really have a soft spot for the large 24mm motors

dont fly them a bunch, but every time i do i think to myself "self, these are great, should fly them more!"

i remember building an Estes Black Brant II back in the mid 90's just for the F32W. never intended to get it back. darn thing landed about 30' from the pad after a blistering flight. had it till last year when it floated into a local corn field never to be seen again.

AeroTech 18mm single-use E25. The perfect motor for the Alpha III. The audible fin flutter buzz always got a good reaction from the crowd.

AT G80FWL single use. Cheap and a hoot to launch!

I just burned my last one this year. I'll miss them.

How do the the G80FWL compare to the G79WL?

I think I read somewhere that the G80FWL was the same motor as the G80T, just with the additive for a white flame. I have no citation though. (@AeroTech, any comment?)

Did you know thrustcurve.org has a comparison tool? https://www.thrustcurve.org/motors/...2310000000245&motors=5f4294d20002310000000068

But note that the G80 has gone through a couple redesigns, so today's G80 is not the same as yesteryear's. See this thread for more info: https://www.rocketryforum.com/threads/old-g80s.96958/

I believe the FWLs were sold exclusively through Magnum Rockets. They came in a plain black casing with no labeling, except on the end cap.

Yeah, they were a special magnum Exclusive. And the G80 did go through several changes. I do miss the classic 120 n/s G80. It had a distinctive thump on ignition, and I was always impressed how big the nozzle was on that motor :D. However, that being said, The new 137 n/s G80 is so much better. I wish they would do the same thing with the G40...

As for the SU Aerotech G motors, the new G80 and the G77 are my favorites. Like to keep one of each in the range box

the full tilt G motors are solid performers that, IMHO, never disappoint. The G64 and G76, the aforementioned G80 and G77 and the ‘almost H’ G138. All are great. Yes, know three of those are reloads…

I would love to see the G33 make a comeback. 3 seconds of fun.

<jedi>you will bring back the G33<\jedi>
It turned out that the G33 had a single propellant cartridge with 64g of propellant.
Pushed into HPR shipping regulations and became too expensive to ship.
The grain was cut in two and became the G53.

Wow, only 6 months? I remember them not being around for long, but only 6 months?

I wonder how well they would do today where hundreds of not thousands of more people own the RMS 18/20 hardware versus back in the early 90's when they first came out. I had a case, I bought the loads when I could, and I loved them. I would of paid extra for two extra nozzles, especially with the white lightning loads.

I still would love to see a comeback :D
AeroTech shipped out full case quantities to hobby distributors of the 'B' and 'C' reloads.
They probably hung on peg hooks in hobby shops and distributors for months/years.

AeroTech will not re-visit the 18mm RMS reload line as their focus has been getting out the A-D Q-Jet motors.
Not going to compete with themselves.
I expect the 'B' and 'C' RMS reloads if re-issued today would have similar sales performance as thirty years ago.

Hypothetically, would bonding the grain faces together turn it back into a G33? 🙃

One of my favorite regular flyers was an Estes BBII with a little neon green 9" nylon 'chute on composite E's. One or two HPR flights per launch maxed my budget. So little high flyers like that were entertaining filler and provided nice long recovery walks to make the day more eventful.

AT D21 is what I haven't found a good SU replacement for.

As long as they keep the 18/20 D motor reloads I will be happy.

The G53 is NOT the same as the G33 with cut grains. It uses fast jack propellant while the G33 used the original Black Jack. Cutting the grains in half wouldn't work since the halves were over 30 grams. However, I would love to see the original one piece G33 return even though they would be HAZMAT. with the removal of APCP from ATFE regulation, you don't have to worry about the 62.5g limit :)
BTW, epoxying the 2 grains together on the G motors will give a flatter thrust curve. Compare the 1 piece and 2 piece G64 thrust curves.

If I remember correctly the G33 had a 2 grain version. It was still over the 62.5 gram limit loaded so I think that was the issue.

Although the G53 is a nice motor, it still does not fill the void the G33 left.

Sad. Very Sad.

Q-jets are nice for the B and C's. Hopefully you'll come out some more Mello offerings. C16 and C18 are quite a jump from C6. And as I mentioned earlier a mellow D motor would be nice too. something like a D8. Might be harder to do with the Q jets especially how fragile the stock igniters are if it's an offset core.

Sorry got a little off topic here.

Name a favorite OOP motor.... 80 n/s F25 WL. The classic. 3 second burn. Perfect motor for the NCR Phantom 4000 and AT HV Arcas. The new one just not the same. Do they still even make the F25? I have not looked it up for so long because it lost favor when it moved to the new molded case.

You are correct about the change in propellant.

When the AeroTech kits were undergoing test flying, the HV Arcas kit was flown with a G33 RMS motor.
Let's just say that motor was NOT recommended for the HV Arcas model.
I think I have video of that flight somewhere...

The problem with a longer burn motor in the Q-Jet casing is thermal.
The casings can't take more than a second or so of propellant burn time.

I think the only thing I've ever flown on that has gone OOP is the old Estes E9. But I know I have an AeroTech D21 lying around somewhere, looks like those went OOP about two years ago now. I can only assume they've been replaced with the Q-Jet line.

Yes, the D10 and D21 are both OOP and we’re replaced with the Qjet. Less expensive case, different propellant etc.

Still have a few D10s. The old WL propellant combined with the small nozzle throat makes those buggers hard to light.

D10's are hard to light even when they are brand new :D. It is sad that the D21 was discontinued. Fortunately the D13 and D24's are still available (I just received a pack of D13's).

Another reason why a D8 would be a good load for the 18/20 casing :p

Probably similar to what happened when I tried flying a NCR Phantom 4000 with a F22J

Loki are snapring based as well. If I had to pick between Loki and AMW, it's AMW every time but Loki is a close second.

Loki is good, but different. I completely miss the Blue Baboon.

I agree. I'm sitting on my last 2 AMW reloads with one of them possibly being used this weekend. K600WW and L700BB AMW sparky and Blue aren't really comparable to any other vendor.

The closest is Blue Streak from CTI. The color is just not the same.

Are the SU D21 really gone? It feels like just last year when I bought a bunch from Wildman. I still got a bunch sitting in my motor box. Guess I should be more conservative with them now.
