Very nice. Where did you place the rail buttons? A friend of mine has one built and not sure where to put the buttons.
 
I cut the crap out of my "7"s before realizing they were there, scavving the trashcan and piecing them together. Did Mark include the chromey stickers? If they were in my package, I tossed 'em without looking... I ended up using automotive detail tape.inbound1475206594.jpg

Added some bits to the av bay. I used the bulkhead wire retainer to mark the bulkhead, and verified the distance from the edge. I confirmed it would work for the charge canisters, laid out the marks and used an automatic center punch to ease starting the drill bit. The canister needed a 3/16" hole, so drilled two per bulkhead. Then I drilled out the 'other' hole to 7/16" for the wire retainers...

I've been planning to launch this on Sep. 18, which is now tomorrow. When I found out a couple of weeks ago that our vendor will not be at that launch, I had to come up with a new shock cord attachment strategy. I had intended to use a threaded forward closure on the motor, but I don't have an appropriate Aerotech reload. I do have a Cesaroni J400, but that won't support a threaded closure for recovery purposes. I decided to use a Giant Leap hard point anchor, using three screws to hold it in place. I drilled the first hole in the air frame, marked the center line of the anchor, and used a long screwdriver to position it in order to drill the first hole in the anchor. I did my best to get it between the anchor's ribs by making a mark on the screwdriver and eyeballing it, and I managed to not drill the rib. With the first screw in place, I drilled the remaining two holes, tapped them like the first, and I now have an anchor I can use with Cesaroni, or any reload/motor combination.

Oh well. I had motor ejection set to just a bit after estimated apogee, 12 seconds, along with the altimeter RRC2+ for apogee.. neither separated the air frame for the drogue, the main appeared to at least push out the nose cone a touch, as it was not part of the coring... I'm still confused as to what went wrong, especially on the drogue end. Will examine closely as I disassemble, maybe something will reveal itself besides the Apogee plywood adapter breaking on impact, shoving the motor deep into the beast's belly. I have about a two foot core sample to dig out of the larger tube now... :questions: 😭

Thanks, I'll need to get some 54mm tube, a trio of couplers and some industrial strength band-aids, I imagine it will be a while before I manage to get it done. I will update here whenever I do. Stuff happens, we learn and adapt... 🤔 :rolleyes:😁
 
1.3 for the drogue, 1.5 grams for the main. The nose came off with authority when ground tested, the drogue test sheared the pins but the drogue was too tight to come all the way out so I increased it by the .3g and used a different drogue chute that packed much looser. Plus the full charge in the Cesaroni moter as backup...
 
Drogue side, I believe was 54mm ID 61.5 in / 156 cm long, Motor was 16 inches if it matters, av bay was 8 in / 21.3cm total. Main/upper section was 54mm for 40.5 in / 103 cm, minus, plus 3 inch ID for 20 in / 51 cm. Nose cone shoulder is 4 in / 10.15 cm, if it matters. 2 small shear pins on the drogue side, one small shear pin on the Nose.

I am sorry about your flight.
It’s a beautiful rocket ,you did a great job with the construction and finish .
1.3 grams is not enough to pressurize a 54mm tube 5 feet long.

I guess my mistake was subtracting the motor length, in addition to the av bay... and I did get separation on my ground test. I recalculate at over 1.5, close to 1.7 if I don't take out the motor length.

edit: I thought the motor eject was 1.5 grams, but it was also only 1.3...:dontknow:

It's a pity you weren't able to throw those nuclear thrust tubes into reverse in time... but seriously, really sorry it didn't go too well. Looking forward to the rebuild.

I have flown mine twice with 2.5-3.0 grams worked both times flawlessly
 
For BP calculations I use the formula out of Modern High Power rocketry. Diameter x diameter x length x 0.006 = grams of BP. Diameters and length in inches. This is the starting point for my quantities and is nearly always right. Use the empty volume of the compartment, so don't subtract any volume for the chute or lines. I would work out your dimensions from the earlier post but have been short on time. What figure do you get if you use this method?

Also, my backup charge is usually not smaller than 50% more than the primary charge. Sometimes 100% more.
