I always thought it was a knock on the head.
Yeah, it's just a moderate hit, often cranial, as in "a bonk on the head". More than a bump, less than a clonk. (Originally a portmanteau? Dunno.)
I guess 'bonked' means something different in the US... 🤠 If I had bonked hard I'd be pretty pleased.
All about context. It means that too. Which can make the quoted example above into a double entendre.

Fair point. In this context it is more akin to "hitting the wall". You can tell that is how I meant it, opposed to the alternative you highlight, by the fact that I wasn't arrested for doing it on the sidewalk at 6 pm.

Actually, I thought you meant you had another, but minor, collision. This is the first I've heard of the cycling-specific meaning. I feel sure that comes from the more general meaning of a mild impact. "I really hit the wall - Bonk!"

I left out above that it can also be the sound effect for such a hit. It's used in a silly TTRPG called Teenagers From Outer Space in place of "hit points" or "damage". "She hit you with the guitar; take two bonk."

The other meaning is also often "boink". That one is unambiguous.

Within the "hit the wall" context, I've never thought of it as cycling specific, but more of applying to any endurance sport. The point at which, regardless of will, you just can't continue...simply the body physically can't anymore. This time I actually stopped just short of full bonk (done that twice with no desire for a third time) as I didn't want to have to call my wife to come pick me up from the side of the road. I had just enough left to walk the rest of the way home, slowly.

Hard-wired Cat6 Ethernet cable to my wife’s home office, built a BBQ grill, built a small storage shed, tried a new beer.

Finally got all the salt off everything (I hope) from the flats. The thunderstorms on the way home did wonders for the underside of the truck, didn't find white anywhere there. Giving it overnight to properly dry. Tomorrow getting things sorted and put away so I can find stuff. :)

Inventoried one of the largest NAPA Auto Parts stores in Georgia. 6 hours for the count, 4.5 hours for the variances and corrections. I'm WTFO.

I've had my eye on this watch for years. This particular dial and color is very difficult to find these days. I came across this one strolling through a department store on unrelated business. Excellent condition display model for $250 off. So, yeah.

Got a new (used) washing machine from a neighbor. I can't lift more than a bag of groceries, so I got my buddy Mike to do the heavy part. The neighbor was desperate to help, so she started moving stuff around to make a path (we had already cleared a path...). She knocked a lot of stuff over, and somehow managed to knock to the floor and step on my (unflown) Estes Gryphon glider and crush it. *sigh* Not the first time she's broken something valuable or expensive. ..et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris

Took the recycling in. Went into Walmart for bird seed. Ended up with seed and 2 cans of white paint. Then to the grocery store. I don't mind going. I've been doing since I got married. 39 years ago. I stopped looking at prices of things years ago. It was depressing. Just tell me what I owe at the end. Besides I had to go to the store. We were out of cat treats and ice cream. Everybody is happy.

I love doing the grocery shopping, did it this morning like I've done almost every week for my 39 (40 next week) years of marriage. Way back when cash was tight, it meant I could spend money and not feel guilty about it. And I'm much better than SWMBO about knowing general prices and sales. This week's bill was just over $80; Geniece will always spend over $100.

I took my daughters along as soon as they could sit upright in the cart seat. That may be why, when they got a bit older, they never squalled for the candy at the checkout, or for anything else for that matter. Not once.

I have a story about my nephew. He was 4 or 5 at the time and was shopping with my sister, his mom. He was very good about not asking for candy most of the time as well. One time, he reaches for a candy bar and grabs 2 and with his saddest looking puppy-dog eyes looks up at my sister, extends his arm with one of the candy bars and says "here mommy, this one is for you" That boy knew how to pull on a mom's heartstrings when he wanted to.

Someone had gone crazy with fraudulent charge

Twice this week, my wife has found 3 charges on our account that were fraudulent. Someone in D.C. using my card# via "KLM Airlines". Our bank is tiny (no traffic light in town) and the bank manager told her this morning that she was the 3rd customer to report fraud today. It's rampant.

Went to work.

My stepdad's been in town for a few days & we've been crushing lots of new-home projects. I had to go fly today, but I'll be back in the morning & back at the home projects.

Got back late last night from nearly three weeks visiting the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. ~3660 miles; most of it pulling our Aliner camper with our Outback. Now I get to process a couple thousand photos :) Until then, here's some crappy phone pics.

Hot tip for mouse plague survivors: When your BNSH (Brand New Second Hand) dishwasher stops working, it isn't gremlins. It's a dead mouse that prior to its demise crawled through the grease trap, up through the drain and lodged its bloated body in your U-bend.

It was not fun learning this, but at least the dishes are clean.

Lots less mice now. Found a brown snake skin near the chicken coop so no more bare feet outside for the next six months or so.
