Is there a story behind that? Even if they didn't work, its a cool look for a rock show.

Sandy.
I haven't been able to find any information on it. it would be extremely difficult to get a cone that big to be operational, so it's obviously just for decoration.

I remember hearing about the Grateful Dead 'wall of sound' but that was regretfully before my time and did seem very plausible as it was an array of real units. I wish I had become a fan when Jerry was still alive, but regretfully my introduction to the band was near/after his death.

I was a blues/metal guy in college (Stevie Ray Vaughn, Metallica - weird combo, I think), but after college I got an apartment and was running out of money due to bad decision making. My apartment was a 2 bedroom, even though I was single, so I figured I'd post an add for a roommate to help offset the cost. I posted in Creative Loafing (wouldn't recommend that today if it even still exists, but when I posted the ad, it wasn't necessarily a bad idea. . . ). The guy who called first had just moved to town and was living on a friend's couch. He seemed to be a decent dude and we agree to give it a try for a month.

Long story short, he noted my musical tastes and asked why I was always pissed off when listening to music. I said I wasn't and he said he wanted to put some mellow tunes on for me and cherry picked some great Grateful Dead tunes that weren't normal radio play around here. I loved it and became a post-Dead Dead-head. Eventually, he moved on to Jacksonville, Fl, then to Europe. I've lost touch with him in the years since I moved, but for a few years after his move to Europe, he'd just show up at the door, when he was visiting his family who lived in Charleston once or twice a year. We'd hang out and listen to good tunes and then he'd head back to regular life. I wish everybody having a gmail account was a thing back then, as I'm sure if we kept in contact and he knew where I lived now, he'd do the same thing and just stop by when he was in country visiting his parents and I'd love to hang out again. A salt of the Earth kind of guy who made me stop listening only to pissed off music and opened my ears to a great number of other bands.

A couple dozen+ McIntosh MC2300's and tons of JBL drivers, IIRC. An impressive list of goods. I never saw them, either.

I miss that, it was a regular thing to scour for local music in ATL. I could only afford to see a show every now and then, but I was always on the watch for the next issue of CL.

I haven't been doing any audio projects in a while (no good reason, other than different projects have taken priority) and I want to do something that will have a 100% improvement in my system - a record cleaning machine.

Almost all of my vinyl is second hand (at least) and my wife has some records from her parents that she wants to play that look horrific.

I thought I'd reach out to the guys in this thread to see what their thoughts are on record cleaning and ultrasonic record cleaning specifically. I've read the 200+ page thread on DIYAudio about DIY Ultrasonic machines, but figured I'd throw it out here before buying parts.

While I would absolutely prefer a DIY solution using US made components, that seems to be a tough sell currently. If I'd have to go with a generic Chinese ultrasonic cleaner, I'll shelve the project and buy something else entirely (like an old VPI or something).

Just curious on other's thoughts.

Sandy: I bought an old vpi 16 for $75.00 years ago and just start this week to make the repairs on it so that I can use it on my last 450 records I'm down to. Once I get all of my records cleaned maybe I'll make you do a super deal on it.

I *believe* I bought the suction tube and edge seal stuff from VPI on the DIY version I planned to build years ago. If you want me to check and see if I'm remembering correctly, I'll check and see if any of the parts I bought would be helpful in your refurbish.

hey there. I picked up an old/nice Ampex 970 R2R tape recorder/player, and am selling it on ebay (for local pickup). Here's the link* $25 off price for any TRFer that want's it (hell, I might just cancel ebay sale).

I assume link is OK cuz it's not at all rocket-related

@hobie1dog In response to your new avatar, I thought I had a pair of 6" bookshelfs around here to post a picture of... No Mirages to be found, I must have sold them at some point... I guess the gray hair is catching up faster than expected!

I've now got 14 Mirage speakers, and didn't really plan on it. Sounds great overall to these damaged, worn out ears.

so how in the world did you come across two pairs of them?

My brother ran across someone with 3 pair and he picked them up. I passed on a pristine pair of W90's a few years back, and never made amends with myself for skipping them. One of our buddies will get one pair, and he's offered the others to me. I prodded him to give them a listen before getting rid of all of them, and he's piddling with them now.

I'll see if I can find the pics of when he brought them home...

I have a pair of Mirage Acoustics (Canadian) speakers I bought in 1980. They still sound great.

There were a few Canadian brands that ruffled the speaker market a bit in the 80's & 90's! Good stuff. I do have a pair of Paradigm Mini-Monitors, a little 2-way.

I enjoyed some Paradigm speakers from the late 90's. I think they were a pair of 2-way bookshelves similar to those and a 3-way center channel. The bookshelves went away fairly fast to a new owner and were replaced by a junk pair of low-sumer Infinity speakers. The center stayed around quite a while.

Its ironic how I unintentionally downgraded my system during the time period due to perceived improvement/sales job vs real improvements. Marketing and the next new thing was a killer for my wallet in the late 90's-early 2000's. . .oops.
