combat. Got it on sale during Black Friday sale for $109. Almost 40% off. WC has some good prices on just about everything.
Now something funny. I can't seem to download the video. Go to You Tube and look for Cows with Guns.

Have you considered a 22-250? I have one and it suits my long-range style of shooting.

For @teepot:

OK... Here is Mr. Lyons "Official" "Cows with Guns" YT listing.... visually boring? But utterly hilarious!

Here is the HD version of the one with "South Park"-like cows animated as a visual to the Dana Lyons audio track. This is my fave. :D

Still doing inventory
Shop has a 10/22 with a three digit S/N.
I had to look that up to see if real, it is!
The shop I worked in years ago had a Luger come in that turned out to be a true post war Luger made with pre-war parts (it had a DWM toggle not the later version) took about 2 weeks to chase the trail.

I built this one after a decade of owning a book on customizing a 10/22 😆 ... I wish I had done so MUCH earlier. One of my favorites!

5 bulk ammo bullets in one hole at 25 yards with front resting on a bag.

(Notice the triangular barrel. I also have a matching black and red Ruger bag for the rifle.)

This one I bought stock to make a custom blue/"ice" version to follow the red one, but it shot so well that I didn't want to mess with it (pouring more money into a good rifle doesn't always make it better).

Found better pics of the red one...

Gotta start on a blue one next time I can find a stainless 10/22 at a decent price. I already have an unfinished stock, some blue woodstain matched to a color sample I picked, a Kidd trigger and some SS barrels.

Talking about old rare guns. The Shop I worked at in Vegas would receive guns for the Mob Museum. I handled a few. One belonged to Whitey Bulger. There were others. But my memory is not coming up with them.

Here is my latest build. An Anderson MFG. Mil Spec M4. I upgraded the forearm to a Wilson Combat rail that I got for half price. $60. An enhanced LPK with a Boron Nickle hammer and trigger. And I put some inexpensive sights on it. 20230131_150644[1957].jpgI'll put it up for sale at $765. Cost me $550 in parts.

Possibly, but how is it any worse than a paid registration?

I agree that the brace rule is wrong.
Because it was sold as a legal product, and then made an NFA item by rules fiat and political posturing, not an act of law. Same as the bump stock ban, which also did not survive legal challenges.

Correct, and I already said that the rule was wrong. We’re in agreement there.

But earlier you seemed to overreact when I said I was going to take advantage of the free registration.

By registering my braced pistol as an SBR, and taking advantage of the no-charge period, I will also be able to install a stock. I had considered paying the $200 to do that anyway. Might as well take advantage of the opportunity.

Its a bummer that you cant just buy the action/lower a la AR parts, thats all i want, I'm going to replacing everything anyway and 299 is a lot to spend when one isnt even going to utilize 90% of it :(

of course 299 is a good start towards.... https://franklinarmory.com/f17-x/

When the brace's first came out I was working at a gun shop. We looked at the first one we got and said, what is supposed to stop someone from shouldering it. We thought the ATF was nuts. Now 10 years later they decide they made a mistake. That's nuts. Yesterday I stopped by the gun store. I have a friend with a braced pistol. Wanted to know if we could do the paperwork ourselves. A customer I know said Hi and said he got his SBR stamp back in 30days! He went through Silencer Shop. Paid them the $50 fee and they did the rest. Now he has an MP5 clone with the sliding stock. He showed off his new Staccato 2011. Butter smooth trigger. Mean while my ATF paperwork is now 3 or 4 months in limbo. He said they were doing the brace SBR's fast. I think I'll get something and then SBR it too.

Great to know.
I agree; ATF made a total mess of this by flip-flopping the way they did. A brace used as a brace isn’t a stock, but a brace used as a stock is a stock. They really should have advised congress to get rid of the SBR and SBS laws, and de-NFA suppressors while they’re fixing things.

My 10/22 backpacker came a couple of weeks ago. I’ve had it out to the range, and it runs great. It’s very light and takes down into an incredibly compact package. I was able to load it into a regular book bag type backpack with magazines, ammo, eyes, ears, tools, etc. and there was plenty of room to spare. That’s super convenient, and I really appreciate not having the heavy cases for a trip to the range. I also appreciate that the ammo is 1/4 the cost of the 9mm for my PC Carbine. I really like it!

I have a few things I’ve purchased to set it up the way I want. I’m going to want a red dot for it, but haven’t picked one out, and suggestions are welcome. But to be ready when I do get the optic, I bought a picatinny rail that is built around a left-handed charging handle mechanism. I prefer left handed charging so my right hand can stay on the gun, and this is the only solution I’ve seen to set up a 10/22 that way.

I’ve also bought an auto bolt release. The way the stock 10/22s require you to press the bolt stop while pulling back the charging handle is really annoying, so this is a cheap fix for that. This will allow the bolt to release just by pulling back the charging handle, like you would expect it to work.

I’ve got a few other minor parts to install too, but those are the main ones I wanted to set the gun up to function the way I want.

In a week or so, I’ll post some pictures.

Thanks to everyone who told me a 10/22 is a must-have gun for new shooters. I like it!

I recommend a Vortex optic. Very good stuff. Plenty of price points. Check out Midway. They run specials often.

Vortex makes great glass! But for a 10/22 scope, I don't think you can beat the Mueller Eraticator 8.5-25x x 50 AO for the money. I can shoot standing slung at any magnification. I can shoot off-hand at 8.5x all day. Or I can shoot NRL22 from a bag, or bench rest even. Big objective compensates a bit for a little less perfect glass.

Still MSRP under $300... I bought mine a decade ago for not much less than that. Shoots like a $1000 scope.

Mine repeats which is cool. Illuminated dot reticle if you want to turn it on... 11 brightness levels. I built a range card for mine.

I also used a set of adjustable scope mounts with inserts that allowed me to align the scope and rifle "bore lines" to either be parallel to infinity or converge where I want. I always choose parallel. It was worth the time and money to use them. Do not know if they still make them.

It's a 50mm objective lense, so you might need taller mounts. BEST to mount to the barrel, preferably a bull barrel. Mounting to the receiver with a slip fit barrel is not quite as "true" as a direct barrel mount.

Info dump complete. ;)
