OK, let's make this clear up-front that it will be something I'm doing wrong or misunderstanding - don't spare my feelings.

I placed the rocket with GPS transmitter exactly 100 feet in front of the handheld portion, and my screen says the following;

WTF is this trying to tell me, and why do none of the arrows point towards the rocket?

I have tested this at 5 different distances, and it almost seems that it will point towards anywhere BUT the rocket.

What am I missing? I appreciate the help up front
 
The handheld receiver doesn't have a compass or any way to sense which direction you're facing. It only knows what direction you're walking. You can use the "Compass" heading however to tell which way to walk (as long as you know what direction North is).

Put the tracker a little farther out, and start walking. You'll get a relative bearing (with respect to the direction you're walking), and a compass heading (relative to North).

It seemed a little confusing to me at first, but after tracking my first rocket (which didn't go out of sight), it made much more sense. Now I find it super easy to use and very helpful. Use the compass heading to figure out which way to start walking, and then as you're walking, use the track (and arrows) to make slight adjustments to your heading and it will lead you right to your rocket.
 
Not sure if you have the bluetooth module but if so rocket locator app seems to work pretty well. Here is what I saw during a test inside my basement. Blue dot was Rx, red pin TxScreenshot_20210722-210113_Gallery.jpg
 
May I then assume the easier option is to just plug in the coordinates into google maps on the phone & follow the phone directions?
That's what I do. Or just use a simple GPS app like 'GPS Waypoint Finder', which works even without maps or data. It just uses the phone's GPS and compass to tell you how far away you are, and in what direction.
 
OK, top row:
Compass point of your rocket Seconds since last fix Compass direction that you're moving

bottom row:
Distance to your rocket Arrow and degrees Left/Right that you need to move to get to your rocket

And as has been mentioned, there's no compass, so the directions are in relation to the direction that you're moving. If you start walking/driving and follow the arrow in the bottom right, it will take you right to your rocket.

In your case, you probably walked away from your transmitter until it changed... it's telling you that the transmitter is behind you. "Your" position is only updated every 10 seconds, and you have to have moved at least 25' in those 10 seconds or it won't update your position. That's to keep you from walking in circles.
 
You have to walk (move the GPS unit in the receiver) for about 10 seconds for the receiver to collect enough point to establish an accurate track heading and L/R turn directions. When the unit is stationary it is collecting points with random position errors and the track and turn information is junk. It isn't bad design, it is just the nature of GPS (just like your car GPS can't tell you which way to turn until you move the car). Pick a direction and walk until the track and turn data updates, then adjust direction according to the turn indication and walk in that direction until it updates again. With a little patience you will be walking right towards your rocket. You also have to keep this in mind when you get close to your rocket. If you don't walk right up on it, commit to a direction and walk until the track and turn update, giving you a new accurate direction.

The idea is that it's going to tell you which way to go while you're moving... if you're not moving, it can't tell you which way to go. BTW, the next version of the LCD firmware will get rid of the arrows on the compass and track readings... they ARE kinda confusing if you don't know what they mean.

I just want it to read:

Any tracking receiver should report the lat/lon coordinates at a minimum, so you have an actual location to refer to and can navigate with other tools if needed. Hopefully, your EggFinder has another screen that simply shows coordinates.

The arrows are nifty and fun to follow, but on both my Eggfinder and Featherweight GPS I just plug in the coordinates. That way I can find which road is closest. Just remember if you are going to a field without reception, to download an offline map (google maps app can do this).

What tracking / map app do you use? I hate typing in the ° “ ‘ is there an option that realizes these fields?
 
Where did you get the Bluetooth? The HC-06?
The bluetooth module was in the kit, I bought the $98 eggfinder tracking kit for use with a bluetooth device. The app I use now is Rocket Track, there is a link in another thread the past few days. Also Rocket Locator seems to work, and I think Bluetooth GPS app also works. The latter two are on the playstore. Not sure if they work for Apple devices.
Edit: added the version of Rocket Track I have, there may be other versions out there.

I just use Google maps.
GPS comes in 3 formats (that I know of). The one that uses the symbols is DMS, if you change it to DMM or DD then you just have a decimal point to enter. I believe you can change it is most systems. Check the device user manuals.
 
If you really like Bluetooth, you can add the HC-06 to the LCD receiver for $6... that way you get both the coordinates on the screen (and the arrows etc. if you have the GPS add-on), and you can use Rocket Track or whatever. I'm a big fan of having the receiver display the coordinates... that way you're not dependent on your "other device" for them. If you lose your Bluetooth connection because you left your receiver on the LCO table when you went to get your rocket, you won't lose the coordinates when you realize your mistake and come back to get it, only to find out that the Bluetooth connection is gone. Seen it happen...
