[bike] I would pull on the sidewalk to let them all pass. Or, I would be riding thru a quieter section of the neighborhood. I really don't understand those few who insist on riding on a busy street, because it is their right to do so.. power-thing I guess..

Certainly is not complicated, it is stupid, uncalled for, and at times dangerous. Like I said 7-8:30 / 3-5 pm with heavy school and work traffic in both directions they do the same thing.

You can cross a double yellow if the traffic ahead of you is going less than half the speed limit. But safety with oncoming traffic is your responsibility. And for petes sake, don't do it as you're cresting a steep hill. Wait till you're on top with good vis.

And that cyclist is being a douche. There's no reason to be in the middle of the lane there.

Real cyclists are all on mountain bikes now. Road bikes are just exercise for quiet areas. I'll never ride sporty on the road again. When I did I stuck to quiet areas where passing was cake.

Here we go, leisurely only person on the planet, 9 MPH ride in a no passing 40 MPH area with 8 cars behind and an unused glass smooth sidewalk the entire route. You will see this during heavy traffic as well.

Bicycle riding on sidewalks is permitted in the State of Florida. Section 316.2065, Florida Statutes, Bicycle Regulations, provides as follows:


Florida law clearly provides that a bicyclist can utilize sidewalks to ride a bicycle. It is perfectly legal to ride a bicycle on a sidewalk. When there is an available bicycle lane OR when the sidewalk is crowded with pedestrians, it may be better to ride the bicycle on the side of the roadway.

Now I know laws are different is other areas, but in this situation would this guy get a ticket for riding on the sidewalk? if your child was riding down a sidewalk like this anywhere would an officer stop and make them get in the street?

That is poor form on the cyclist part, and I say this as a full on Lycra warrior myself. I’d get annoyed passing that guy on my bike because I would have to go closer than necessary to the oncoming lane. In general I try to do everything I can to share the road respectfully, and safely. BRIGHT flashing tail and head lights, brightly colored Lycra, staying as far right as is safe, stopping at lights and stop signs, not passing stopped cars at stop lights to move up the line, hauling butt when the light turns green so I don’t hold people up, and above all BEING PREDICTABLE. Some of these are laws, and some are just not being a jerk. In turn I expect people to go around me safely, I can’t get much above 23 mph on flat road, so I’d go around me too. I only get pissed when someone buzzes me, at least give me 3’ in case I hit a rock or an indecisive squirrel darts out in front of me. As for sidewalks, they would be unsafe on a road bike above about 12 mph no matter how nice they look…squirrels, dogs, acorns, wet leaves, rocks, sand, and the most unpredictable danger of all, pedestrians with headphones.

On a related note, there are route planners that show you heat maps of popular cycling routes based on those captured by cycling GPS units. I use Garmin Connect for this since all my running and cycling data is captured through my Garmin watch and cycling computer anyway. These are invaluable for avoiding dangerous roads as chances are a road that gets 100s of cyclists a day doesn’t have a reputation for a high body count.

As for time of day, I would rather be alive than right. There are select few roads I ride at commuting times. I certainly have the right to do so, but like many rights, it doesn’t make it a good idea. I would rather my RoadID remain forever an unneeded item.

Wait till it is safe and go around. The rules here are you can pass an obstacle over double lines if it is safe. Not sure your laws there.

This happened the other day.
A jar of butter toffee peanuts. You toss a handful in your mouth, start eating and bite into a skunky peanut. Can't see it because its' covered in toffee.
Yuck!

Very bitter, ruins a good PB&J.

I am in communications now, but years ago I was in the grocery business and at one point took a tour of a Zeigler plant making hot dogs. We didn't see the meat/product being processed but it came out in large stainless vats, due to the fat/bone/ligament/tendon content the creamed meat was an off white color, a bit like TightBond glue and about that consistency. There was a conveyer with a long tube, not cotton but that look, it was dark pink because it was saturated with dye. They would connect one end of this tube to a pump and pump it full of the white creamed meat, then a machine would crimp the tube every 8 inched with some sort of fastener, (hence the wrinkles on each end of a hot dog). A conveyer pulled this meat cream filled tube through an oven cooking the meat which absorbed the pink dye. As it came out it was pulled tight popping off the crimps and air pressure pushed the newly minted hot dogs in to another vat for packaging. Not really a peeve but we were on the subject and thought you might like to know how this delicacy was manufactured. Bon Appetit.

Price is a factor in evaluation of bids, but it's not the only factor. A more expensive bid can win if their proposal has more merit in other factors.

People who tailgate but don't even try to pass. I'm usually running 5 over but if I have to allow stopping distance for two I slow down. They usually figure it out when I get down to 40.
My biggest peeve is vehicle manufactures putting fun-house mirrors on the right side of everything.
I would bet most road rage incidents start from cutting someone off because that fun-house mirror made it look like they were clear when they were not.
If you want real mirrors on a motorcycle you have to buy Police Bike mirrors because Police Bikes come with real mirrors. Police expect to have to cut in and out of traffic. Think there is a reason they want real mirrors?

I missed the cycling version of the thread, so sorry for doing a necro on that topic if it isn't as important as hotdogs. From my personal perspective, hotdogs are very important and I don't cycle right now, so. . .

I will say, from my perspective, a bicycle or motorcycle rider has to assume they are about to be killed by idiots every moment of their ride. The president of my company was killed 3 years ago on a bicycle ride out in the country on less than busy roads when a vehicle hit him. To his family and my company, the loss of that person is very real. It happened on a Saturday in the early afternoon, so drunk driver is unlikely in the scheme of things, but the person ran from the scene and his death is unresolved.

When we used to be able to go to the beach for a vacation, the beach we chose was very bike friendly. I believe the paths were multi-use (i.e. bike section and people section, but no cars) and even the tourists (like me) would yield to people.

Having said that, my 'out in the country' neighborhood has recently been tripled in size due to a new building frenzy. Over the past year or two, apparently the middle of the road is where you walk, push the stroller, walk the dogs etc. I've always driven 25mph down the streets (35mph posted) as deer used to pop out all the time and even at 35mph, they damage cars and you ruin the deer's day. Now, I drive 25 until I get to a certain section and then go to 15 or stop while waiting on people to get out of the literal middle of the road. On occasion, I roll down the window and wave as they walk around my truck and just say 'sorry for the inconvenience, just trying to get home.' Its not a city, its out in the country. . . counted 7 deer in my yard when I got home. . .

I'm not sure if it is due to COVID or the new expansion, but walking down the middle of the road, with dogs or pushing a stroller with your kid in it is just friggin dumb. And there are at least 10 different groups that do it daily.

I still ride, but when I was 12 I rode barefoot, shirtless, glass double cola bottle in one hand, we set up ramps and jumped each other laying in the street, and we all had a wrench in our back pocket to loosen our buddy's front wheel when he was not looking.

And people who do not know how to merge, or use their brake to merge. traffic should not adjust to match your speed, you should adjust to match traffic speed to merge.
