From time to time you'll see questions on here about older motors being flightworthy. Well this one most def was....

This motor was built 1988. It's a pre-white lightning c-slot, full house J motor, pushing my not-quite-tha-old LOC Magnum to 4200'. Since almost all photos of motors of this era in flight are in black and white magazines (which are themselves not that easy to find) I thought some of you might enjoy.

Beautiful shot, classic bird and a great story - thanks for posting. I'm still in the early stages of exploring the AT range (there was no AT agent / importer here in the UK for many years, but there is now). Loving that distinctive plume shown in your pic and the Blue Thunder loads I've flown so far, where the luminous portion is quite a distance from the nozzle (I don't know the technical term for it )

Dayum! Nice pic! My Magnum took up residence in a science teacher's classroom a few years (decades?) ago. I literally can't remember if I took the chute out or not. A bunch more ugly than yours, tho'. Thx for validating that antique propellant! Straight smoke and good chutes!

J285 was a C slot fast propellant. The slow propellant was a J125. The J125 became White Lightning and the J285 was Blue Thunder. The J700 was a core burning fast, then Blue Thunder, then the J800 reload. All the J285s I flew were fast low smoke.
