Can't find any Swiss or Goex anywhere now. Richard Dierking was right. We've created a shortage.

I've sorted trash at large rocketry launches pulling out plastic bottles for recycling and there was always a bunch of BP in the little vials that people discarded.

Whaaaaaaat!? People just throw those out!? I've always added unused ejection charges to my BP stash... The little vials are also great to save to store pre-measured ejection charges before heading to the field... Weigh out the powder and put it in the vial at home, then at the field, open vial, dump it in the charge holder.

This thread reminds me of people posting pictures of empty toilet paper shelves during the beginning of COVID and further escalating the hoarding!!

$180 for way more than a lifetime supply seems like a silly impulse buy to me. I'll hope for the best or just figure out an alternative solution if the worst comes to pass. I didn't buy cases of TP or barrels of water last spring either and that worked out just fine.

I have at least one taker for two pounds, and maybe another taker for a pound.

I never hoarded TP, but if it came down to it, BP is easier for me to make. Without a Sears catalog around to hang up like the old days, I'd have to find a better substitute.

Contributed to, yes, caused, no.

Hunting season is gearing up all over the country. Lots and lots of muzzle loaders being broken out, cleaned up, and sighted in right about now each and every year.

Yup. There was a time when I had over a hundred of those small tubes of BP. I still have a bunch. I left some at FAR for people to use.
Keep in mind that many people just want to launch their rocket and I not really concerned about keeping BP for the next time. Because they know they'll get more tubes of BP with the next motor.
So, keep an ammo box at registration/RSO for people to drop off or use BP for their rockets. Also, a good way to control its use and not have lots of the stuff stored at home.

I'm sure Swiss will pick up the "slack"... I've been away from BP shooting for a while now (both muzzleloading & cartridge), but from reading the current literature, it looks like Swiss was becoming the preferred brand, anyhow.
Don't Panic!

Trying not to panic lol...the USLI team I work with uses A LOT of ejection charges and in previous years so I hope Swiss picks up production soon.

I like to shoot black powder rifles so having extra isn't a big deal. I sold one of my "pounds" to a fellow rocketeer who has helped me quite a bit for cost / no shipping. When I see powder, brass, primer, bullet shortage I think eh... I'm good.

Start hoarding now.

Anyone ever make meal BP for use (do not post how)? Any reason why it will not work or is it too fine?
The 4 lbs that I have is a mixture of FFFF and Meal, and it works just fine... not sure about pure Meal, but I cannot see why it wouldn't. Would just need to ground-test charge weights in case some adjustment is needed.

Would love to hear how it's done! If you have a website link that describes it, all the better.
Search youtube for Ned Gorski. He has the absolute best tutorials on making BP and related things. I don't want to do direct links to any of his videos for fear of getting them moved to the research area.

I did search YT for Ned Gorski, but unless I missed something, none of the video descriptions seemed to imply that video was about making BP. I did find one other good video on the subject and watched it, and if I ever run out of BP (not likely), I will make my own if necessary.

I have never mixed but I would ground test everything to include 4F.

This is one of the more expensive sources for all the chems but they do have them all as a kit and very good instructions. Even as "expensive", it is about $7 per pound after shipping. Since this gives formulas and step-by-step instructions, I fully expect this to get yanked.....but it's only a link, not direct info here on TRF so there is a chance it'll stay.
