Greetings to all!

my apology for not posting information sooner. I wanted to let everyone know the progress of our company. We’ve had a series of setbacks. I had surgery on my foot back in February. I was off my feet for 3 months! Actually I wasn’t off my feet entirely. But, for all intents and purposes I was “offline.”
My business partner caught Covid and has still not fully recovered. It’s been bad for him, his wife (yes she had it too!), and his mother in law, and son! Terrible!
Anyway, I just wanted everyone to know where things stood. We are NOT stopping working on solid rocket motors!! We are currently working towards having some motors ready for testing ASAP.
I’ll let everyone know when that happens. Thanks for your patience as we forge ahead with diligence and hard work!!

Sorry to hear about all that trouble. I hope things settle down for all involved.

Hi Caleb!
Hey! Thanks for your concern!
In a word, SLOW! My business partner and the one who designs our motors caught a serious case of Covid last year. It nearly killed him. He’s still recovering. We have everything we need to make motors. We have our formula. It’s now just “hurry up and wait!”
I promise I will keep you posted. Plus, I had surgery on my foot early last year!! Sheesh! Will it EVER end?

Don't misunderstand - I'm entirely sympathetic to dealing with covid. But weren't you supposedly ready for testing the motors a year ago?

It's been a full year since this post:

"In my ever so humble opinion, there are “be’s” and “wannabe’s.” Lots of people WANT to make propellant AND rocket motors but are held back by numerous things. Mostly it’s lack of money. Sometimes it’s lack of brains. Sometimes it’s both. Sometimes it’s drive. Energy. Motivation.
I have found in my 38 years of making motors and propellant that there are lots of jealous folks out there. Oh they’d LOVE to make motors. They’d even love to have what I have. But they CAN’T. So the next best thing they can do is tear people down. And they become good at that. They don’t want to see another motor manufacturer come aboard. It would upset the balance. So the next best thing to do is try their best to run the guy off who is the new feller on the block. That eases their small minds. Makes ‘em feel big.
Which category are you. Where do you fit in. No money? No brains? No drive? Not enough energy? It’s gotta be one of those I mentioned." - Don Carter, 3/4/21

Come on' give the guy a chance. Some things take forever, especially if Covid just about killed his partner. Until someone loses their health, they have no idea how drastically their life can change. Believe me, I know.;)

Thank you Hobiedog!

Vaporware from the start
Hey cats! I’m not sure what vaporwear means but most likely it’s something not very nice.
This is JUST for you. My business partner nearly died from Covid. He still hasn’t fully recovered. As you know (or should) Covid can affect you in many ways. But, there are those who wear size 2 hats that evidently don’t know that. I hope that neither you or your family gets Covid. I’d hate to hear your reply in the event that happened.

I don’t need your approval nor your nasty comments. And with that I’ll say good day!

I just went back and read all of the original thread posts, there’s a wasted hour of my life that I’ll never get back.
All I can say wow, wow, just wow.
What a tractor trailer load (jim gets that) of bovine excrement. Please note that I tried very very hard not to interject in this hilarious spoof, but I could not resist.

couple pointers to the motor master too
1. You don’t need HEI for instant on starts, all my motors use e-matches and have instant on from the starter pellet that’s 99% of the time up the throat
2. Ditch the full graphite nozzle and go phenolic, if you can’t design around the erosion of the full phenolic then go with a graphite throat insert

Please don’t play the Covid card with me either, I have had it twice, the original Covid-19 and the Omicron variant

that all said I wish you good luck, I have a feeling you will need a lot of it

You all must have something better to do than to revisit this thread and poke at Don. Everything has been said by everyone. Don had good intentions, but lots has changed in 30+ years since he last made motors. Many of you don't have that perspective.

Don is quite old and he and his partner are not in great shape. Optimism and big plans give way to reality; we all know about that in our own lives. Things change when hardship comes knocking. Plans change when unexpected roadblock come up. If someone hasn't experienced this, they're either 4 years old or floating on a huge trust fund.

It would be cool to see Mr. Carter demo something some day. If not, it's been interesting. ;)

We’ve tested motors. Lots of them. That isn’t the hard part.

Quite old? How old do you consider old!?! Lol! Anyway, I appreciate your kindness. I was probably making solid motors when many here weren’t even born! The technology hasn’t changed a great deal. If you don’t think so, just take a look at the new “upgraded” solid motors being built for the new moon rocket. Same basic propellant that has been in used for 60 years or so. Yes, some changes in hardware, but the propellant is pretty much the same.

I’m not exactly sure what is meant by “playing the Covid card.” My partner was I’ll with it to the point of death. I think it disingenuous of anyone to question that. Lots of people have differing problems with Covid. Some get barely sick. Others a little more so. Some die. I will always protect my partner from those who question his illness.
As for luck. I don’t believe in it. We make our own way in life. No luck involved. Luck can’t be proved anyhoo.

Most likely making motors when many on this site weren’t even born. Not bragging. Just fact.
I’m not sure why the meanness. All I ever tried to do was offer motors that people could actually afford. I maintain that! I shan’t name names, since most of you already know. But, the motors that are on the current market are EXTREMELY overpriced. But it matters not. It’s all good!

Don just stay the course for you and partner.

I'm still very interested in a certified HEI motor. That'd be unique within the hobby (certified, it's been done as EX)

I wish you well and hope you're able to bring a certified product to market soon. As has been seen many, many times here, it's advisable not to announce products until they're ready for market.

Honestly,

I'm a little surprised at some of the comments aimed at Don.

While I've never met Don, I've read his work ("the basics of composite motor construction" - written back in 1984!), and know he was there at the founding of what is now TRA to help push the hobby past the G powered motor limit NAR and NFPA had for commercial sales.

At the very least, he deserves a little more respect from this group, as most of us have benefited from his work, even if we don't know it.

VERY kind words! Thank you! The last large motor/motors we built was for a chap in Utah. I believe they would classify as “P” size in today’s lingo. We sold him 2, one of which he flew at Black Rock. I’m not sure what he did with the other one. The motor worked flawlessly.
