Could OpenRocket developers please consider switching to metric units

Hi TRF colleagues, and here especially OpenRocket developers,

I am a big fan of OpenRocket. But I do wish that you would switch to metric units. Doing so would make things much easier not only for me but for metric users around the world.

Please consider this:
  • If you try it, you will find that metric units are much easier to work with.
  • The fact is that the rest of the world uses metric units. OR fans in continental Europe, Australia, and everywhere else would appreciate the change.
I understand, of course, that as a user I can change the default units in settings. But all your expamples and tutorials use foot-pound units, and this makes things difficult.

As always, I remain an OR devotee. However, please consider my suggestion.

Thank you.

Stanley

I'm at a loss? You can change preferences to metric, and when you do that with the examples, they change to metric.

I could maybe understand your issue, if you didn't live in Maryland.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

I believe this is the second post I have seen where you have lobbied for your cause. Could you please explain to me why the developers should do more than the following?

Hi @lakeroadster,

But the examples don't change. For instance, I have just been following the thread about simulating the Jolly Logic Chute Release in OR.

All the example posts use the foot-pound system. So, if I want to follow the numbers, and I do want to do that, then I have to convert them all.

I am using the latest release TODAY, and the units change INSTANTLY when you hit CLOSE on the Prefs tab.
Uninstall whatever you have and start fresh with the RELEASE version 22.02.

Hi @cautery,

Thank you for your response.

Here is the issue to which I am referring. Look at @H. Craig Miller's excellent post #10 in the thread about the JLCR. All of those numbers use the foot-pound system. None of them change even though I have my preferences set to metric units.

Stanley

When you run a simulation - which I'm assuming you're refering to - the results are displayed in whatever units you have currently set OpenRocket to. Then you change your preferred units to something else, and the simulation table immediately changes to the new units.

So if HCM like to use foot/pounds...then when you make examples use metric. Maybe Craig likes imperial and we know you adore metric (to the point of being a nuisance about it).

Look at the following.... It is ALL metric, and posed almost precisely like the gentleman posted on the JLCR thread.
Seriously, it's easy. Edit ---> Preferences ---> Units

Click "Default Metric"
Click "Close"
Save the file.

Re-run your simulations, etc.

ONE BUTTON.
Your problem is solved with the click of ONE button. ONE. :)

Hi @cautery,

OK. Maybe I am wrong, but I really would like to understand this because it would help me.

We are looking at HCM's first diagram in his Post #10, right?

It says Strip length = 2.1 in, Strip width = 1.2 in, and Strip area = 2.52 in^2.

But that's on a graphic. So how do I automatically convert those foot-pound units to metric units? Please explain this to me, and I would be very grateful.

Stanley

OK. So you are saying that I should just reenter the data, and switch the units to metric.

Well, perhaps all of you are correct, and I am wrong. I concede the point. I guess that I am making too much of this.

You are right, and I am wrong. Thank you for your good advice, which helps me.

I don't think anyone's saying that. We're saying we're not able to magically turn everyone's posted screenshots into metric, nor are we able to convince everyone to post their screenshots only in metric.

Ask someone to post their sim. Open their sim. Now it's in metric, huzzah!

All you need to do is change your preferred units, either globally or individually.

The units in all of the examples with conform to your selected preference.

No data re-entry needed.
Hi @H. Craig Miller,

I guess that I am dense. However, I don't understand what you are saying, and I really wish that I did understand.

I am looking at your Post #12 on the Jolly Logic simulation issue.

I have my OpenRocket settings defaulted to metric units. But when I click on your graphic, all the measurements are in foot-pound units. I would like them to be automatically in metric units.

You're just clicking on a graphic. A static image of what H. Craig Miller shared previously - showing the units that were on his screen at the time. There's no way to fix that - it's just a picture of his version of OpenRocket set the way he had his preferences at the time.

Yes.

In general, the OR team members who post help information like this are going to do it using the settings they prefer for their day-to-day usage. We're not going to switch around our units just to take screenshots except under unusual circumstances.

The exact values in tutorial screenshots like Craig provided above shouldn't be the important thing, it's the method that is being illustrated.

One thing to keep in mind: within a component configuration dialog, you can switch units on-the-fly by just clicking on the unit.

This is a very easy way to toggle back and forth if needed for a particular parameter or two, without needing to go back to the preferences panel each time.

Hi @CalebJ,

Right. Exactly. But I would like to analyze @H. Craig Miller's work using metric units.
